Long-running Events in the US

The recent update from @AtLarge on the Turning Stone winners -- 39 so far -- got me thinking about other events that have lasted for 20 years or more. Here's the start of a list.

The Sands Regency 9 Ball in Reno ran from 1985 through 2008 with 46 tournaments.

Derby City Classic, 1999 to present

Turning Stone #39 just finished

US Open 9-Ball since 1976 and now split into two events, with the International Open as the second branch

Texas Open 9-Ball 1974 to present (51 events)

US Open 14.1 1966 to a gradual fade through the 2000s

Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball 1997 to present

Music City Classic, 1982 to present, Job Billiard Club, Madison, TN

Sang Lee/Carom Corner international 3-cushion tournaments, roughly annually, early 1990s to present, Queens, NYC

US National 3-cushion championships, BFUSA/USBA, annually, 1968 to present, various locations

US National Snooker Championship, USSA, 1991 to present with two years uncontested, various locations

Andy Mercer Memorial, Rum Runner, Las Vegas, bar table 9-ball, 1991(?) to present, continuous?

International Open 14.1, formerly Maryland State, and American 14.1, 20th event in 2024. Held in Maryland, MIdlothian and Virginia Beach VA, and now moved to St. Augustine.

Ocean State 9-Ball Championship, 1988 to present (?), Rhode Island.

International Challenge of Champions, Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT, 1991-2016 (ex. 2013), invitational, for TV, promoted by Matt Braun

There have been five or six UMB world cups in the US. That doesn't qualify. There have been four UMB World Championships held in the US going back to 1936 but those don't qualify either.

For carom I can think of two events. The BFUSA/USBA national 3C championship has run each year since 1968. I think that qualifies as the longest run for an event so far on the list.

The other is the series of international 3C tournaments connected to Sang Lee that were held in several rooms in NYC, continuing through the Carom Cafe events. Those were not a single series but I guess they qualify. I think the first was about 1994.

I had no idea the Music City Classic had been running for so long (1982). List in the OP updated.

Andy Mercer in Vegas at the Rum Runner, it’s been going 30ish years. Shane won it a few times. Lots of champions have played in it over the years.

I first went to it in 92, could have been 91. Can’t recall.

It’s still going strong

Unfortunately, there is no single good source of the results that I could find. Mercer died in December, 1990. The earliest result I could find was from 2009 or so.

Added the American Straight Pool Championships. This started as the "Maryland State" championship, then the American, and now that it is moving to St. Augustine with the International Open 9-Ball, it is the International Open 14.1. This is the 20th year of the tournament, due mostly to the energy and hard work of Peter Burrows.

It started in 91 as I recall.

I’m certain someone in Vegas has the records. I’ll poke around. Would be good to have the results and history of that tourney.

When I find them, I’ll let you know via PM. Will be a while, but I’ll remember to get them.

I am pretty sure that the Ocean States Championship (AKA, the Rhode Island State Championships) predates the Turning Stone Classic and it is still going strong after more than 25 years.
