it has been noticed by a few people that when i play on bad/loose tables, i get a loop in my stroke, however a friend of mine that noticed it, has a sub 4" pocket table, and when i play there, i find my way back to a straight, clean stroke. unfortunatly due to schedules and distance, i cant play there as often as i would like. and i do not own a table of my own, what can i do to get rid of the inconsistancies? they plague me the most on long, straight in shots, as it would stand to reason. thanks

I think this sorta thing is solved simply by focusing on your preshot routine. I used to get the same way. When the pockets were looser, I shot a little bit sloppier. I started then thinking about aiming directly in the center of the pocket or to a particular side, giving myself smaller targets. This helped me concentrate a little bit more.

I think you nailed it. For some reason, knowing that the pockets are bigger allow for sloppy play. When the pockets are tight, you gotta really work at it.

Our goal should be to play consistently regardless of the equipment.

that is my goal, but i do not notice it unless im missing ball after ball... i never knew i had it until i started playing more on 9' tables. when i finally find a stroke and consistantly pocket balls, i play somewhere around a B speed, but until then i feel like i have no idea what im doing. are there ways to find a stroke faster?

Spend time with a qualified instructor. When you know exactly what you are looking for, it's much easier to find it, or to get it back if it slips away.

Focus on a good pre-shot routine that you do every time.

Keep your backswing slow that may also help.

I wish I had seen this earlier, I was in NY last week and gave a lesson on Long Island.

snookerncards...I am planning a trip to NE for this summer. I will be in MA (and several other states), and can come work with you, if you like, on your home table, or at a poolroom of your choice. PM me for more information.

If you got a problem with your stroke, I have to tell you that Scott is the guy that can fix it. I've had lessons with him and I run a few straight pool leagues in the Chicago area and some of our players have taken lessons from Scott and raved about his teaching.

Sloppiness is addictive

this is what most usually call free-wheeling, your on easier equipment and play faster, sloppier etc...b/c your not having to be as precise you let your body get ahead of you running out, but basically the balls still fall without a hitch. Then you get on tight pockets and you all of a sudden switch to thinking to split the pocket....

Besides lessons and anything like that I suggest that you forget about pocket sizes and focus on splitting the pocket every time, unless your cheating the pocket. If your always shooting for the center of the hole, then it doesn't matter if the pocket is 3" wide the ball will still fall. Just b/c a table plays sloppy doesn't mean you have to add to its sloppiness by letting yourself aim, stroke, deliver sloppy.

Just say no to sloppiness,
