measureman

last night at 8 ball I had 1 solid left and made a bad safe( I know-measureman playing a bad safe unheard of) and left my opponent a shot. She ran her two stripes and missed an easy 8 ball for the win.
I then had an easy shot on my solid with easy position on the 8.
I won the game.
I said to her you should have won.
And I meant this,i was not trying to rub it in.
Was this out of line?
It's not the first time i've said that.

why should she have won ? U missed, then she missed, and then you made the shot. Sounds like you both should have won ;)

I hate those games I "should've won"
I don't mind those games I "should've lost";)

I dont see the point in saying that. You win or lose when the last ball is down.

Good game.

Not bad form in my opinion if you mean it sincerely though.

I say the same thing when it applies. I see nothing wrong with what you said, so long as you're being genuine and not patronizing, no one should have an issue with it.

Which of course means some people will :p

Here is another way to look at it. Your opponent made a clear mistake--a bad shot. And while you are acknowledging you would normally expect her to make the shot--and have no bad intentions--your comment in effect brings up again and highlights the mistake.

So suppose she's kicking herself thinking she didn't stay down and respect the easy shot.

Then you get up to shake her hand and communicate, in effect:

"hey, by the way. I want to remind you just made a mistake, and that had consequences."

Thee are a few things I really don't want to hear when the game is over, that's probably one of them. It's benign enough, and certainly not rude or anything like that,
but if I should have won clearly I would have, if I should have won then lets' just mark down that way.
Another is "I gave that one to you", so if you gave it away maybe we should have just saved the time and had a drink together, that would have been satisfactory to me.
Next time you're gonna give it away let me know and we won't bother with the match.
I think "good match", or "nice shooting" is sufficient

I've tried not to say it because I've realized that I don't like to hear it. If I lose a game like that I'm aggravated for a few minutes, not that I show it.

It depends on how well you know the person. If I know the person really well then it's not a problem. If I don't know them I'll just say "nice match" and leave it at that.

I've learned the only thing worth saying after a win is...nothing. Shake hands, because that's expected in league when a match has ended, give a small smile and head nod.

The only exception is if my opponent played really well, I mumble "good match". Only if they played really well.

If you would have said, "You could have won that game if you hadn't a made such a dumbshit shot on that eight-ball. Wanna go have a drink?" would you have felt better?
Or if she had said, "Up yours, meathead." would that have made you feel better?
One of life's little condrums, ain't it?

Its not out of line if you arent meaning it to be anything other than an honest opinion and good sportsmanship. How they take it is on them.

What you didn't inclued in your post is her reaction to your comment. If she was friendly, and accepting of her loss, then its all good. If she was put off by that comment, again its on her (if you meant it in a sportsmanship manner).

I agree with one of the above comments. Shake hands, thanks for the game.

It goes both way and i dont have a problem hearing it personally but some may take it too hard.

I say it when i truly knew i was lucky to get away when i didnt deserve it.
But i also use it as a way to console my opponent even when i win convincingly just to hopefully make him feel better.

Last Saturday in the Predator at Cue Bar after I got shut out 6-0 in a race to six my opponent said "good match". I knew he didn't mean it but it didn't bother me as this is what you say.

I've been told many times that it was a "good match" when he and I know that I played for shit. When I've won a close match or the opponent shanked the money ball I say "I was lucky". I don't think that sounds patronizing in any way. Still means they made mistakes or I had a better night without placing any blame. Another thing that sounds ok to anyone is "thanks for the match" while shaking hands. Mitch

I'm just happy to see that you both shook hands. I've known a few players who after missing an easy 8-ball would storm off and sulk somewhere.

I'm not a fan of "you shoulda won". I figure, if I know they shoulda won then they damn sure know they shoulda won. No need to point it out again as they're likely furious at themselves.

I say "I got lucky" if I got a roll or if I really whooped someone. Usually, I just say "nice playing you".

To each their own and in the moment it might have pissed her off but give people a break in the heat of the moment. I'd imagine most people feel pretty silly after getting so emotional about pool after they've calmed down.
