Well I guess I'm human...

Saturday night I snag my case and head up to the pool hall to meet up with a friend. I'm shooting with my buddy for about an hour when in comes this guy that we all know. I consider the guy a friend but you have to take his personality with a grain of salt. You all know the type, a decent player at best who thinks he is god?s gift to pool. He barks more than a chiwawa whenever I see the guy.

No matter how much I beat this guy and put him out of tournaments he still woofs. He only does this when there are others around. He is not a money player by any means. He donates his 5 dollars to a tournament and his 100 for his membership to play unlimited table time. The guy thinks that playing for nothing gives him bragging rights.
He comes over to the table and starts up on me. I tell him lets play a little and I will play him cheap if he wants. He tells me ?maybe a little later but I want to spank you a little at some rotation?. I say fine and proceed to crush him at 15 ball rotation then in one hole which is his preferred game.

After we were done I looked at him and said ?Is there another game you would like to get beaten at?? This pissed him off pretty good and then said let?s play for money then. He wants to play 8 ball race to three for 5.00 which I laughed at. I told him that since you are Mr. big dog how about a race to 11 for 100.00. He told me he didn?t want a long race. I then said well if you are supposed to be the stronger player than a longer race is what you should want. He then offered a race to 5 for 20.00 which I agreed to. I figured that would be fine since I planned to be out till 2:00am and this wouldn?t break him early. The first set he manages to beat me 5 to 3. I couldn?t believe that the guy managed to get every single roll possible. I put up another 20 knowing that he is shooting way above his ability and this will not last.

What drives me nuts about this guy is his poor pool etiquette. Woofin before the game and even after is one thing but to do it during a match pisses me off. When I miss a shot I may be mad at myself but I do not make a bloody production out of it. He hoots and hollers for a few minutes and says the ?DROP IT AND I?M OUT!? Line which I find funny because the point is that you missed and it is my shot so please sit down, have a snickers bar and a warm cup of shut the F*%# up.

The next set he breaks and runs out the first 2 racks and manages to win the following 2 since he ran down to the 8 ball and put it in front of a pocket littered with my balls that did not have a hole. It?s now 4-0, I then rally back 4 games and went to lights out mode. The hill match I break and do not manage to sink anything. He runs 6 then I run 7 back on him. He gets pretty lucky on a safe and makes me kick 3 rails. I manage to hit the 8 and make a legal shot but he had a duck and took the easy 2 ball out.

I then go to rack up another sent and I notice he is breaking down his stick. I looked at him and said you are not seriously quitting me after only 2 sets are you??? With a smug look he said yup I need to go. I was utterly disgusted. I told him that maybe next time you might let me know what time you plan on quitting since you are usually here till 2am and it is only 9:30 right now. This goes back to that ?quitting winner thread? The thing is that he knew he was shooting better than he should and that in the long run that would not continue. He has absolutely no endurance for anything over an hour and a half. I suppose that may have been somewhat smart since he knows I can play hours upon hours for money and it is just a matter of weathering the storm which I was pretty sure was over by looking at the last 5 games. Well needless to say I told him he was a piece of crap and not to come over to me again if he is going to ask me to play him cheap.

I did get the last laugh though?. After I walked away from him I went to the bar to pay for my table time (It is charged by the individual not the table). I paid my 15 bucks and asked for 40.00 back. The owner knew that we were playing for something since he saw the markers and people around us were talking as well. He asked me if I lost 40 and I said yup. Wayne then said good that means when he drops the balls off I?ll charge him 15 bucks as well since you are not allowed to gamble on membership. LOL, I told him good and I will stick around just to see his reaction. Man when he came out he was pissed that in the end he only got to keep 25.00:p He then proceeded to tell me that I owe him 15.00 which I politely told him to shove it:D I then advised him that if you have the balls you may have had 200.00 in your pocket which 15.00 would not have been a big deal

If it was me, I would never, ever play this jerk again. People who know you well know how good both of you play. You don't need to prove anything to a NIT.

Yeah that is true. I guess the guy just gets under my skin.

I don't like people who brag and woof and talk trash a lot, so don't think I'm defending the guy completely... but it sounds like he just plain played better and deserved what money he took from you.

Also, you're gonna think I'm a jerk, but I think it's bullshit that he's expected to stick around and play until he loses money back to you. If you're saying he knows his luck can't last, then why would he keep playing? You just beat him a lot in all the other games, of COURSE he wants to be able to quit winner at something. He isn't going to keep playing just to be a nice guy and give you money, not after you said something that made him hot. Obviously it's too late to make you like or respect him so he's not gonna keep playing for that reason either.

You can say he cut it too short and didn't give you a fair shot, but he gave you 10 games of 8 ball, not to mention rotation and 1p earlier. I'd say you had a more than fair chance to shut him up and it only makes sense for him to quit if he got lucky (which I think is maybe giving him too little credit... 10 racks in a row he got lucky? Despite you getting 4 straight in the 2nd set? And the 2 runouts were luck?)

I might sound like I'm ragging on you, but I don't mean any offense, the guy's personality sounds crappy but I think his playing sounds ok and I don't think he was wrong to quit you.

Take it on the chin

I think I'd have to agree with DreeDo... His attitude sucked but it doesn't sound like his stroke did...

nothing wrong with leaving while you're ahead but it sounds like he knew he got lucky and decided to run. if he was that confident why not stick around and make as much as he could

Let's recap. You wolfed at him and got him to gamble with you, then after he took your money you called him a piece of crap. This is beautiful, I'm glad you posted it.

We all know that there's an unwritten code that you're not supposed to quit a winner, but IMHO I think that needs to be established beforehand. I often play early in the evening, but I also leave early because I get up for work at 5 am. On rare occasion I stay later then I should, and yes, sometimes that has been when I was winning! I feel that it's my perogative to go home whenever I feel like it, but I only play with people who know how to behave. The creeps and woofers NEVER get to play me...PERIOD. Lifes too short...Tom
