Mabuhay Manila

Very well said Jay.

I just want to add, people who would want to stay/play in Manila should also be with a local who they can trust. Just ask around here and there will be people from the Philippines that will help you. That is very important.

You must also be prepared to play at any type of condition(table, non-aircon room). If you think tournament condition only, you can stay all day at OneSide.

There are a zillion players in the Philippines, but just like in the USA, not so many good players. The filipinos love pool but it is just as hard for them as it is for us to learn. I'm guessing maybe 200 top speed players in the Philippines and another 1,000 good shortstops. There are strong shortstops in every city at the top of the food chain. As for you Chris, I rate you above all the shortstops. It will be hard for them to beat a player your speed, because they are used to softer action. As for the top 200 or so, you will have trouble playing any of them even. Just my opinion of course. In my opinion, any top speed player (Tier one, two or three here) is capable of winning a tournament in the USA, like the Seminole Tour or the Joss Tour, which have strong fields. I've said it before, there are kids over here who could win a major tournament in the USA. I like Landon and Brandon, who are two of our best Juniors, but the best junior players here could spot either of them, and maybe you too Chris.

If a top young player in America was serious about improving I would recommend he come here and only play teenagers. It will be a big wake up call!

I like the part they bring in their champion and he turned out
to be Dodong Andam, who is also a buddy of yours, Jay! HA!

And you played at the YoYo (YOng and the YOung Once) Club's
9-ball tournament at Hobbies! I also play there - when work still
allowed me to do so. However, I'm on the graveyard shift now. Bummer! :(

I have scheduled my leave of absences for September 2010 - all to
coincide with the tours happening this month. Hope to see you sometime!

Btw, have you tried playing at AMF-Puyat Superbowl at the Makati Cinema Square, Jay?
You should try it! 20 pool tables there, including one Diamond! And I kid you not!
Members of the Makati Pool Association hang out there starting 5 PM onwards, Monday to Saturday.
It is also open on Sundays, Jay.

Here's looking to you having more fun and adventures!

hi Jay, glad you are enjoying your stay here in Manila.

Its great you're happy with the tip i installed, i don't do such thing often, Darwin just make a last minute request on me and i was not expecting it is yours. Nice i always have a DIY tools (cutter & sandpaper) on my cue case and Darwin just bought a Glue so that's it.

Man this guy plays very good last night and take note barefooted hahahahaha.

We only have 13 players that night coz the place now is quite small (5 tables) unlike before it's 10 tables. We usually have 20 - 30 or more players attending.

BTW I never got the chance to play with you but maybe next time.

Again thank you for joining our mini tour and nice meeting you.

Enjoy!!!!

I grew up playing with 57" cues. All the old house cues were that length. Billy Stroud and Danny Janes started the trend to longer (58") cues. I'm 5'7" so a shorter cue is perfect for me. Most custom cues today are 58" standard length.

We're the same height. I started playing with 57" cues myself and eventually started getting them 58", I'm going to give this some more thought.
Thanks!

As always, I can't get enough of your postings... I love the way you write and I envy you your freedom to live as you do. Please continue, I really enjoy your commentary and the vicarious thrills of your game.............

nice
it seems like you have a good time over there.
just hold your own thats a start .

Chris, If I played good as you, I would atleast
go see what's happining there. They cant all play like Efren, Busta, lee Van
etc. I bet if you spent some time there
you would have it figured out and make $$$.
Your making a mistake not going IMO in the next few years.

Find a good seat, this may take a while. Yesterday was a full and busy day for me, with the morning spent with my little Jalo. She will be 15 months on Sept. 11. She is walking but not so well yet. She prefers to hold her mothers hand when she walks. She will still not allow me to hold her hand. When I reach for her hand she pulls away. But finally yesterday she let me grab onto her hand when we were walking across the street. It was only for a minute but having that little hand in mine made my day!

