8 years ago a former team mate harold had his cues stolen out of his van.
the whole pool league pitched in and raise about 200.00.
for a custom cue i had for sale that i wanted 325.00.
I donated the rest of the cue for the cause.


Harold has a drinking problem and has turned into a hate full drunk.

I was playing pool at a bar where I knew the bar owner for years and one of the customers said the other night one of the pool players got pissed and threw his cue case in the corner of the bar and stormed out of the place after the loss of a match. the customer gave the pool case to the bar tender.
I asked if i could see the cue because there was a small chance I would know who the cue belongs to.

The bar tender brought the case to and here is the cue that the whole pool league pulled together and bought this custom cue for this person.

It kinda hurt that this person could care less the gift that was given.
the bar sold 8 months ago before the owner turned the bar over to the new owners he walked up and gave me harolds cues.

About 2 weeks later I seen harold a said I had his cues,
He seemed very put off toward me, kinda pissed me off so i told him i would drop his cues off when I got around to it or he could come pick them up his self.
I still have his cues and case and they will always belong to him.
But if he wants them he is going to have to track me down.

The custom cue he was given was my first custom cue .......................
I thought it would of be treated differently or better.
but who am I to assume that.

The cue is beat up now a real kick around I thought about pulling the dents out of the shaft and refinishing the butt putting a new tip on it because the cue could be brought back to life.
But Im not going to waste another breath on the owner.
If he wants to be a drunk. fine be a @$$ HOLE drunk.
I wished it wasnt this way.
I am just venting everyone

That really sucks. Maybe someday he will pick himself up and make amends. Who knows. You did the right thing in trying to help him out, it just sounds like he is in a place where he cant (or wont) really accept the help he needs.

Props to you for trying though. I wish there were more people like you in the pool world.
 
Sad for Harold. He has a disease that seems to be very prevalent among casual pool players. The environment that we seem to have to play in lends itself quite well to such an affliction, even where he left his cue - The Bar. You can wash your hand of him, no one would blame you and it would likely be the thing that most of us would do. You presented him with a gift that was very special to you, he just had a different set of priorities than most people do but a common set of priorities for some casual pool players. I think since this is his cue and it's obviously still special to you, it might be fair to offer him a 10 or 20 spot for the cue, if he's looking for his next drink it might be a sweet deal for you. If he's ever looking for another player there are plenty of 20$ or 30$ deals to be had, anything beyond that he'd absolutely have to earn himself. So you can wash your hands of him, or you all were obviously friends once, maybe you can proceed very cautiously and he'll eventually come around and recover as long as there might a trusted friend to come around to. But one way or the other, I'm sure he'll find his way
 
Your generosity and concern only shows true compassion. Comparisons in ethics, although quite natural, usually lead to disappointment. You had to feel good about helping at one point and it sounds like you might want to do more by fixing the cue. I say follow your heart and appreciate yourself for who you are.
 
Are you sure his original story about the cues being stolen out of his van are true? They might have been "stolen" in a similar manner to these recent cues.

I try hard to avoid people like that. I probably would have simply told the bartender whose cues they were and let him deal with it.

Doesnt make any difference at this point and time I have the cue and case.
I will not do anything with the cue if he comes and gets the cue that is fine.
if he doesnt then the cue will collect dust.
I have already stepped in this pile of shit maybe i will just give the cue back to him and walk away.
still just venting guys this has kinda bothered me .
this is only one tenth of the history this cue has.
It was bought out of unclaimed luggage from the airport.
like the topic said left behind .

Mike, I know 100% you are a nice guy and have a big heart so I can fully understand how you feel on this one. Pretty let down for a start.

If he wants his cue, he knows where to find it.
 
Some people that need help don't always deserve that help. But you and the rest of the league did a good thing back in the day and you're trying to do another good thing by even telling him you have his stuff that he doesnt seem to care about.

I say fix the cue up and pass it on to someone who might actually need it and maybe make someone else happy, if he ever happens to actually come for the stuff tell him you were tired of storing it and sold it for $20 and give him $20 and send him on his away.

MMIKE, you did a good deed when you guys first gave him the cue. You would like to think that people fully appreciate things like that, but they sometimes dont. Some people have a tendancy not to care enough about "free" things because they have no skin in the game, so to speak.
MMike you did and are doing the right thing, dont stress over how other people lead their lives...

Second, I dont like to call drinking a "disease". Cancer is a disease (that you have no control over) Drinking is a choice.
 
Unfortunately Bud, sometimes after the first drink, you no longer have that choice for some people. Alcohol makes that one for you. Quite possibly other circumstances as well.

It is a disease that will eat you from the inside out. It will hurt you emotionally and physically.

Sure, you make that choice to start drinking heavy, after that, you're on your own.
 
harold liver is done he is yellow and his belly is swollen and he is still drinking.
He is hooked on alcohol but he is also responsible for his action.
alcohol or not.
Im not perfect either But the important thing is for me to do the right thing
no matter how wrong harold is, doesnt change the truth.
anyway guys its just a sad story , there is no right or happy ending in this one.

well heres my 2 cents
mike you had your heart and soul in that cue
from the time harold walked out until the pool room closed he never tried to retreive it
he cut himself off from the cue
the fact that you tried to reattch him with it is admirable
but you are are the original "parent"
keep your baby for sentimemtals reasons
