Thanks for help
Jock

specs would help.

the atlas would be a nice assembly and possibly tapering lathe depending on disrance between centers and thru hole.

the small lathe you could use for billets, points and butterflies, tips and ferrules

Hi,

I would check the spindle bore on the atlas to see if it at least 1 3/8. If not you cant do pins of joint work.

Rick

Yes you can do joint work and pins with great accuracy with the smaller bore Atlas. I started with a 1954 Atlas made by Oldsmobile 6 years ago and it is a 10 by 54 inch with less than 1 inch spindle bore, by using the steady rest with a bearing and precision collets it is fantastic for installing joint pins, collars and facing butts and shafts. You can do anything you need to do on a cue with these old war time lathes, the one I have came from a US Navy battleship with several thousand dollars worth of carbide tooling and a complete lathe rebuild kit still in the Atlas box included for $250. The lathe shown looks a lot better than mine and Ebay sellers have any part you need down the road so snatch it up if you can buy it cheap, you won't be sorry.--Leonard

That looks cool Rick I would never have thought that wood could be used for the taper bars, I was thinking of adding taper bars made from 1/2 inch key stock to mine but it looks like good ole cheap Oak will work.--Leonard

Hi,

Ray milled the taper on the oak on the CNC as a prototype for our taper bar, When we got our shaft and butt saw machines we never upgraded to the aluminum bar. We made about 50 cues on that wood bar and there is no noticeable wear.

Mounting a metal bar would be the thing to do and a very easy project.

Rick

Before these machines, that Atlas carried the load for tapering butts and shafts in our shop.

Nice jack of the OP's thread... way to go.

Hi Leonard,

Your right you can use the steady rest. I was just trying to give him a heads up if he thought you could pass the butt through the spindle bore with a back chuck. You can't.

With that said the Atlas lathe is a great machine and I used mine for working between centers. I mounted a dual taper bar with a router set up and e stop and removed the gears to install a DC drive motor with controller to have vernier control of the travel on my lead screw.

Since I got my butt tapering saw machine I only use the Atlas for puttung on linen wrap. What a waste. This lathe is for sale if anyone is interested in a custom Atlas set up for cue making.

Very creative taper bar. I have heard of wooden taper bars before, but never saw anyone do it.

Bob,

I don't have this lathe posted for sale and don't plan to at the moment. I wanted him to see his options what can be done with these Atlas lathes and give him the option for this one if he pleases.

Believe me, the hours it took to modify this lathe was pretty substantial and if I where buying one of these and had the option, I would opt for one already set up for cue making.

I don't care if I sell it because money is not the reason i do anything.

I plan on keeping that lathe to do wraps with the dc controller.

Jacking the thread, I think not. Enhancing the details of the thread, giving an informative point of view or options is what I am all about. If you see that differently I believe you are the thread jacker with the personal stab which makes no sense to me. Your post changed the topic from sharing info about atlas lathes to non productive pathos.

Rick

Your post #5 in this thread states:

I for one appreciated Rick's post. I'm sure the op did too. He could see the potential the atlas has, and even have the opportunity to purchase a pretty awesome set up. I'd bet that's the best atlas cue lathe around.
Rick, next time jealous haters, hate, tell em to "jack this"

Any info is good info. The lathe is actually set up to do cues. The gentleman that owned it was a cuemaker and cue repairman. I recently bought a taig style cue lathe. It is fine for cues But is limited and the taig will not do threading. The Atlas is setup for threading and no gear changing. If you look you can see it has a router setup. I know that lathe was used to make many many cues and shafts over the years. Actually I'm buying the complete cue shop. It's an old school setup (no CNC) but it will work for me. Plus I'll have a good jump on the river of wood and tooling that is needed.
Also, With what Rick added I'll know who to ask. Hope you sell your lathe.
Guys thanks for the input. and keep it coming.

Thank's
Jock.......New to the game Of building & fixing cues.

That's a good one Rick! I just wish that spray really worked. Why people like Arnot and Bob feel they need to poke their nose in and derail an otherwise productive conversation is beyond me. Some people just need attention, and will do anything to get it...

Hey Jocnat

I hate to stray away from a good pissing contest, but have you seen the awesome lathe that JLCues has for sale? Look at the thread titled:
New! Relocating... A little more money buy WAY more lathe, and set up for cuemaking. Easy to do butts, shafts, whatever, I wish I had the room and bucks, I would not be telling you this then !

About the pissing contest: Have you guys a beer sponsor yet? Gotta have brew to produce the bullets.

Scdive, this is the second time today that I have had to remove an attack against a user by you. Not sure what your issues are with these users, but hijacking their threads is not the way to deal with it.
