Lets all dog on APA

Could we not agree, at least to some extent then, that APA is a good starters league? Sort of the "amateur" league? Once you max out at a specific level, don't you try to find something bigger, harder? Once you are at the top of the APA league, perhaps it's time to try to find some other league to join that has more advanced players. I've been doing some research lately (as some of you know) on what franchise I want to start. From the PM's and the websites, to the testimonials and word of mouth, it sounds like this is what most people do with the APA. People say TAP and BCA are the next step up.

I'm not defending or bashing APA, there isn't one in my city so I can only speak of what I've heard, but it does seem to make sense.

I dont understand during a play off turn. how they can raise ya from a 6-7 the same darn day and put your team over the 23point they did it to my team and stopped us from going to vegas..IT WAS TRUE B/S

LOL, happened to us to.....our 3 went to a 4....and she was no 4....she won a rare match, it happened to be in play-offs, and then moved up

Yes, the APA is a fun starter league....yes, it can be a blast....it's a great way to meet new people, and the handicap let's you play with friends and even family members who maybe don't ever want to practice....

Unfortunatley, some LO's look the other way regarding sandbagging and other issues that should have been dealt with.....it's a great league to bring friends together and have some fun shooting, and typically APA do a damn good job supporting bars with beer and food purchases (tournaments players sometimes do not)....

With that being said, the APA should allow 25 points....the extra two points would allow many teams to stay together....all too often, teams hit the max, quit, and take their money elsewhere....I would think they'd like to keep their loyal customer base....also, their needs to be an escalation procedure when LO's don't handle issues appropriately....get rid of the riff-raff, support your customers and give good service....and I think a number of LO's do a pretty good job for the most part....

So there is no sandbagging in bowling or golf? Hope you're kidding. Are you saying that you would be outed but other sandbaggers won't be outed? That's the whole point, it's tough to sneak under the radar long enough to make any real money. Flight to Vegas, transportation, food, gambling, hotel, entrance fees, APA officials everywhere, etc. all to try and win a mini for a couple hundred bucks? Yeah right, all the road players from around the country are lining up to get in on that deal.
If we could keep things in order that would be good...

1st- I didnt bring up bowling and golf to make a point about sandbagging you might want to reread that part. Only a fool would sandbag to be a scratch golfer, the next level pays pretty good, and if your sandbagging in bowling and carrying a 180 ave. your not doing a very good job.

2nd- I said nothing about other sandbaggers- I said I would be outed because alot of people know me down there. Beleave what you like, but the people that get caught trying to rape the minis are the ones that play the 10 matches needed and then go down as a 4 or 5 and start crushing everybody...stupid...stupid...stupid... If I could start over knowing what I know now about the APA, I (anybody that didnt care to rape people) could go down there and win some lose some and make a killing in 7 days....I know people that live in Vegas and play the Summer league just to be able to play in the minis, because they dont have the travel costs they do very well... They probably be a 7 and 7 this year so it will be a little harder, but the past few years hes cleaned up.....

I used to hand out little pocket markers that were bags of sand.
They said "Sandbaggers Pocket Marker".

It was always a big hit.:D :D

Been in the APA about 11 years. No complaints. Pool isnt really big around here no pool halls left. Our league operator has 31 divisions. No BCA, TAP or valley anywhere near.
So for what it is it keeps pool alive here.

Tap

Instead of complaining about the APA you guys should try TAP. We are at 25 point team limit (always have been and always will be), our yearly membership is $20 a year compared to the APA's $25, we have the Pool-Net handicapping system where we keep track of balls made on the break, completions, misses, safes, balls left on the table, early 8 balls, dead balls, break and runs and 8 on the break. Compare this to the famous APA system and you will there is no contest that TAP enters much more data then the APA. We also have our very popular Rally in the Valley at Allen Hopkin's Super Billiard Expo every March. APA only has a booth. We also move our nationals every few years to different locations across the U.S.A. Try TAP......it is a far superior alternative to the league you now belong to.

everyone keeps writing that they should up the rule to 25 which I totally agree with. Other people have written that the APA will never change it. I say we should all rally to get the rule changed, because nothing is going to happen if we keep it on a local level with our LO's.

Any APA members want to join the rally for 25?!?!

You neglect to mention the whole "Oh no TAP in your area? Give us a few thousand dollars and you can own the franchise" bit. :D

Your right Scott, I did forget to mention that. I was directing that post to areas where TAP already has leagues. As in any business opportunity, there is always a startup cost but TAP licensess cost far less then a APA franchise.

