Lose That Belly And Up your game

Great to hear and good job.

I'm a 20 year old college student, been pretty healthy all my life, but I find that a good diet and workout regimen is the best way to improve your game when you're not at the table. I've dropped a few pounds the past few weeks and I've already noticed a large improvement.

I stopped drinking about 3 or 4 years ago. I cut my portions about in half, no deserts, water instead of 4 cans of Dew a day, and some very light weight lifting. The champs you mentioned were in another era. Not too many champs today that are over weight. Johnnyt

I been trying to cut down on moutain dew but being in the army it's like a must have. Feel like I'm out of uniform if I try to go without one. And great job on the weight loss that's outstanding.

I lost about 80lbs in the last year and still have more to go, but it definitely helped my game. I'm sure there are other factors, but the self confidence boost alone has made a difference. Keep up the good work and don't get discouraged.

The stuff I've been seeing lately has been to eliminate rice, potatoes, sugar - basically carbohydrates. I've been doing that for a couple of years now and have lost 30+ pounds (God, how I miss french fries.)

I think wifey likes the Teddy Bear Tummy anyway.

Well, mine's more like a grizzly bear tummy.

Now, I could try to convince you that she goes for the old "railroad spike, tack hammer" thing, but when trying to provide evidence for this, I'm afraid I might come up a little short.

Thank you all for the kind words and I hope the ones that are trying and the ones that are going try to lose a bit good luck and good health. Johnnyt

Johnny, I'm really glad to hear you're taking better care of yourself. If there's one thing I've learned since making my health a priority, it's that pool isn't the only fun thing to do. The weather is getting warmer in NYC so I'm only weeks away from beginning my cycling trips (usually 50 miles per ride). I love pool but there's so much more to life than what's in a poolroom.

Keep it up!

Good health to everyone.

I've been eating super strict for 3 yrs, and feel its helped all parts of my life. One piece of advice I found worked for me is to get rid of whatever you deem "bad" in your home.

For example, I absolutely love chocolate icecream. If its in my freezer, I will eat the whole thing in one sitting. But if its not in my freezer, I don't even think about it.

That sugar is smart;)

Granted you shouldn't just lose weight to beat your arch nemesis at the pool hall, but you should lose weight to improve your quality of life and keep pushing that expiration date further and further down the line.

IMHO, If we want to "clean up the sport" we need to have pool players who exude health and fitness, not tubby people waddling around the table. It shows that we trained to get where we are, not just hanging around in a pool hall all day eating buffalo wings and beer.

Fantastic job. How did you do it?. I need to loose 20 lbs

I'm Irish and lived in an Italian part of town. At home it was meat and potato's and when eating at most of my friends houses it was pasta and meat...I never ate veggies at all. I eat about the same thing now, but less of it. I have added salad about 5 times a week for one meal that day. I cut out Mountain Dew and drink water instead of it. That's about all I did and I'm very rarely hungry. I do a very light workout with weights each day. Johnnyt

Haha. I'm Puertrican and Italian and I totally get what you are saying... The norm at my place was pasta or rice n beens

Eating less works the best.
Thanks and take care

Fat=eary retirement

I lost 27 lbs in the last 2 months. I feel so much better. I can breath much better and the humidity doesn't bother me much at all now. I haven't had to take anything for pain for my joints and back. I have not had a blood presser pill in weeks. I can play pool for more than an hour at a time, maybe a lot more...I don't want to push it yet. I was 185 lbs, now down to 158 lbs. I was 156 lbs when I got out of the Army 50 years ago. I can see a big difference in my game. I have no beer belly to get in the way anymore and can reach shots that I needed the bridge for just a few weeks ago. Even my stroke is so much smoother. Thank you...just had to brag a bit and hope it helps some to see it can help you're game to say nothing for your health and for players that have beer bellies to knock off a little weight. Johnnyt

We all know people (including world champs) whose careers (or their lives) ended way too early because of obesity.

