Longer Cues for Taller Players?

I am 6'2" and have a 65" cue. It works wonders.

In all seriousness, I use a standard cue but I have lowered my stance. I'm not even sure exactly how long a cue can be made.

60" in max - IMO.

I am 6'4" tall and use 59" cue (30" shaft), but I have played with a 57"-60" before.

59" has been working ideally with my current set-up. It depends on the cue, shaft, tip, balance, and the like.

Mike Davis at 6'2" tall plays with a 61" cue (32" butt) and can't play with anything else. Then again, the shaft weighs like 3oz (Z-2), so maybe the butt has to be that long to get some balance forward.

Go figure...

I'm the same height as Corey, and also settled an a cue with a 29" butt/ 30" shaft. I like the length of a couple of 60" cues I've hit with, but favor the hit and balance of two butts I have that happen to be 29" in length. Maybe someday I'll find a 30" butt that plays as well as my two players,

I'm 6' 3 1/2" and have been since Jr. High. I use 58" cue and used to use a 55" no wrap cue. Never had a problem using either but have used 60" house cues and found them uncomfortable to use. However Deb Shjodt (sp?) is about the same height I am and she is using a cue that is 63" or 64". I think a persons wingspan and the cues weight distribution and balance may play a lot into what a tall player is comfortable with. Many very short people opt for long forward balanced cues to extend their reach while other short people choose a short cue saying they feel more comfortable.:smile:

I like the idea of longer cues. I am only 6' and never felt comfotable with a 57 or 58" cue and made my own 61"er. It feels much better, but haven't played enough to decide if it is to long for me yet. I also left the joint larger than normal and a stiff taper to the shafts. I had heard that longer sticks feel whippy. This one isn't whippy. I may even have to thin the shafts some when I get a chance.

I'm 6'4 and have given this topic a lot of thought, but I have never been exposed to longer cues. I am strongly considering ordering my next cue at 59 or 60 inches in length, I know I could just order a longer shaft, but I would guess that having the shaft and butt the same length would feel/balance better.

Kevin? that you?
I haven't seen you around in a couple years. Where have you been?

Longer cue DOES help

bein 6'3 with long arms, I find it a lot easier playin with a cue 2 inches longer. So yeah all my cues are either 59 3/4 or 60 inches even and all are at least 20.5 ounces in weight, I prefer 21 oz.

This guy

can sound like a nutbag, but I have had one of his 64" cues for 4 or 5 years and would never go back. I am 6'2". When I bought it, no one would make this length except Ronnie and he had experience with longer cues building them for wheelchair players. Now the idea is catching on and several makers are making them including Evan at Shoen. Why would anyone believe a person 6'2" should use the same length cue as one 5'2"? Most other sports; golf, tennis, baseball for example, have had custom length clubs, bats, and rackets for many years.

I had always used a standard 58" cue until about a year ago. I bought a 60" Varney sneaky just to try it out. It immediately became my player. I love the hit, the extra length, balance, etc...

The only disadvantage that I have found is that the 30" butt does not fit in many cue cases. So i have been ordering my custom cues at 59" evenly split. They fit in my cases no problem.

I spoke with Mike D. and I would swear that he said his cue was 62", not 61". I've been wrong before!!!

So, yes, I am a strong advocate of the longer cue!!

My cues are 64!

One size does not fit all! I have seen many players get down on the ball in a comfortable stance and bridge, and their grip hand is at the very end of the butt. I think if that is the case you need a longer cue. I would suggest starting with a shaft that is one to two inches longer. If it feels good, consider having a butt made that is longer to match the shaft length.

To match the weight of your old cue you may need to switch over to a titanium pin or wood/ivory/phenolic joint to keep the weight down. Evan has built a few cues for me and makes all my shafts. The shafts are 32 and are pretty stiff, whippy-ness?? is not a problem. Happy hunting, Scott

When I first ordered a cue from Gus Szamboti, he asked me how tall I was, and suggested a 59" cue. (I am 5'11 1/2".)

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with taller players using longer cues?

it wasn't too long ago that a thread was started about shorter players. people were suggesting shorter players use longer cues. looks like shorter players and taller players both need longer cues

Went looking for a case for my 61" cue. Found one in a Billiard store in a very small N Texas town in the middle of nowhere. The owner said he is getting alot of calls for 60" cues, but dosen't have a supplier who will build them for a price people will pay. I had a 59.5" cue I was making for a Christmas present that wasen't finished yet. He ask what I would take for it when done. Now I have to finish another stick before Christmas or my brother-in-law will have to go without. Never thought the first stick I would ever sell would go to a dealer. Looks like there is a market for longer sticks, if people will build them. Now someone needs to make longer cases.