After our visit and some more shopping, it was off for adventure for me. I went first to the pool hall where I played so much pool last time. It was closed with only a vacant space where it used to be. BUMMER! I walk on down Libertad, a main thoroughfare in Pasay City. I've grown used to the stares of the people, many of whom rarely see an Anglo face. I do not travel like most visitors here. I stay in moderate priced hotels; a clean bed and bath most important to me. And I get out on the street and mingle with the people. I notice a sign for a friendly family dentist. I had a filling fall out a few weeks ago and there is a hole in mouth. Long story short. A very competent dentist replaced the filling (without an appt.!) and charged me 800p (about $18). I hate to think what that would have cost me in the USA.

Back on the street I was looking for a new pool room and wandered about for quite a while before finding a small two table room on Taft Ave. This place is open to the street and it is a stifling tropical heat. Sorry to say, most American players would not even consider playing in these type of conditions. But I'm old school and will play anywhere! I just want to hit balls and challenge myself. I go in and watch the game in progress between two decent filipinos. They ask me if I want to play. YES, I answer, I want your champion! That brings a smile from everyone. They tell me they have someone to play me and they will get him. Soon none other than Leonardo Andam (the Rattlesnake) strolls in and takes one look at me and smiles broadly. He gives me a hug and the whole room smiles along with us. Leo tells them that he has known me since he first came to the USA over 20 years ago. We reminisce for a while talking about the upcoming tournaments. He wants to play the Predator in two weeks and I tell him he must talk to Charlie Williams.

Now Leo's young protege comes in and asks Leo if he can play me. Sure why not, and I get on the table with this young lad of maybe 19 or 20. Rotation naturally. The kid can play, rarely missing an open ball, but he is careless too, going for too much. I start winning games. It is stifling hot in there and I'm sweating profusely. Andam goes out and brings me back a large bottle of water, a very gracious gesture by the local hero. I acquire a small rag and wipe my face and neck between turns. I'm sweating gallons, a good thing in my mind. I want to lose five more pounds and maybe I will today! Me and The Caped Crusader (I give him this name because he wears a cape like garment around his upper body) play eight games total (a race to five) and I win 5-3. Eight long games of Rotation has taken us maybe two hours and I'm glad to be done. I thank them all and pay 100P for the time and take my leave.

I now walk maybe another mile or two back to my hotel, making one wrong turn, that takes me a kilometer or so out of my way. It is 4PM and I collapse! I have a date with my friend Darwin, who will bring my cue and we will go to play pool tonight. He comes to pick me up after 7PM, and I am still feeling tired from the long afternoon. We go to Hobbies poolroom near the Mall of Asia. But first we eat a little something and I gladly buy our dinner as thanks for helping me with my cue (he refused any money!). It has been shortened 1.5 inches to make it 57" long, much better for me. A new ferrule has been put on and he has a new tip that will go on tonight. Darwin shows me two tips, one a Triangle that is very tall. The other is much shorter and darker. He says it is a hard tip made by Edwin Reyes, my departed friend. I want this tip from my old friend!

Hobbies has moved from it's old location and is much smaller with maybe six tables. All are old Gold Crown III's. These are Cadillacs over here! Darwin introduces me around and I meet Vicente the house pro. He will put my tip on now. Cool! He works next to the table while Darwin and I practice. Darwin is a high level amateur player and he is working me over pretty good. He has loaned me one of his cues while mine is readied. Darwin informs me that tonight is the weekly 9-Ball tournament here and we will be playing. Oh no I think, I'm SOOO tired! The old man hasn't got that all night endurance anymore. But he puts me in (250p - about $6). I insist on paying him back immediately because otherwise he would refuse it. I'm so fortunate to have such good friends over here. Thank you Darwin for your friendship!