The food industry intentionally markets the most fattening food, because it's the most addicting and also offers the highest profits.

So you can do what the food giants tell you to do, or wise up and have a longer, more fun life. I remember years ago, when a nutritionist had the perfect answer for the fat guy who argued, "But I love to eat!" He said, "If that's true, then eat better and less and you'll be able to enjoy eating for many more years!"

Sorry for misspelling "early" in the title...wish that could be edited...

Well Done

It's wonderful to hear about your loss of weight.

Yes it makes it so much easier to breathe.

Of course it does also translate to playing a better
game of pocket billiards.

Ha, ha! I'm half Italian, and a quarter each Irish and English. Mom used to fatten up the entire neighborhood on "Pasta Thursday". Dad always got home later than most of the other dads, so when the other kids got done with dinner they'd come hanging around our place. Dad would always say, "Hey, kids, sit down and have some 'ronis", and I never saw one of them turn it down.

Dad was the Italian, but his mother taught mine how to cook Italian, and I still believe she made the best sauce in the world. Simmered for hours and hours, with meatballs, chicken legs, pork chops, hot and sweet sausage, and if we were really good (and we tried our best), she'd make a nice braciole. I did my part by hammering out the flank steak, then snuck meatballs and chunks of sausage when she wasn't looking.

Then there was the big meat and potatoes Sunday dinner, with maybe a nice apple upside down cake for desert. Then beef stew another night, chicken and dumplings, etc. Thankfully we were Catholic and ate fish on Friday or I would have ended up big as a house by my teens.

In spite of all this food (or maybe because of it) I was a pretty skinny kid until I graduated HS. A surplus of food at all times made it something you could always count on, so I just ate when I felt like it.

When I met my wife 35 years ago, I had gotten to the point where I never ate sweets, not even sugar in my coffee. I worked my ass off on a thoroughbred breeding farm at the time, slaving away at the wrong end of the horse for 60 or more hours in a 7-day week. I was a lean, mean 165# when we got married.

I have an easy going personality, and a slow metabolism. Like the riding horses we also boarded, I was what we called an "easy keeper" - I function fine on a "handful of oats". My better half OTOH is like those twitchy TBs we could never fatten up. More like a Chihuahua, actually. She can't just sit and relax without shaking her foot or some other thing. Consequently, she can eat all she wants and never gain a pound. She got me on those damn sweets so many years ago, and it's been Hell ever since keeping weight off.

Anyway, yesterday all I had was black coffee, celery, carrots and a big bowl of split pea soup with two small biscuits. No beer at all, but I did have a small glass of my best mescal. I sipped it slowly for hours, enjoying that smoky flavor while passing on a buzz. Like all addictions, I'll take it one day at a time, and try not to give up if I slip like so may times in the past.

Quitting is a learned art. You fail over and over until you finally get it right. I did that with smoking, although I still have the occasional cigarette. I was a 3-4 pack a day smoker, and it took dozens of heartbreaking relapses before I could finally take them or leave them. Food is tougher because you do have to eat, and it's not exactly socially unacceptable to do so. I still think it's doable, though, in spite of the published odds against it.

Congrats sir !! Well played !! Keep up the good work ! I was just sitting here thinking about losing weight and starting to work out again (I've put some on since retiring from the Army about 12 years ago) and decided since I've read your post and all the positive comments I start tomorrow ! I need to figure out some exercises that I can incorporate the table in as well; perhaps doing some drills; doing pushups for missed balls; crunches for misses, elevated pushups using the table? etc etc. would be nice to see some sort of a routine like that if anyone has one. Where is the drill sergeant when you need him?

Great job! I am a fattie myself and need to drop quite a few pounds! I imagine you feel better in everything you do!

Thank you for the kind words. I like your idea of the pushups and exercises LOL. If I had to do pushups for a miss I wouldn't be able to get back to the table. Johnnyt
