One of the central problems with those threads, from a purely argumentative standpoint, is one of correlation.
The implication being that since pool leagues exist at a casual level and pool's top end isn't growing as many would like that pool leagues are somehow a cause.
That problem of correlation/causation has plagued mankind throughout history. It doesn't rain, therefore you angered the gods.
Really? How do you know?
That's what rubbed some the wrong way and immediately took the potential arguments from debates to an attack on an institution.
These things must be examined properly to see if there is any merit. Maybe there is, and maybe there isn't. Implications are not examinations, however, and members and moderators must respect that difference in order to have a productive environment.
Many moderators do not, especially larger boards where one or more competing products are commonly pitted against one another. Instead of bothering to change the environment, they feel the instant labeling of 'troll' (a term with an ambiguous meaning) and instant banning is the best course of action. The problem, of course, is that they have done nothing to change the environment, nor the cause of their perceived problems. They are therefore left with only a few pedestrian 'safe' topics and a lackluster user base that is afraid to engage in anything potentially meaningful for fear of being banned.
This is another great post, i've been seeing more and more lately. The truth is, I don't know (for a fact). I can only give you one data point, good enough for me.... yet not for you im sure. Here it is.
What you are about to read, all took place in my "area" of California. It was the early 90's, and we all thought pool was kinda so-so. We had all heard about amazing stories of keith and others playing for thousands perhaps 5 or ten years previous, yet nothing was really happening at the time. BUT, the truth is, there was a great atmosphere. It was on a smaller scale, but people came into the local rooms and practiced hard everyday and there was a lot to watch. Race to 3 for 20, 5 dollars a game one pocket-- then everybody would wait for the very good weekly tournament, and inbetween all this, we'd practice. i am personally convinced that this is how pool "rallies" in an area. That is, there are one or two good players, they gamble and play tournaments, everybody wants to be like them.... so they all work hard and try their hardest to improve. I loved.... relative to today, i absolutely loved it.
Then.... and I wont try to put a date in this.... but then.... something happened. There is not ONE sinlge player to be seen in any local hall around here hitting balls and working on their games. How can I correlate this to leagues. Like i said, truth is I can't definitively.... but I do have a brain, and I can tell you what ive seen and think. That atmosphere that I saw around here has just totally disappeard. People still like pool, so thats not the problem, but they aren't following the same behaviors as they did in the past. For me it is a problem, yet live and let live.... really, im just telling you how i feel.
And to address one other poster..... when i say leagues need to be trashed, I just mean they need to be exposed for what they really are so people can make up their own mind on how to get the "itch" that they have to play this game out of their system. Leagues seem almost automatic theses days for an up and comer.... I wish this wasn't the case, and I think if you have understood this post, you already know why. But I honestly want people to have a great time and get out there and have fun is the truth. But if your goal is to play well, i'm here to tell you to please think twice about joining a league, and the reason is that leagues are simply not the way to get better in this game. There are 3 things you need to do if you want to get better:
1) practice-- the more the better
2) good tournaments and perhaps some gambling to fill in the time between good tournaments
3) watch good players, accustats is perfect for this... pause and rewind are priceless
so i guess you could say the above 3 things would be my manifesto to wanna-be players. and if i could put a negative in my list, it would be stay away from leagues as you know.