I like all the response this topic has garnered. However it seems some people have taken offense to people complaining about APA. I would like to state that I BELIEVE APA IS GOOD FOR POOL. This can't really be argued. That doesn't make it perfect though and that is what this discussion is supposed to be about.

If you want to defend APA please create another topic about that. This wasn't supposed to be offensive to people that enjoy APA.

Far less than APA indeed.....I may be changing my post about "APA or BCA?". I might just invest in TAP with some of my settlement. Sounds a lot better.

The whole marking the 8ball is kinda silly. I mean loss of game if you hit the ball into the pocket you intended when you don't mark it sucks. Since it is the only ball you have to "call" I can understand why but if the shot is dead straight like 6" away why even bother? Everyone and their mom knows where you are going.

when both players are higher level and agree to pointing or calling the pocket plus there are usually several witnesses this is OK !

if it is just 1 or 2 people viewing or I am playing either a low handicap or a known whiner I will just take the extra second to mark it to eliminate a argument later

Open Mouth and Insert Whole Damn Leg......

Well got my mail and guess what....??? Theres a 1099 from the good old apa....F**********ck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3200$, That means they not only want me to pay taxes on the money I won, and they gave for travel, but taxes on what they say a crappy Cue-Tech and case is worth (wich they got in bulk), but a coat that they are saying is worth 150$ (thats a joke). Had I known this was coming I would have, for sure told them to keep the d*mn coat and the cue, just give me the cash....

I have'nt called my tax guy yet, but can they give me a coat and then turn around, give me a 1099 that is for mics. income, and include the value of the item, that dont sceme right. I can asure you that KNOWBODY would be willing to give me 150$ for that coat.

And know comes how do I recoop my cash, by the time you ad everything together I didnt win c*rap just waisted my time.. What I should do is send them a bill for all the hours I spent at their d*mn turneys to get this stupid 1099. I would have made more money if I would of just worked..

All jokes aside this really sucks all that effort for nothing. Im going to look into starting a UPA league in my area (got the number a few days back), and see about getting BCA nine ball going. I wont get any cash out of it (theres already a BCA guy here, there's just no 9 ball in my town) but if the good old apa can lose a few teams, GOOD

That sux. However I am NOT positive but I think all of those leagues if you play in the nationals reports your winnings. We are headed out to the ACS championships in June & for some reason I thought I heard they take your info for tax purposes out there. The BCA I can't remember as it's been ages since I played not that it mattered anyway as I didn't cash in. Would be curious to know though.

It doesn't matter what pool league, billiard league, beer drinking league, etc... you play in, if you make more than the magic number for your state, you will be issued a 1099. If you aren't, that company isn't protecting themselves or you from tax evasion.

Do you think APA likes issuing 1099's and that they do it just for the heck of it? Your beef should be with the federal and state governments, not APA.

If you really take issue with receiving a 1099, you could just ask that they give you $599.00 instead of $15,000.00 or whatever prize money you might end up winning. I'm sure they'd be happy to oblige.

There Mowem down you got your answer from the horses a**.. I mean mouth. :D

I thought that was the case on taxes though.

Paying taxes on "stuff"

The LAST thing I ever want is IRS snooping into my POOL life

I made it to Singles Nationals several years ago and never realized UNTIL I received my "package" that it was not $10,000 in CASH but only a couple of thousand in cash and the rest was STUFF :thud: (I think that was the "prize" amount - may have been $5K)

You have to be over 21 to play in the league so don't you think we already HAVE this "stuff" (or don't WANT it) The 1099 is probably on the full "retail" price & you will have to take waaaay less than 1/2 of wholesale assuming you can even sell the stuff.

I wonder if you can take "cash equivalent" instead ??

I play 4 nights in "local" money leagues and 1 APA night -I will have to re-think whether or not I should switch that APA night back to money league

For some reason that doesn't surprise me.

I've heard it all before.

I understand now, you are so good and well known that you would be outed by other people who know who you really are. The other guys who are locals but are not recognized make a killing in the minis. Hope I got this right. What is a "killing" anyway? $100, $400, $900, $2000? How many minis can one skill level play in at the nationals including any doubles tournaments? If a player were to win every mini they entered and won it wouldn't equal a "killing" and no way worth the gamble of still having to beat everybody else in a short race on bucket bar tables.

Thats close enough I would edit out the part about me being soooo good I dont feel thats the case but I am kinda known just because Ive been down there so often.

A killing to you might not be 3 or 4 grand, but making 5 to 6 times your ave weeks pay, at your crappy little job, playing pool for 7 days might just be a killing to someone else. And we are talking pool here, making a few grand a week is doing pretty good...
