Le He Wen almost kills Darren Appleton

What do you all think? After Darren being up 11-3, and almost losing the match, I think if he doesn't get it at the end, he would have killed himself.

What a comeback by the Chinese player... he too deserves the title in my opinion.

Unfortunately I could not watch but there has to be a reason he was down 11-3 right? Either way the race was to 13 and Darren got there first so no Wen has no rights to the title. I would really like to see the finals of tournaments like this to be a win by 2 format...

IMO when the score was 8-2, appleton was really on his game, it was as if the cb was on a string for him. then i think he seemed tired and all of a sudden he lost his concentration and started to slip....i don't think it was a matter of wen getting better at all. thank goodness appleton won and i especially liked the table dance at the end. as far as the outcome of the cue stick, well, that it is yet to be known. the jump shot on the 2 ball in the side i think was the "nail".

Sounds like one of those matchups where you wished both players could win.

Didn't Appleton kill 3 spectators when he threw his cue like some crazy extra from a planet of the apes movie after he won?

That's how you know a player is sponsored by predator. They throw their cue like a harpoon after a victory. Haha!

I bet Oscar Dominguez wouldn't throw his cue like that. Haha.

Good on Darren it was an exciting match with an unbelievable come back from Wen.

If you watched closely Daz kept giving games and let em back in the game many times after the 11th game. When the score was 8-2 Daz and he shot and rattled a relatively easy 9 in the corner to go up 9-2, physically and mentally the table and his prior matches showed this attrition. I'm not taking anything away from his opponent, but right after that 9 ratttle' Daz followed the 7? ball into the pocket and scratched right behind it with follow. A couple games later, he had had, ball in hand TWICE, and didn't get proper shape on his next ball, those 4 so to speak miscues/mental wear down lapses.... let his opponent get back into the game. If I was Daz, I would increase my roadwork and training to NEVER let that happen again till mother time tells me so. In high quality matches, opponents that are way down often swing back the other way because they expelled minimum energy, have allot in the tank and when that type of situation evolves the shooter is relaxed and the leader usually has to fight for Every shot. The final out by Daz was true to his demeanor and character, he doesn't give up, he just wears out, like we all do with 4'' ? pockets, they take the starch right outta ya.

I was chatting with a friend as we watched that match and I said "If Daz loses from here he's not coming home from Doha." That was when he was up by like seven or eight games. LOL.

Props to both players for a great match. Also big kudos to the promoters for an outstanding stream. This is the right track IMO. If people in this country can actually watch these events there might be a chance to rally some support to send America's best to play.

The only thing that I didnt enjoy about watching my buddy Daz win was knowing that the Brit fans are going to be absolutely insufferable now. :D

What is the Payout?

From one of the press releases:

Champion - $40,000
Runner-up - $20,000
3- 4 - $12,000
5-8 -$8,000
9-16 -$5,000
17-32 - $3,500
33-64- $2,000
65-96 - $1000 (loser of 2nd round in the loser's bracket of Stage 2)
Total - $300,000

Edit: and by my arithmetic, that adds up to $308,000.

... the break out on the 6ball was epic

[This refers to the last rack.]

I wonder whether that was intentional. The 8-ball was blocking the 6-ball for the closest corner pocket, but the 6-ball would go in four other pockets. Trying to bump the 6-ball after making the 3-ball in that situation raises the possibility of a bad outcome (such as a snooker). Yet if he didn't want to bump the 6-ball, it seems like he could have gotten good position on the 5-ball by just going one rail from the 3-ball instead of two rails. So I don't know.

But if I had to guess, I'd say he just tried to go two rails around the 8- and 6-balls, accidentally bumped the 6-ball, and came out OK.

Thoughts?

You are spot on, this was not realized by many, but I totally agree with your post. I found it even better than the jumper in the side, the 6 break out, it was the dagger, along with the great half dagger shot from the 8 to the nine.

So I guess you don't like Hill/Hill
It's only the most exciting thing in pool

Well .. someone should clarify with Darren but I don't think it was accident. If he didn't bump 6 or 8 (to give himself easier shot on 6 from 5), position on the 6 from 5 would have been difficult, especially under the pressure. He did take a bit of time before hitting that shot, planning out the pattern. He may have been trying to bump the 6 so it would've had clear lane to the corner pocket blocked by 8. These guys have amazing talent to execute the patterns more precisely than "amateurs".

Dominquez can't match Daz on the table so it's pointless.
