Losing the flip

I managed to get out and play in a local 9 ball tourny the last two Thursday nights - race to 3 double elimination. Last week lost my first match, won three match, then got knocked out. This week I went two and out (ouch).

But that is not interesting. What is interesting is that I lost the flip for the opening break in every match. 7 matches in two weeks and 7 straight lost coin flips. Sometime I flipped and they called and sometimes the reverse, but the results are always the same.

How many matches in a row have you lost the flip?

The last tournament I won I lost every single coin flip. I flipped everytime and everytime I lost. I think it was 7 in a row as well. It seemed to be good luck for me that night. There is no science to it. You have a 50-50 shot everytime. You just happened to lose 7 times in a row - there will also be times where you will win 7 times in a row.
On a little different subject kinda - last night I was playing in a tourney and I won the toss. I was going to break and on my warm up stroke I lightly tapped the cue ball. I picked it up and told him it was his break. He said don't worry about it - go ahead. I said ok - broke and snapped the 9 in. He racked them again and I snapped it in again. The lesson here is don't be the nice guy. Follow the rules. :) I had another guy down 4-0 in a race to 5 and he quit on me. Don't be that guy either. :)

Your luck sounds like mine. If I were to gamble on a coin toss, I'd have to make myself somewhere around a 6 to 5 dog to win. I have seen some guys so lucky that I doubt that I could outrun getting 7 to 5 on the money.:D

i don't flip anymore. most of the opponents in the local tournaments here cant break and run so i just rack the first one, one break against bangers isn't going to do anything. wish i had a place close enough with decent tournaments....

Bah.. Thazz nuthin. Don McKay used to play in the weekly City Lights tournament in Tacoma, WA. He flipped for his first match and lost. The guy ran three racks and out on him.

He goes to the loser's bracket, and flips for the break. Loses again. His second opponent also runs three racks and out on him.

$10.00 entry fee.

2 lost coin flips.

An early exit, and two more hours of sleep on a Wednesday night.

Story to tell your pool player buddies: Priceless! :D

Funny thing that you should bring this up right now.

I played a tournament last week and played 11 matches and lost the flip everytime.

I called about half the time. I called tails everytime and lost, they called mostly heads eveytime. I say mostly but don't ever recall them calling tails. Meaning it came up about eleven times heads.

I don't ever think something like this has happened to me before. However I won nine of those matches. Near the end of the tourny I started thinking this was very odd.

I remember the last two matches of the tourney I won - at that point I was kind of hoping I lost the flip because it had worked out so well (the first 5 matches) earlier in the night. I think where the flip really matters is in an alternate break format with break and runners. Most local tourneys don't have them unless it is an open or 8-9 and under. Even then I don't recall ever having anything more than a game run on me. Was probably just the way the balls layed out (some tied up) - not their lack of ability.

i lost 16 hands of blackjack in a row, i was flat betting $5 each hand. i win one and then go 0-5 so it ended up 1-21, i didnt think i could ever do that again.

That's a quick hundy!
 
old trick to ensure his never happens again: You can flip the thing into your palm, and with a quick subtle motion rub your thumb off the face of the quarter and tell if it's george's smooth dome or the more detailed backside. Then slap it on the back of your hand and amaze your friends with your 100% flip success rate. I don't use it in tournaments :P
 
After I started to keep stats for all my matches, I know that I win 60 % of the matches if I start to break, and less than 50 % if my opponent starts breaking.

Because of this I always test the speed on the table, and I always play for the lag.

I just had to chime in - Me and my buddy both lost 16 hands in a row playing at the same table. Another buddy was outside talking to a friend before we went into the casino and we ended up broke before he even finished his conversation.
 
the flip

while at the memphis classic a few years ago, the guy i was with went to play his match. he lost the flip, the guy ran out the set. put a 7 on him. i mean he never shot at a ball. just racked. 11 hour drive for that on sunday. we still got like 14th or somthing like that but it was brutal.
