Hi,
I would check the spindle bore on the atlas to see if it at least 1 3/8. If not you cant do pins of joint work.

Nice jack of the OP's thread... way to go.Hi,
Ray milled the taper on the oak on the CNC as a prototype for our taper bar, When we got our shaft and butt saw machines we never upgraded to the aluminum bar. We made about 50 cues on that wood bar and there is no noticeable wear.
Mounting a metal bar would be the thing to do and a very easy project.

Before these machines, that Atlas carried the load for tapering butts and shafts in our shop.

Hi Leonard,
Your right you can use the steady rest. I was just trying to give him a heads up if he thought you could pass the butt through the spindle bore with a back chuck. You can't.
With that said the Atlas lathe is a great machine and I used mine for working between centers. I mounted a dual taper bar with a router set up and e stop and removed the gears to install a DC drive motor with controller to have vernier control of the travel on my lead screw.
Since I got my butt tapering saw machine I only use the Atlas for puttung on linen wrap. What a waste. This lathe is for sale if anyone is interested in a custom Atlas set up for cue making.

Bob,
I don't have this lathe posted for sale and don't plan to at the moment. I wanted him to see his options what can be done with these Atlas lathes and give him the option for this one if he pleases.
Believe me, the hours it took to modify this lathe was pretty substantial and if I where buying one of these and had the option, I would opt for one already set up for cue making.
I don't care if I sell it because money is not the reason i do anything.
I plan on keeping that lathe to do wraps with the dc controller.
Jacking the thread, I think not. Enhancing the details of the thread, giving an informative point of view or options is what I am all about. If you see that differently I believe you are the thread jacker with the personal stab which makes no sense to me. Your post changed the topic from sharing info about atlas lathes to non productive pathos.
