When I watch pros play it looks like they use a very long bridge.
Why do the pros use such a long bridge?
Is there a specific reason or advantage to this long bridge?

You have more length available to generate more speed if you need it.

I don't think there's any specific reason really lol. maybe it's just comfortable for that particular shot. specially when cb is close to the rail

Pros use a long bridge because of its advantages. For a complete list of both advantages and disadvantages of a long bridge, see the bridge length resource page.

Also, here's a video that describes and demonstrates bridge length considerations:

With the longer bridge, the cue is able to apply more leverage to the cue ball, and therefore is able to increase cue ball forward speed and dramatically effect Spin.
Basically....with a longer bridge there's allot more going on, and since the pros have way better control of this cueing, they are able to let the cue do more of their work.

If it was a 14.1 match finals, and one player was compact and had the standard 9'' bridge distance and the other player had a 12-14'' bridge distance, my pick would be the player with the 9'' bridge, because with EVERY shot, your applying less variables than player with the longer bridge distance.
