leather wrap question

I don't see why not. Lots of guys just use a ruler to do them. The advantage to this is you can cut the butt and forearm ends of the wrap much easier than if you didn't have the template.

I've never used anything other than the Unique jig. There are two makers I speak to regularly. One always used a straight edge, but bought the Unique Jig at VF this year. The other has tried the jigs, but still swears by the straight edge method. Both do great wraps.

Very astute observation. I agree, it just looks like a 25 - 35.00 template to me also, If you don't count the 4 leather wraps at 10 - 20.00 each, the DVD instructions that I've seen sold from 20 - 30.00, the metal straight edge and the leather knife.

Basic leather wraps are like $6. ea.
Some wrap grooves are longer than 12" so the ruler will be of no use on them. You can make a template yourself. Any good utility knife will cut leather.
It's a good thing we're not talking about 'wrap fixtures'.
The first time I saw one used I asked myself, "is that all they do for $500, help you cut a straight line?" It's your money, do with it as you wish.
Believe it or not, you've probably got everything you need to do leather wraps in your shop already except maybe talent and that comes from experience, not a DVD. I'd suggest that you watch someone do a leather wrap and learn for yourself just what goes on. Your technique and attention to detail will determine the outcome.

In other words, you prefer trial and error and learning from mistakes and screw up's rather then education? To get back to my question, you are saying save my money this template is no good? I would be better off screwing up a bunch of leather and wasting my time and money trying to learn on my own is the best route? I just want to be sure I understand since this is an advice forum by experts, that is your expert advice?

I want to add this. I signed back on just now thinking I would just delete my comment as a knee jerk reaction. After rereading your response and what I wrote I am leaving it as my Sincere reaction to what you said. Many of us come on here and read to learn. I sometimes have things to add because I have owned pool rooms and have been fooling around with cues for over 40 years. But I am also the first to admit when I don't know something, that is how you learn. I have done leather wraps in the past but like most anyone I am always looking for a better way of doing things which prompted my question.

you should leave it up there.it's edited anyway like most of your other posts,but it is a good example of your attitude around here.unless i read it wrong it looks like you asked for opinions and the started spouting off sarcastic replies to what i thought were good honest answers by KJ.he is right wraps cost about $5 and the other stuff can be made and a DVD isn't going to help you cut a leather wrap.

if i read your response wrong,sorry but it sure seems like the typical,know it all,rude replies that i am used to seeing from macguy.

This response as was your first is just personal and of no constructive use. It is just in regards to the past thread on ferrules. Get over it.

I think KJ's opinion is a valid one. If one does a search on doing leather wraps, or watch 3 different people do one you will notice that each have atleast a slightly different way of doing them. I have done a few so far, using Chris's book as my guide and they have gotten progressivly better. The package on Ebay is good, but IMO, only for the video, so You can see one person's way of doing it. The tools are very simple to aquire cheaply elsewhere. You could just buy the video seperately from him.
Even buying the kit, you will be still doing trial and error and will waste at least a few leather wraps as you try to follow the video and develop your way of doing it, so your sarcastic, rude response to KJ's post is just, IMO, a childish response due to the fact he doesn't support your idea that this kit will make you a better installer, just by buying the kit.
If you where looking for someone to say "yes, this will make you a perfect wrap installer just by buying this" then you should have PM'ed the seller, and not asked for opinions on the open forum...Just My .2 cents

Measure once, cut twice, or is it the other way around?
I can't even remember how many expensive construction grade 2x4's
I've made into short pieces. But, short pieces come in handy too.

Here is a link to the Deangelo wrap video. I believe that if one were to watch this several times, a template is all that would be needed.

Valid points. Seeing it was so much cheaper the some offered at $400.00 and more I was just curious if it was really of practical use. I just went back and reread the KJ post and what he says is true. It makes the assumption though I can make my own template have assess to cheap leather wraps and the opportunity to watch someone do wraps for the sole purpose to learn even if they were nice enough to allow you to. Is there anything like that on line? I also see the kit is being bid up now so I don't foresee getting a kit for the original $49.95 starting bid. It is over $70.00 now.

That's not used to cut leather while it's glued to the handle though.
That just cuts the blank to size.
It even has a taper, it's not straight.

Thanks a lot, that video was the nuts. I should have no problem building the whole thing after seeing it.
 
i have the video the template and a whole bunch or different razor types. also bought a 3 foot metal yardstick from lowes that i used to make 2 14 inch sticks for 4.99 i belive.
but i think the easy method for me is in chris's book .i have been using the indexing stock on the midsize hightower to to lock the butt down and mark center down the side using the tool post and power feed . also with a razor mounted in the holder above a bit it will cut a straight line the aluminum angle method on the top will not get you center and the straight edge is hard to hold without help.
now i just wish i could get rid of the line the glue build leaves from the last inch that you glue down when you finish the seam. wasted 2 wraps this weekend .

If you have Chris's book, he walks you thru with drawings etc. I really recomend buyinmg the book, as it has a lot of info for $50. I have found that a REALLY sharp blade is a big plus. As far as watching someone, the only guy in my area won't even let anyone into his shop, let alone watch.
