Kentucky Road Player Info NEEDED!!!! ASAP

Hey, David, if I send you an advanced copy of my
newist book Zen and the Art of Pocket Billiards, could
you check it for inaccuracies? Or would you just slap me
and chastise me for verbalizing my doubts.
And if you do slap me, will I instantly realize where I am in
error?
BtW, what IS the sound of one ball clanging?

I have a guy in my hall right now playing my best player and I need some info on him.

The 2 guys are from Madisonville, Ky and the backer goes by the name "PREACHER"....his shooter is balding...5'10" 200lbs.....and looks like he may be laying down on some games in this 6 ahead match.

Just curious if anyone out there may know who these 2 guys are... I am backing our best shooter and they are staying about even...but I think this other guy may be laying low...

Any info is appreciated

Yeah cause every Road Warrior wants to play world beaters, as opposed to just making some money on the QT...

No, but I'll sue you for plagiarism, copyright infringement, and identity theft.

That is not the way of Tai Kwon Leap. A boot to the head suffices to guide the student back onto the Four-Bank Path to Enlightenment and Correct Thinking.

Depends upon how thick your head is.

LOL! Your question implies that you have never sunk a ball in a pocket!

Seriously, have you written a book with that
title? I've been wanting to write that book
for years.

Have you written a book or just "thought about it"?

I just walked in off the street. How do I know you're tougher than a little old lady? Imperfect information is what makes a bet a gamble.

Anyhow, the more you know about an opponent, the more likely you are to talk yourself into losing either money you bet or money you didn't bet.

How do I know you "just walked in off the street"? How do I know you didn't get a line on me from someone else? It's common knowledge that road players trade spots. Me and my buddies have gone to spots given to us by other players and we have given them spots as well. We have also showed up in places where the room had gotten a line on us before we got there. It's the life and it is what it is. You are out of line to deny someone the right to inform themselves before they bet.

I don't agree with your psychology of betting either. If I am betting small, a couple hundred a set, then I might not worry about who I am playing. On the other hand I don't want to lose money where I have NO CHANCE either. The idea of giving money away while frustrating myself at the same time is nuts. Unless I was Buddy Hall's speed I would hesitate to gamble for anything signifigant to me unless I had some sort of idea of who I was playing.

Of course, that's not the "line" on me :-)

It's not knocking action to ask for information. Jeez, what kind of people think that other people DESERVE to be allowed to run around the country giving up false stories to entice other people to gamble?

John

One pocketchump, I think this kind of guy does to answer your question? LOL...

Nope..never knocking anyone's action...just curious as to who he is.

Another pool hall sent him here to play our best guy....talked to the other pool hall and the owner there thought he was laying down on some shots and when the player wanted to up the bet, the owner of the other pool hall wouldn't and they quit playing

I am just curious as to who he is....the guy preacher looks familiar but other than that I have no idea who they are.

I love road players, I think they are beneficial to the game of pool...just trying to get some info.

It's not like our top 3 players don't go by aliases......I am just figuring these 2 left Savannah on Sunday after the 9 Ball event down there and are working their way back to Kentucky.

Just curious if anyone here in the southeast has came across a backer named Preacher and if so, how were they. They are as nice as they can be and like I said, I love road players to stop in, we treat them like kings.

(Just found that kind of ironic)

JB,
Well said.

If you are the young Buddy Hall then it really doesn't matter; I have heard a top road player say they will play anyone they meet on the road; "if I don't know you, then you can't beat me."

Not many young Buddy Halls!!!!!!!

Of course there are a lot of WANNA-BE's out there. As far as INFO goes, if I'm betting my money, I'm entitled to ask people in the room, on my cell, the net, or ask for ID if I want to.
I played a guy who came looking for me once, who said he was from another state. One of my buddies had seen his car in the parking lot with out of state plates and verified he was telling us the truth about what state. He got played 3 sets @ $200 and finished 1 set ahead.
I've had guys come to town and try to trap me or one of my friends. Some of them had gotten a bad line, and ended up losing.
I don't play many people I don't know any more, but it's your right to ask about anyone you want to play for $$$$$$$.

I think this thread is funny, not because someone wants to identify a shooter, but exactly what's the point of that?

I mean, lets say fifty people vouch for who the shooter is, including himself and his backer; then what? I mean, how good is good, how bad is bad? Is he dogging shots, or does he just miss a lot? It really makes no sense, other than for entertainment purposes.

