CR,

As a start, you need to have cue without runout and wraps with consistant thickness. Without those two things it is a very tedious undertaking.

The cutting of the tight tolerance wrap Goove is up to you but you can't go wrong buying your wraps from Martin at Superior Cues. JMO

You need to buy a jig also. Unique sells one and I believe it comes with a video. It is not cheap but it is worth the money.

If you are thinking about just doing you own cue, forget about it. You must do a lot of wraps to do them perfect. Just have a cue guy with experience do the job.

Good Luck,

Rick

You need lots of cheap leather first.
As in most cases, qualifying questions ought to be asked before answering your very open-ended question.
How about a name and what kind of equipment do you have now?
Have you done linen wraps? Can you cut wrap grooves?

My first few wraps were installed with a box cutter, straight edge and 3M spray adhesive. Results were ok, but far from stunning.

Buy or borrow Chris's book or video showing the basic procedures to do wraps. May save a bunch of expensive mistakes.

Having just done some wraps, I can tell you that Rick is spot on.
So many things needs to be right to get a good result.
If it's job you're taking on for a customer, make sure you have the equipment and skills to complete the job in a proffessional way.
The Unique wrap jig is about $500, it's an essential tool.
Make sure you have atleast two of the wrap your customer wants, just in cade you f**k up the first one.
Measure twice, cut once really applies to installing wraps.

To point you in the right direction we need to know what cue repair equipment you have now. If you have one of my lathes already you can buy a leather installation fixture that mounts on the lathe for much less than self contained fixtures cost. You will need a lathe of some kind for the sanding of the groove no matter what you use to cut the seam.

This is what I used to do my first one. It was an old Rich Q with a multi-tapered grip.

This is what I tried on the last two I did. In my opinion It is completely worthless. The arch on the ends was not at all close to fitting the Shon or The Viking tapers, and it made it harder to trim them cleanly after making the first cut using the template as a guide.
I want the $500.00 Porper wrap machine for Christmas.

:/Just bite the bullet and get the wrap magic from Unique, add up the cost of wraps on messed up installs and it will even out pretty quick.
I did this one today:

It is my opinion a leather install either looks perfect or it looks like crap, there is almost no grey area. Better jigs will lead to better results right away, but the best tool is still the hands of the craftsman.

Or you can get Joe Darcy's ( Cuejo ) adjustable cutting template so you don't have to measure.

Since you have already invested in a Unique products lathe I would suggest investing in their leather wrap fixture.

Yes, that's even better.
If you planning to do wraps (note the plural...) just buy the tools needed, mesured in time, wraps spent and frustration, the tools are pretty cheap
