Lessons vs Experience

Whaddayamean, "if you won you got to keep your $10"? You didn't get paid if you won? What was this, a charity event?

What a deal. Who wouldn't go for that.....

If I lived in your area Larry I would probably lose a good 50 or 60 to you. Just so I can watch you play. I think anyone that lives over there that doesn't take him up on this at least for like 20 bucks. Is crazy. Well good luck Larry I think you're doing a good thing.

another broke pro begging for money!

I got this novel idea........ get a job! I'm sick of this guy getting on here begging for sponsors and now asking people to play cheap because it will help your game. Listen, I'm all for improving through gambling , but when you are totally outmatched it's called donating. If you want to improve your game find somebody just a little better than you. or at least someone thats willing to give you a fair game. giving someone your hard earned money just so he doesn't have to get a real job doesn't sound like a good deal to me , It sounds like someone is allergic to hard work! It's too bad people don't know the real "truth" about Larry. I'm not saying he isn't talented. but I am saying what comes around goes around .

Come on now.....What kind of thing is that to say to an accomplished pro? I think Larry is just trying to help out. I would certainly donate to his cause.

um guys call me crazy, but how do we know if this is actually larry nevel?
5$ a game seems kinda silly, especially from someone like Nevel who has played in the US open, and gone deep into an IPT tourney.

I think this is excellent advice. There's nothing like being able to spar with a champion, for small stakes. I'm sure it will improve your game!

...I am offering to play anyone for $5.00 a game for you to get some experience from playing with a top pro...

What an excellent idea!

I hope this works out and other pros do the same. I know I have learned a lot by playing better players and losing, losing, losing.

I'll mess up that "one shot" which costs me the game and I remember it well. I'll then go home and practice that "one shot" over and over.

But if I'm playing a lesser skilled player and mess up the same shot, but win the game, I don't remember the shot I messed up. Don't go home and practice it.

I had a lot of natural talent when I started playing 55 years ago. My dad was a road player before he married and was my teacher from 8 to 16. I don't know if I didn't hear him or I heard him and didn't listen lol. Looking back now I wish I had paid a teacher to learn the basics right. I never made it past B+ player. I feel I could have been an A with a good instuctor. Johnnyt

Is the $5 a game valid for any game? say maybe some 1-pocket? You aren't terribly far from my Brother in-laws, and I visit him every summer. I will have to check your room out next summer for sure.

What I am about to offer might be a great offer for all of you. Instead of paying $300.00 per day for someone who will try to get you to play just like they do.

You hit the nail right on the head there. I laugh at guys who give lessons and want their students to stand the same, stroke the same, and even perform the same pre-shot rituals. I'm against cloning.

Too bad you're in the frozen tundra. Not likely that I'll ever get up your way. I would've liked to donate to your cause. ;)

I would definately spend a day with you, Larry, if it included getting into your head with conversation about your game, shot selection, stroke technique, aiming method, etc., and your critiques of mine. If it was just playing you for $5 a game, I would probably pass...:p

I've been told there are 3 kinds of practice...

-Drills/shots
-Runout
-Competitive

And I know with myself, I can't explain what I am doing (to someone else) for every shot and still play well. It messes up my playing.

So for myself, I like the "competitive" practice with a pro idea. And I would want them to play their best game. So I would *not* want them explanining or teaching while they were shooting. Perhaps after playing, then have a separate "teaching" session or whatever. Or videotape the games, then go back over a few of them after playing. (Additional charge for this of course.)

People often wonder what is more valiuable....Getting experience by playing with better players or by someone telling you what you should do. What I am about to offer might be a great offer for all of you. Instead of paying $300.00 per day for someone who will try to get you to play just like they do. I am offering to play anyone for $5.00 a game for you to get some experience from playing with a top pro. I have a pool room with a very nice new Diamond 9ft table with a day rate of $5.00 from 10am to 3pm. If interested, call Larry Nevel at 608-201-4568. Thank you.

Larry,

That's an awesome offer. If I didn't live 2000 miles from you I would be there every waking hour. This is an offer any "B+" player or better shouldn't pass up.

Lessons are important, but the most I've learned in pool has been from playing good players. Every player has different things they do well, different approaches. Do they take the shot or play safe? Until you are right there with them, playing them, you don't see this. There are little things. They sink in over time.

It's the difference between the "driving range" and Augusta National. Everyone is a Masters champ on the driving range, but let's see how they do at Augusta.

This is a friendly offer. Larry is making himself available to play cheap and he'll play hard against you. You will not find too many players of his caliber that will play for $5 a game and basically free table time.

Who knows? You might win.

It's Larry Nevel, I guarantee it.

He also has one of the most powerful breaks and on the planet.

Well all of you guys that just want to bash someone need to keep your simple minds to yourself!!!!! Maybe you are just always around the kind of pros that want to charge you $20 bucks for an autograph. Maybe you dont care about your game. If you think I am just the kind of person that wants to make a living off other players, maybe you should come up here and ask around about me. I have played with EVERYONE that wants to play. FOR NOTHING!!!!!!! Growing up I have always learned to pay my dues. The only way to practice pool is to play like its your last dollar. Thats why I said $5 a game. Do you really think I plan on getting rich off $5 a game. And for the dumbass that said to get a job........I have worked a regular job my entire life while playing pool!!!! I didnt have any "backers" to blow their money. I played for myself!! I would love to have the chance to play someone better than me for $5 a game. I would love for any of you "top pros" to come do my job for a month....then play me some on your OWN money. Get your facts straight about me before trying talking s@*t.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had the great pleasure of meeting Larry Nevel in the US Open 2005. Although I do not know him that well, I can say from my own experience that he is not someone who is looking to get something from other people for everything that he does. He is one of the most generious and professional player I have ever met.

Larry Nevel is in my book a true class act.

Thank you.
Richard

I'm suprised so many people answered so negatively about Larry's offer. In my basketball days, I would pay 1000 to play against Jordan in a heartbeat. Why a ton of people aren't jumping to play a world class pro cheap games is beyond me. No need to bash the guy. Ever in LA Larry, I'll play 100 dollar sets. Even if I donate 2-3 sets. Money comes and goes, an opportunity to play a world beater cheap doesn't. oscar

I met Larry several times while he was in Greenville and Atlanta area, and I can tell you that he is a very nice and generous as a person and a PRO pool player.

If he was here or I could be there, I would take on his GENEROUS offer to play him, anytime, anyday!!! Look at what some other pro players charge to play or coach!!!

Go Larry, Go!!!

You can laugh all you want. Those players who seek out quality instruction will be passing you by, while you struggle to try to get better. Playing a pro player won't help you, if your stroke sucks. BTW, I'm completely in favor of Larry's offer...it's a great deal. Professional lessons are also an excellent option. I'd do both, if it was me.

Thanks Russ...I'll look forward to working with you any time you're ready!

Larry...Russ is correct. There are some great developments in teaching, that you could benefit from, by learning. Several top pros have come through our pool schools, to learn how to teach better...Allison and Gerda among them. Email me, if you're interested.

There is instruction and then there is competition. Larry is providing an opportunity to play against a pro. Playing an A player and play a pro is a lot different. You need to get used to the mentality that if you make any mistake you could lose the match. I don't think Larry was stating that this was the only way you should learn though.

If I lived anywhere near his pool room I would definitely take him up on the offer. It is a great offer for any A player or better, anyone else though will be just incapacitated. That being said, I gambled very cheap against some low level pros back in my C days. Mainly to say that I did it though.
