Long sessions and cramping

It has recently become clear as day, that long sessions and i do not mix.

I have always had issues with playing for a long time, but recently, it seems that whenever i match up, i am getting chopped up in what used to be matches where i dominated, or evenly matched contests.

It's not like i am getting tortured due to dogging it, or being nervous as i have gambled enough in my lifetime to not really care about that, but simply because of the % of shots that i miss out of nowhere that i am supposed to make, due to severe cramping or the high number of sellouts when i can't dial in speed wise, due to my arm just blasting away with no regard for what my brain is telling it.

Which in turn translates into LACK of confidence on my part and opponent confidence, and a hole i have to dig myself out of as a result.

I take vitamins, i drink sports drinks when available, but it just seems that as i am getting older, this problem is becoming more and more prevalent.

A typical evening is where i start off great, and i am playing JAM UP, and then little by little after a few hours, I'll get a cramp here and there, and in turn, I'll miss a key shot, and sell the farm as a result.
It gets so bad, that my bridge fingers cramp up, and my calf muscles, and even my triceps and biceps on my stroking arm, which completely dials me OUT of everything.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to deal with this?
I exercise regularly, and i NEVER have a problem with cramping while doing that.

It's ONLY when i play pool. I dunno. Maybe due to certain positions being locked into or something.

I feel like a Pete Sampras of pool, in that i am capable of playing very high level pool, and it's just annoying that when it starts to lengthen out, it turns into a different type of challenge as i almost always have this cramping issue to deal with on top of my opponent firing back when they sense i can't cut it.

Before anyone asks, i typically don't eat a ton while playing. That usually sends me into a food coma which is WORSE then the cramping, so it's a pick your poison type of deal. I do eat, it's just i don't stuff my face.

This is one of the reasons i quit playing in weekend events back in the day cause it would be pot luck if had fatigue/cramping issues or not, and i can't tell you how many times i drove to some far of tournament, only to play phenomenal, and as the day went on and the matches got more difficult, i would just flush myself down the toilet after positioning myself to do well.
Which ended up being a huge waste of money.

Hydration is a biggie if you want to keep things in balance over a long period of time. Some cramps can be caused by lack of hydration. I sometimes find myself not drinking enough water because I feel so good about the way I'm shooting, I don't want the interuption of having to go to the bathroom every 20-30 minutes, but by the time I realize what is happening, it's too late. I don't get cramps, but I get a similar feeling of fatigue and lack of focus that you have described.

Hope this helps somewhat.

I suggest that you schedule a consultation with your internist or general practitioner and go over your symptoms. Have the doctor conduct the following blood tests for disorders of the following:

1. Calcium, potassium, magnesium metabolism
2. Thyroid function
3. Kidney function

If none of the above are abnormal then there are a number of other factors that could be at play alone or in combination. These include....

Muscle fatigue
Heavy exercise
Dehydration
Hypothyroidism
Other metabolic problems
Alcoholism
Kidney failure
Medications

Stress also plays a role in cramping.

Try this...go to the doc, take up a stretching program (Tai Chi is the nuts!).

Drink plenty of pure water, take plenty of short breaks, relax. Go to a local day spa and get yourself a hydrotheraphy massage followed by a full Swedish massage and enjoy the high you get from all those endorphins coursing along inside of you.

Have some good sex (woman superior is easy on the back). I'm serious.

If you don't already meditate then learn to do so.

Cramping

Do stretching exercises.

Salt prevents cramping. We always took salt tablets when training for wrestling.

Play allot more than you have been...........ALLOT...it'll go away then .;)

I will take all things into consideration.

I am a pretty healthy individual so it comes as a surprise to me that it is happening more often, but who knows.

My personal record was playing someone for 41 hours straight, and back then, i was so young, that i thought i was invincible.
Of course i lost my mind during the second day of play and couldn't see straight, but i still bought home the cheese!

Now it seems after an 6 hour session, i am handicapping my own game.

We will see.
Thank you for the replies.

Sounds crazy, but plain yellow mustard seems to help when you suffer from a cramp...(edit) Probably because you'll drink a lot of water after taking a tablespoon of that stuff! :D

Good post.

(Tai Chi is the nuts!). Yes, I was very very doubtful until my wife took it for some muscles which were failing her.

Banannas and salt - they sound like something simple you can start off with. Pregnant women get cramps in their legs like no tomorrow. The docs prescribe banannas for the magnesium I believe.

But above all, after you try the simples cures, see a doctor.

I"m old and old people get night cramps so when I wake up with cramps I eat several Rolaids. High in calcium and magnesium. I eat 8 or 10 at once and the cramps go away immediately. It works!

Thanks!!! I must get some Rolaids. Nothing like driving on a long trip and wishing you had some Rolaids.

If you guys don't mind, I'm gonna skip straight to the sex. I like that part the best. :D

I do alot of stretching... I work as an field archaeologist, so I spend alot of time in odd positions scraping the ground with a trowel... and sometimes just simply digging, which can be hard on the back. So I do alot of back stretches and leg stretches... it helps a lot, but can take a little time before you see the result. Take some yoga classes. Its awesome. Your generally surrounded by a lot of attractive women doing crazy stretches!

Also stay hydrated, and make sure your keep your potassium levels up. On a job, I was working with a girl that had to be taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion. She had been drinking gatorade all day(or some sort of sports drink.) The doctor recommended if your drinking sports drinks for hydration purposes, to cut it down with whiskey... umm.. I mean water. :)
Apparently a sports drinks on its own isn't so good for hydration purposes because of the sugar. Your body's looking for energy, and the body likes that sugar... so as opposed to first digesting the water and rehydrating you, it processes the sugar as a result, your drinking a lot of fluids... but its just sitting in your gut as the sugar/glucose takes precedence in the order of absortion. By cutting it with water you dilute the sugar content.

I don't know the exact science behind it all, and haven't really tried it... as I know water is the best means in terms of hydrating ones self.

I'm old. I'm a diabetic. I get leg cramps. I eat bananas and drink lots of water. (diabetics gotta go often, anyway...blame it on the diabetes, not the water...lol)

I would suggest everyone get tested for diabetes; a little finger ***** may save your life.

I can't believe these PC filters won't let me type in p-r-i-c-k.....think that's funny, go on some European forums and see what they censor...lol !
