Only 214 people registered so far. I know that will grow in the last month but it will have to grow in an unprecedented number to come even close to last years turn out.
Also normally you can see what pro players are registered by now and no list is yet available.

hi

allen is one of my favorite guys and i luv that tourney.
i understand he had to lower the pro added money down to 8000 .
due to economics i understand his decision.
myself and many other players will not be able to justify coming .
that event costs me about 1500 just to come out.
its a shame because it was a premiere event for the pros but with 8000 we are being shown once again we dont matter so eventually another event will possibly die. bummer

I am not sure, just asking, but wasn't the $8K number what was needed to qualify for as an ABP points event?

Expo pro event

I am quite certain you are correct, although the ABP requirement might only be $7,500.

For several years the SBE was a BCA points event with $25,000 added.

Seems like the ABP is going the wrong direction.

John,

Why do so many "Pro" players take the trip to Upstate New York twice a year for the Turning Stone Classics? Same $8000 first prize. Probably the same reason Allen had so many entries in the past few years. Everyone competing for those BCA ranking points. If you wanted make the American team for the Mosconi Cup, there were three of the points paying events. No longer a need for ranking points? No need to add more money. Think the domino effect is in evidence here. Agree economics is also playing a major roll here.

From your post, guess you're aren't going? Will sure miss watching your alter ego Mr. 400 run some 14.1 racks. You guys are amazing! Hope to see you in Vegas in July.

if i lived ny i would go turning stone, expo etc.
i live cali now so it makes no sense to have to come in 4th or better to make any money . it seems to me half the players saying they are pros are actually people who somehow someway have enough money to throw away 1500 at tourneys to say they are pros and get in a mag or internet once in a while.
if they truly looked at what they earned at pool after expenses , it would be impossible to go to these tourneys etc.
many players seem to come up with the money in unsavory way or are getting backed by people who earn money unsavory ways,or just dads, friends etc staking a person.
i almost cannot see how more then 30 guys are truly pros in pool but pro events somehow get 100 players etc amazing.
the players as a group at tourneys lose money bigtime. its a shame but if players keep going to events that pay terrible it will happen forever.
oh well thats life

John,

Thanks so much for your reply. Last I spoke with you, you were still back East. You may have been just getting out of the pool room business. Sure will miss your "exhibitions" at SBE. Oh well. Understand the finances of cross-country travel these days. Even Southwest has become just another airline. Price wise. Maybe I'l see you in Vegas.

Hey John,,,,

Do you still have the pool room in Virgina ???

Alan,,,,,,,

What pool room did he ever have in Va?

It was the S-Bridge in Wheeling West Virginia, they had great steak sandwiches he made me one.

He was in the room alot the regulars loved having a real player in the area.

It was nice with big and small Diamond tables, had leagues.

Unfortunately if players stopped playing in these tourneys, pool would just die totally. Its a great game, but sadly, its just like darts, monopoly, etc. Its not a game people are going to be able to do for a profession(at least at a wide spread basis).

I think every one have somehow covered why the sign ups are low. I have no idea what pros are going to play but like John said this isn't a cheap trip to make especially from the West Coast. Not sure how he was getting away with just $1,500 it cost me more like $2k and I don't even play. Also this year will be in a different place and from what I hear not attached to a hotel. So you have to rent a car too to get back and forth to the tourney. Put that along with the Mosconi points are not happening this year so no extra drive there to maybe go to just get the points. Then the $8k added makes a big difference.

I agree 100%. There is a "pro" here who travels all over and still has a hard time winning the local open events. He does win some, but loses more than half the time when he is the only ranked player. Good for him if he can pull it off, but if the best in the world came out for every tournament, he would finish in the bottom 3rd every time.

Agreed. I think the Mosconi point deal is going to convince some of the top 10 US players to drop some tournaments off their usual yearly list.

Thats just not true... All you have to do is look at how pool in the rest of the world is doing. Especially snooker. They're making a damn nice living. It's more about how it's promoted in this country then anything.