Long story that probably has no bearing on this thread. Anyways, I've been asked to play before and have agreed only on the condition that he gives me his name. Most of the time I ask for a drivers license. Most times they comply. One time was pretty funny. The guy won't show me his ID without me giving him money to see it. We haggle back and forth and I finally give him $30. This guy was so much fun to deal with, I figured I was gonna play him anyways so I might as well know his name. I pay him and he shows me his Tennesse drivers license. The name matches his stated name and the name on his jacket. The plates on his truck were from TN so I figured what the hell. His name actually did sound kinda fake, but he had a real ID so I played him. Lo and behold, after about an hour, our very own Hemicuda walks in the door and sits down to watch. After a few minutes, when the guy goes to the john, he pulls me aside and asks me if I know who I'm playing. I give him the guys name and he justs laughs. After we're done playing, he walks up to the guy and gives him a big hug. They hadn't seen each other in about 15 years and that definitely wasn't his real name. He stuck around for a few days and he was very entertaining to say the least. Easily one of my favorite pool players.

You left out the funny part of the story, dogginda9. If I hadn't let you know he was an old friend you would have probably kept on winning, LOL. Or,,,,,,,,,,,if you had kept playing the game you were playing instead of letting him pick the game.

People talk about who the top hustler was/is but the best hustler, the guy who makes the most money and leaves you feeling like if you just had one more barrel you would have taken it off, that's the guy. 99% of the people who lost money to this guy don't have a clue what his name is. The same 99% shook his hand as he walked out with their cash. Likable, lucky and anonymous. There really are none any more likable than our little buddy. Now, when Jay Helfert reads this I know he is going to just die of Curiosity. PM me Jay and I will let you know.

That's what I say. The rep that attaches to a road player's name is so distorted by sour grapes and boasts that it's utterly unreliable. All you can ever know for sure is whether you can beat him tonight or not... and there's only one way to find out.

I was coming out of a semi-retirement of gambling on pool back in the early 90's. A guy came into town asking to play some $20 pool. We had no idea who he was. My buddy had still been playing and tried to give the guy the 8. He refused to play. I played him some even for 6 hours and he wins about $200. I had to work the next day, so I told him to come back on Friday night and play some more. After 5 or so hours, he is $120 winner and I packed up to go home. The next week he comes back to play my buddy and loses $1000 and then another $1500. About a month later I'm describing the guy to a friend who owns a poolroom in another part of the state and he tells me that neither me or my buddy can win.
Getting a line on people may help, but ain't always perfect. You never know when someone's in a slump or playing in that high gear for that month or so. Everyones game will fluctuate some. Have a great day

My favorite road player story was at a tournament in Macon in the early 1990's, local shooter Billy Miles was signifying in the pool room and yelled out "I WILL GIVE THE 8 TO THE NEXT M**** F**** THAT WALKS IN THE DOOR".....right at that moment a tall bearded man walked in and said "Hello, my name is Buddy Hall"

Plain Fact is ...

If your best player can not run a 6 pack, he probably shouldn't be playing him. Are they on a big table or bar table?

It matters a lot. If two players are trying to match up then it definitely is important to get the game close to even. Most of the time though with road players and hustlers they don't want the game anywhere close to even. As one player told me once, "I could have held a .32 to their heads and took the money, that's how much chance they had to win." I'd venture to say that most of the time when a road player shows up he has some idea of who to play, what they will bet and how to make the game.

Strangers show up all the time at my friend's pool room and ask for him because they heard from someone one else that he is the action in town. You think they weren't clued in to my friend's speed before they showed up? Why shouldn't my friend have the same opportunity to inform himself before he makes a game?

If you all want to have it be anonymous gunfighting then have everyone playing with the same cue and wearing a mask to hide their identity. In all my years I have never once had anyone take me up on the bet that we both write down two names and let them play heads up for the cash. Never, not once, not ever, because they all want the NUTS.

True. And that's the variable. Was your buddy giving up the 8 when he won? We all know stories of people who beat people they aren't supposed to. I am not saying that one should be afraid to step up. Just have a little sense about it and not throw the bankroll at a stranger.

I'll jump on just about anyone for cheap action. If I feel like playing then anyone can get $10/20 action. I'll donate gas money to a roadie on the chance that I might play over my head. I won't donate hotel money or wire home money unless they lay it down so good I can't refuse.
