Looking for good break cue

Hi.. I was wondering what you guys and gals are using for break cues (including tips and joints). There seems to be so many out there I am having difficulty choosing.

Also, was wondering about the one piece phenolic ferrule/tip design. Any info is appreciated.

Thank you.

i really like my sledgehammer. I think it jumps great, it breaks pretty good. I like the fury jump/break mainly cuz i like how the leather wrap extends down to the buttcap, feels like i have a better grip on it.

G10 tips are the way to go

I've had several jump/breaks. Sledgehammer, Falcon, Blevins. Now I'm using a Gilbert. If you are just going to use it for breaking and jumping, a G10 ferrule is definately the way to go. It is rock hard, jumps great, and explodes off the break.

i have Mezz power break, it's great break cue
X-breaker should be good choice also.

If possible you really need to try several of them. I have bought most of them but finally settled on the X Breaker. There is something about it that works really well for me and for a lot of other people apparently. They are growing in popularity. Not that expensive and really well made. That would be my suggestion.

Can't miss with a Custom Joe Callauca Jump/Break

Hi Irish634,

I love my Custom Joe Callaluca Jump/Break.

It has a one piece natural phenolic tip/ferrule.

Take a look at attached pictures.

I'm using the Jacoby Breaker and really like it. It's got both a laminated shaft and laminated butt. It's a little thicker in the butt then normal cues which is nice cause it gives something to hold onto. The phenolic tip on the cue is great and really makes the rack explode. The weight of mine is 17.6oz but feels a lot lighter. Also, the cue is very good for long jump shots. I've never been able to jump with a full cue till this one.

i have a pete omen jump break.. it breaks awesome and has a longer jump handle making jumps a breeze..

Low road or high road

You didn't state how much money you are working with:

1) Cheap route - J&J break/jump is a lot of cue for what you can get it for.
Quick release joints, mine is a 4 pointer Palmwood, 1/2" phenolic ferrule/tip.
I got mine off Ebay for $44.90, shipping and ins. included. You can get the Butterfly model from Erik Lee cues for $70. They normally sell retail for $95.

2) Other route - Xbreaker (sell for $350-375). Nowrap models are $25 less.

I Use The J/j And Love It. I've Used All The More Expensive Ones And Think The J/j Works Better. I Ordered An Extra Shaft And Put A Lepro On It. I Switch Shafts Depending On What Game I'm Playing It Works Well With The Lepro, And With The Phenolic. If You're Interested In Trying One, I Have One In Stock, Brand New For Sale. Pm Me If Interested.

in response to Looking for a good break cue...

you can't go wrong with a Rick Howard "Mace", he set the standard... I have one with two shafts, one of which is a "Stinger"... the Stinger shaft makes it easier to jump close balls and break 9 ball racks... the original shaft, I use for 8 ball racks and playing on the barbox... makes for a great combination, the only drawback that the Mace has is a lack of a true quick disconnect at the jump cut, he is working on a jump cut joint design now... but a lot pro's who make their living playing pool use a mace, you can't argue with an endorsement like that...

I won't recommend a cue but a few things you should consider are-

1) "If" you plan to also use it as a jumper(J/B) in competition does it meet specs, is it even allowed (APA? as a jumper I mean.).

2) The jury is still out regarding the legality of phenolic in competition, some allow some don't.

3) How about alternatives? the Xbreaker doesn't use phenolic I understand. There are also some VERY hard leather type tips available (fewer miscues?).

I recently got ahold of a Stinger jump/break cue and so far, so good.

Last night after league, I was showing it to a teammate of mine, who's a pretty phenomenal jumper just using his playing cue. I'm still trying to get the hang of jumping, myself. So we start goofing around with this cue, taking the butt end off to just use it as a pure jump cue. Amusingly, I got the hang of it quicker than he did, and I was just *launching* the cue into the air over other balls. My teammate, who'd never really used a jump cue (we play APA) was amazed :D

From all the replies, it doesn't look like you're still all over the map with suggestions...Lol. I am using my custom SP to break with, which is all I can afford currently, but if I had the money to spend, I would go with the X Breaker. I had a chance to try one out, and it felt pretty good...although I am always nervous handling someone else's equipment. I can tell you that the one I saw was just simply beautiful looking, and the fit and finish were stellar. Nipponbillards on this forum is the mfg of this cue, and I am sure would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have concerning his product.

Wow!!... I think I am right back where I started. LOL.

Thanks for all the suggestions. From what I see here, it really comes down to personal preference.

I had heard about the debate on phenolic, but from what I see, the majority of break cues (on ebay), have phenolic. So maybe I will buy a cheapo just to see what it's like.

Next option: X-Breaker or Stinger. Of course there are other brand names out there, but these are the two that seem to pop up most often in my research. I am interested in anyone's thoughts and opinions on these two. Pros & Cons, good & bad.

like usual , i got to give my vote to the J&J. Thx snapshot for advicing me, u where right. 70$ for a GODLY cue, hard to beat. i advice it to any new player i meet.

u can chose between phenolic and non phenolic tip in case the rulez dont alow u to use a phenolic tip
so my advice is, if u got:
<300$ to spend, go for the J&J. (70$ and plays better then most of the 150-200 j/b that u can find (in my opinion))
>300$ to spend, go for xbreaker.

exept a custom maybe, i dont think i would ever buy any other production j/b cue.

just a note: im a C-B player, and before the J&J , on 8ball break, i would move 2-4 balls to the kitchen area. since i got the xbreaker, i can move all 15 balls to the kitchen if i want to. It is AMAZING to break with, and it actually is pritty easy to controle the rock with it on the 9b break. (ive even played with it as my playingcue without noticing it imediatly. it feels very stable, controled, and its a excelent cue.) then jumping. I bought this cheap J&J to learn to jump, and i can only say this; took me 3 try's before it would jump, after 3 more try's, i could jump and pot, after 3 more try's, i was doing folow jump's, draw jumps, and potting over full table lenghts. It jumps AMAZINGLY easy, and other friends who didnt know how to jump all learned it with the J&J alot faster then with the other cue's they where using. Maybe its just in my head, but i LOVE and SWEAR with the cue, and id marie it too if i could :D

I use a Gilbert J/B. Sometimes I also use it as my playing cue. Some players will comment about using my playing cue to break with and I will just tell them that if I can't break with it I don't want it.