The tournament has only thirteen players and it is winner take all! How about them apples. We will play three man ring games for an hour and a half, and then the eight players with the most wins will play the Knockout stages. All the players are half my age or younger. What else is new? I am using my new cue now and somehow I struggle though to the knockout stage. Long story short, I win the tournament, playing Darwin in the finals. Vicente peels off some 100p notes and hands me a nice trophy. How long has it been since I won a trophy. Oh wait, I won one last month playing with my AZ crew. I don't want to say "I'M BACK", but that line works here. It is 1AM now and Darwin takes me back to my hotel. I crash out for 6-7 hours, wake up and come here. What a day!

Jay,

you mentioned the little room you played alot at last trip is gone and another room downsized. Is the economy a actor over there like it is here?? You are our man in the streets and I'd like your opinion of the overall health of the econmy there, I realize its a 3rd world country and thats cool but even 3rd world countries have their ups and downs. So while your there look around and report back how things appear compaired to your last trip.

thanks buddy,

Eric<--------------I'll buy dinner again at that joint by your house(the good one we went to for 3 hours) :)

Great job Vicente and so fast too! The tip is perfect, and will last a long time. Thanks again. I can see that you play good and I'm lucky I didn't have to play you. Maybe next time.

To answer some questions. Yes, people smoke here, but not as many as you might think. In most poolrooms, they go outside to smoke. But in the "outdoor" rooms they smoke anywhere.

Okay, about safety, I may not be the best one to ask. I come from a generation where I felt okay to go anywhere alone and often did. If someone told me a place was dangerous, I wanted to go there. In the 60's, I played pool in Harlem and Watts in the black poolrooms, almost always alone. No one ever bothered me. In fact a couple of times, guys walked me out to my car to make sure I was safe. I was a poolplayer who was only looking for a game and they respected that. Forty years later and I walk the streets of Manila, looking every man in the eye, and responding when they talk to me. I am confident and show no fear. They can sense that. They laugh along with me at what I say to them. "Hey Joe, you want a girl?" they ask. "I already have one!" I tell them. "You want Viagra?" "NO, I don't need it!" So many want to get in your pocket some way. But I have years of experience dealing with their kind.

The economy here is better than the USA! The stores bustle with business and the restaurants are packed. Manila is one of the most populated cities on planet Earth, with something like 20 million people. It is CROWDED everywhere! Streets, sidewalks, malls, you name it, all full of people. Go into any mall and you will see mobs of people, nothing like you see in America. The baby business is huge here, with children everywhere. There is no population control here and large families are the norm. In every mall you will see many stores devoted to babies and small children. For a women to be attractive is paramount! They will spend whatever disposable income they have on clothes and beauty products. Yes, sometimes a poolroom closes but another two may open up.

No pool stories from yesterday. I was sick as a dog! I pushed myself way too hard the day before and paid for it. Walking miles, playing pool for hours in a hot sweaty place, getting no rest for almost 20 hours, and going in and out of an air-conditioned hotel room. I got a sore throat first and then a fever. Lucky for me I can go to the nearest pharmacy and get antibiotics. They now ask for a prescription but you can get around it. I bought Amoxillin for .25 cents each. I started taking them yesterday and am feeling a lot better today. I will keep taking them for the next 2-3 days to wipe this thing out.

To make a comparison between pro pool here and in America, the newspapers have already started stories about the upcoming tournaments. These are feature stories in all the sports sections of every local paper. And on television, Solar Sports (a major TV network nationwide) has begun promoting the upcoming World Cup. They make sure you know when it will air and on what days. It is promoted right along with major golf coverage and championship boxing. Pool is a big deal here! P.S. It is LIVE on TV here! Full length matches shown in their entirety. Just like we might watch a tennis match on television in the USA. We will be on the air 5-6 hours a day, and longer if a match runs over. How about them apples!

Just saw this thread Jay. Thanks a bunch for giving us the updates. We hope you'll have one of the best visits ever back with your familiy and friends.

Sounds like you're enjoying yourself in between being sick as a dog. Jay take care of yourself over there.

