Looking for a little advice on Phil Capelle books.

boogieman

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that ping.
I hope this is in the right place, the products section all seemed to be reviews... please forgive me if it isn't right.

I own the play your best 8 ball, play your best 9 ball, and a mind for pool. I really like the books and have found them really informative. Does anyone have any recommendation for the next book to get? I play mostly 8 ball, but also like about anything, including straight pool.

Did anyone find one of the other books that really stuck out to them? Is it worth getting the play your best pool if I already own the books I do?

Thanks for any thoughts!

His straight pool book is outstanding. If you don't have someone to truly teach you the game this book is invaluable. Well illustrated and written.

The gold standard.

Get this!

"Phil Capelle on 9-Ball Archer vs Reyes" its a Book and DVD. He reviews a match between Archer and Reyes and points out the strengths of their decisions and some of their missteps as well.

Make that three for Capelle's 14.1 book. Especially for you Boogieman since you play 8 Ball. Straight Pool is the mother of all pattern games and Capelle goes into a lot of the nuances of pattern play and solving problems in the layout, both things that will help you with 8 Ball.

If you want an 8 ball book, I recommend The 8 Ball Bible by Givens. Lots of discussion about strategy and safeties. The kicking section is quite good too (eg shows simple systems for things like kicking one rail with reverse English, if the natural path is not available)

I like Phil's books but I wish he was less verbose. He says in 300 words what could have easily been said in 30

Add another voice recommending Capelle's book on straight pool. I am of the firm belief that straight pool is the queen of games and that learning straight pool makes it easier to learn all other games. Capelle's Play Your Best Straight Pool and George Fels' Mastering Pool are the two best instructional books I've seen on the game.

Boogieman, I would highly recommend getting Joe Tuckers "guaranteed improvement"! In it you will find 10 drill workouts and 10 shots you should learn. There is one drill, "brainwash", this drill itself is worth the price!!!

About 5-6 yrs ago I would enter the weekly 8-ball tourney and would hardly ever get in the money, I took that drill very serious and in a couple months, I was winning or always coming in the cash! I made over 3k in the tourney winnings throughout the summer:) I owe all that to Joe Tucker!!!

Joe Tucker's "Guaranteed Improvement" get it!!!

Any man that quotes Kihlil Gibran and uses John Coltrane's A Love Supreme as an avatar must be listened to!

Play your best straight pool is very good.

I also liked Practicing Pool and if you are a straight pool junkie, you might like Break Shot Patterns.

I like Capelles books... very informative & easy to understand.

An instructor told me once,"learn all you can from the videos & books, then add to that information with your adaptation. That will exponentially expand your knowledge & skill".

Good Luck...

What is your level, and where do you feel deficient?

For shots, and drills I love Capelle's Practicing Pool, and Joe Tucker's Guaranteed Improvements.

Phil has a new book, Play your best 9ball and 10ball. It is very informative and well written. I had mine pre ordered and Phil was amazing to deal with.

I'd highly recommend Mark Wilson's book, the best by far of anything I've read. Dr. Dave's VEPS dvd series is excellent as well. I second the recommendation for the 8 Ball Bible.

I met Phil at a lesson with Fran Crimi and bought a copy of "Play Your Best Pool" from the display at the front counter and asked him to sign it for me. I recommend it even if you already have some of his other books because it gives a basic overview of his ideas about play in general. I also own "Play Your Best Straight Pool", but I think the first book helped me get more out of the 14.1 volume because it gave me an idea of how the man approaches the game. Both books are first rate IMO.

I highly recommend all of Phil's books. Professionally made with full attention to detail, and his illustrations are exceptional. By the way, Phil happens to be a good player, not just a guy in a diner talking about Pool. I played him many times years ago around L.A. He's a pretty fair shortstop speed, a tough game for me at my best. Plus a damn nice guy to boot!
