My father passed away 2 days ago. He wanted me to sell his beloved pool cue made by Kenneth Stew Mortson. I tried calling Stew's phone number in my father's file (Stew is in our geographic area in the NW suburbs of Chicago), but the number does not work. My father thought perhaps Stew might want to buy the cue back or know of a buyer. The cue cost $700 in Feb of '99 and the extra shaft was $100 plus $212 for the case for a total of $1012. Someone at my father's sr ctr who played with my father has offered $250 and I feel that is too low. The potential buyer knew I would want more. Details from a note in my father's file in someone else's handwriting (? Stew's): gunstock walnut joint and buttpiece frnt. Brazilian rosc and ebony splars into mora. White ceramic inner pyramid and coral. Butt bloodwood silver rings ebony coral pyramids. And the note has Stew's signature. Also says Mr Pendis ??? Anyone who can help tell me how to reach Stew or translate what this all means or suggest how much I should sell it for or who wants to buy, please contact me. I am his daughter. He loved his cue.

do yourself a favor and don't sell it till you post some pictures and specs on here so some of the more experienced cue whores (connoisseurs) can chime in with value estimates.

post pics and specs so we can do our best to tell you what it;s actually worth. the cue market's slow right now but 250 from someone who played with your dad means he knows something we don't or he's an "a" hole trying to get the cue for way less than it's worth. not that i wouldn't do the same but i don't know you or your dad so it's less disrespectful

I will post photos

Thank you for the great idea to post photos. I will do that.

dad gum

seems a little harsh for a guy who merely sats he is interested

unless of course there is a modus operandi involved

5 photos of Stu Mortsen cue

photos of the Stu Mortsen inlay on the cue mentioned earlier that was my father's and is for sale

Looks like there is a tennis grip installed over the wrap. Carefully cut that thing off of there.

IIRC, Stew is listed in the Blue Book of Cues (probably not under Kenneth though.) I know him, but don't have his contact info. He is still located in the NW Chicago suburbs somewhere. I'll PM you the number of someone who probably has his number.

Frankly, if it were me, I would either never sell it and keep it in the family, or sell it to the other guy if he was a very good friend of your father's. He may not be able to pay you what you want to get for the cue, but good friendships are worth more than a few hundred bucks, and maybe your father would want him to have it. Ok, I'll mind my own business now . . . :o

Some helpful information....

Mr. Pendis was in reference to himself. In other words, substitue "stu" for "Mr."
I spoke with a friend, who made a call to stu. Stu was playing golf, but returned his call quickly and said he remembered the cue.
I would say that stu wouldn't be interested in purchasing the cue back, but I don't speak for him, just a guess...
The case that is pictured isn't the original case that was sold with the cue.
Stu typically sold cases that had the name american vinyl, with his cues.
The cues that stu made were built the old school way with a pantograph machine that probably dated back to WWII. His designs are very different and certainly original. The shafts will most likely have a schuler pool cue taper to them and the joint is certainly schuler as well.
Stu was a VERY good friend of the late Ray Schuler's. Stu had access to just about anything and everything he wanted at the schuler shop and was able to turn out a few cues from there that weren't Schuler's per say, but were his own using all of the same fundamental construction techniques that ray used while incorporating his own aesthetics. From what I understand, if you were to ask stu of the value, he'd say $5,000 if he thought he could get it. Not because he's a scammer or anything. He's simply very proud of his work... Stu said he remembered the cue after the description was read to him and he said, "Today, the cue is worth every bit of what was originally paid for it." Not that his opinion is in touch with today's cue market, but his opinion is now available to all potential buyers. Do with it what you will. The cues he "made" were shuler cues, with mortson inlays and designs. Each of them typically had a name much like an artist names a painting. Some examples were the Michael Jordon cue, the tiger woods cue, and there were some other real strange names. I was mistaken laura when I told you the cue was made for michael jordan, it was that something about the cue made Stu think hmmmmmmmmmmm........ michael Jordan!
Hope some of this info helps.

Thanks for info, everyone!

Thanks much for the research and info that everyone has posted. When Stu's phone didn't work, I went to the address I had for him, but it was an apt complex and I couldn't locate him, and he probably didn't live there any more. I'm pleased to know that I have confirmation of what I thought from my paperwork -- that this is a Ray Schuler cue with inlay by Stu. I figured that wasn't the original case since I thought I remembered another one and that didn't look like the cost of the original. The cue is beautiful despite my horrid photos (I'm a terrible photographer and I got reflection off lights above). And thanks for solving the Mr. Pendis mystery! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet Stu and talk to him. That would have been worth more than the cue itself! Well, I've had an offer of $150 and an offer of $250, and I'd really like to get $300-$350 since you just can't get a Schuler/Stu cue any more. I certainly can hold it and wait, but I'd rather that someone use it and enjoy it. Please feel free to submit offers to me and I'll keep checking this site for offers or just for info. It has been a real pleasure to meet everyone who has posted/replied to my postings. What a nice group of folks! I'm sorry to have lost my father, but meeting you all has been a nice plus out of the sadness. Best luck to all of you.

Sorry ... I'm one of the uninitiated ... what the PM that I am supposed to check?

Top right hand corner of your screen should have a box that has "your notifications" And you click on that and come down it will say "1 private message".

Hope this helps.

Ah, private messages -- I got it!

Thanks to all for the private messages and great info. Photos are posted for those interested. If you're in my area in the Chicago are and wish to see the cue, let me know.

Interested In Your Fathers Cue

Hi my name is Geoffrey Gray I would be interested in your fathers cue. What sort of money do you want for it?. Call me any time I am in Arizona 602 391 3555.
Kind Regards Geoff

Stu Mortsen Cue

Geoff -- I'd like $350 for the cue, and both shafts, and the case. Gee, my uncle has a second home in AZ in Anthem. Are you near that location? Or do you get to Chicago where I am? My uncle goes back and forth between Anthem and Chicago, and perhaps could transport the package. Of course, I always can ship the cue, but the shipping and insurance would need to be added on top of the $350. Gee, you're the only other Geoffrey I know who spells his name that way, except for my cousin and the Toys R Us giraffe!
