Lafayette, LA Tournament ($31k)

I played in the tournament at White Diamond Billiards this past weekend.

There was slightly over $31,000 in prize money, 117 players. I really enjoyed myself.

There was one big name person that everyone in the pool world has heard of - Scotty Townsend. There may have been some regional heros there, but not many legends. There were probably only about 10 players that I didn't have much of a chance of beating. In fact, Steve Linz from Texas (who won the tournament from the winners side) was my opponent in the third round and I lost to him 7-5 (he made two incredibly tough carom shots on the nine to win two games, either could have been attributed to luck).

My point is, there was lots of money to be had but not much of a showing from world champions. There was a Seminole Florida Pro Tour event this weekend that hosted many well known players (Strickland, Duel, Chohan, Hennessee). The payout as posted by AZ was $14,550. Does the cost of gas keep top players in their home state or area?

I was also there.............i went 0-2!!!

There was a big tourney in Dallas and the Seminole tourney.....

Seems that everytime we get a big local tourney there is ALWAYS one or 2 that pop up in texas the same weekend..... Not that it hurt anything this go around since we had so much cash it was stupid!\

Was nice to see Scotty T. for the first time in person... That guy has PLENTY of gamble left in him!!!!

Hopefully I will do better in the next tourney come around in a few months

Louisiana has always been known for enormous Calcuttas. It must be something in the water. :D

Congrats on the nice competition against the tournament's winner.

Was there much side action on the big tables?

I left at about 5:00 on Sunday and there were quite a few players still in the tournament. There was some one hole action between Mike Black and David Parker during the tournament. I think David won.

Scotty Townsend played a ring game ($10 I think) with some "kids" from Mississippi. They looked like they were still in high school but shot lights out. They were able to hang in there with the road warrior and showed no fear. I have much respect for those guys.

I think Ricky P and Chris Miller played after the tournament with Chris winning $4800.00.

There was action from the Friday til yesterday and prolly still some going on as we speak!!

Lots of big table stuff from ring games to one hole.........

Yeah.I got me a little mess of one those "kids" from mississippi.I forget the guys name but he had the t-shirt on with the suspenders stitched into it and an A's cap.Think he said his dad owned a place in Jackson full of big tables?Shot my nuts off on the big box for $200 then we got on the barbox and I lose another $200,almost got him 9-7.Lack of sleep all weekend had a lot to do with it I guess, but the guy still played lights out. It's pretty amazing you got these youngsters comin up 18-25 that have been playin for 6-8 years that play just as well or better than some of us that have been hitting balls for 20-25 years.I think next time i'm just gonna go sit around and drink beer while Chris does the calcutta. That was pretty entertaining.Great job Chris!!

Thetwo you mention in Texas are small events limited to 32 players and hardly have an effect in what Chris is doing.

Chris is doing a great job with this event and it is well run. They really kept it moving.

Sometimes tournaments are disseminated via word of mouth.

Just out of curiosity, how was this tournament advertised? Did somebody post it on AzBilliards MAIN PAGE tournament section? Was it posted in the TOURNAMENT forum?

Of course, in this day and age with gas so high, players are going to pick and choose their tournaments wisely. I would assume they would attend a tournament closer to their home base.

That said, if this tournament's monies added and calcutta monies are notoriously famous and well known, it is difficult to understand why the action players didn't flock to Beautiful Dixie to partake in this great event.

They do everything better in Beautiful Dixie, especially pool, always have and always will! :p

Chris Miller and company have a great place with very nice equipment, service, and great food. I had a blast there.

About 2/3 of the payoout came from the calcutta and that is the problem from the big names. It just isn't cost effective to go that distance.

SAtill, there were 117 players. That is a turn out that most events these days pray for. The number of players is hardly a problem and I'm sure Chris is quite satisfied.