Jay I hope you get over your sickness soon, I had the same happen to me when I was there alot has to do with the heat. Try to get some strepsils lemon flavor, they are sold at any gorcery or gas place. helps the throat out alot. Has the manager at One Side taken your picture and put it on the walls there, its amazing the amount of pros that have been there and have signed photos. I was the guy that got the 9 ball in ten ball and had played two sets before he decided to call foul on a shot that wasnt and i gave up argueing.I might not have been able to keep up with his speed if we played all night . As far as him being a top player I guess Im not sure. I just played him as hard as I can. I guess I do not know what level player I am but I play better 9 foot then bar box and my high run is 80 in straight pool. Its amazing how white people are noticed everywhjere you go and its almost like being treated like royalty. I really love it there. I was lucky to have a friend guide me and my wife has family there. The heat is insane, Did you get a chance to Go to Manny pacquiaos pool room?

Thanks for sharing your adventures with us Jay. Reminds me of my youth when I travelled for adventure as well, but now can only relive it through stories like this as the wife is very settled and camps in 5-star campgrounds only. I would love to be doing what you're doing and I'm very envious. Jalo and I have the same birthday, lucky kid...strong virgo! I'm sure that by the time you leave she will be calling you Daddy and hugging you at every opportunity. Stay well, don't overdo it unless you just can't help it, and thanks again for sharing.

Jay, thanks for answering Fatboys and others questions. I suspected that those would be the answers, but was curios as well. I haven't been to Manila since the 60's but was never uncomfortable there and pretty much went everywhere alone. Was always loking for and foud action on the tables. Those are some really good people there..............

:p

I guess I'm in my second childhood. :)
I'm thankful I can still play competitively at my age. My nerves are still good and I can still get down good on the balls. I don't rifle them in like I did 30 years ago, but I don't let anything upset me either. I would guess I can still play 85-90% of my top speed. Biggest difference I notice is how hard it is for me to run balls in One Pocket. I used to run 5, 6 & 7 balls regularly. Now in the same spots I may run two or three.

Today I rest because tournament activities start tomorrow with the press conference and player's meeting. In today's newspaper there is a full page Ad for the Predator Ten Ball Championship. Very impressive!

I'm gobbling Strepcils like candy. They soothe my throat. No pool today.....unless......

Gotta meet you Jay, you are my kinda guy.

I have played in Baguio, Pampanga, and Bacolod City, but never Manila. I never really liked the City, but I am going to give it another try next week. My experience was the same as far as playing conditions (no air conditioning, poor quality tables, sticky balls), but I met very few players above a C level in the rooms I visited. I heard the real players were around, but they needed a reason to come out and play. Back then, I just enjoyed being king of the C's (smile). I am sure Manila is very different.

For those of you getting GaGa about the PI, listen closely to what Jay is saying, because he is dead on. Most guys I know here in the USA would not walk the streets with me over there, as they would feel intimidated and threatened. You have to be careful who you trust, if anyone. The heat is intense and sticky. Western quality rooms are not cheap, and neither is transportation if you move around a lot.

I love the PI, but it takes a cowboy-type spirit to get out among the people in the street and enjoy yourself. There are planty of dangers, but street smarts here translate into street smarts there.

Will be there in 6 days myself and hope to meet you Jay. Thanks for the entertaining stories my friend...

Great job Vicente and so fast too! The tip is perfect, and will last a long time. Thanks again. I can see that you play good and I'm lucky I didn't have to play you. Maybe next time.

very kind words, i just know how to hit balls hahahaha Yes, hope to play with you next time.

Hej Krypto, hope to meet you as well in MNL

I'm glad to hear wonderful stories Jay. Too bad I wasn't able to meet you last Friday at Hobbies as well. But you met my friends, Darwin and maybe the others. Vic is the house pro there, very nice guy. All the people there are nice. If you're still here for the World Cup Of Pool, I would surely love to bump into you. :)
