Made in the U.S.A.

I have been noticing, in my shopping about town, that EVERYTHING sold in the country is 'Made in China'. Are any pool products: Cue or Cases still made in this country???

I think that Schmelke and Viking are made here. I know that all of the custom cue cases (Justis, Swift, etc.) are made in this country. I don't know of any production cases are made in this country.

Does anyone know where this stuff is made? Is there any way to find out? I know it's not posted on the web sites (If it's NOT made in the U.S.A.).

Just my $0.02

Yes, there are plenty of products made here.

You can get the best cues here Dieckman cues are made here. http://cuemaker.com/

There are hundreds of cues built here they just don't spend tens of thousands of dollars on ads every year.

The best tables are made here, Diamonds are made in the USA.

The best chalk is made here, Masters is made in the USA.

The best tips are made here.

The only thnig made in China that is worth having is the people that you make friends with, that are from China.

Then you have to think about how lucky your friends were that they were not born second in their family.

Most chalk is made in USA. Best tables are made in USA. Viking, Schmelke, 90% McDermott (higher cost), most customs are cues made in USA. Other cues and products are mostly USA owned and operated but made elsewhere. I think Justice and Silver Fox cases may be all USA.

Ya, my bad. I know that custom cues, like custome cases, are mostly made in the U.s..

It's the production stuff I'm talking about.

U.S. Made Cases, are many and I will name a few: Jack Justis, Ron Thomas, Dennis Swift, Dan Whitten, Rusty Melton, Nittney Leather, plus some others.

Yes, I understand that most of the custom stuff (cues AND cases) are made here. It's the production stuff that's being farmed out (given away) to China!

Is there something in particular you are in the market for? If so and if there is an "Made in the USA" alternative somebody on this forum will know about it.

You know its because people are cheap...and would rather save a dollar than support their neighbors. I learned how to build cues in the midwest...now I was apprenticing under a cue maker there. I was telling some friends down here about how, hopefully soon I will be able to build my lathe. Was talking about how I'm not going to do spliced cues unless I buy a blank, but would rather stick to harvey martin style of cue. I could throw in some nice ring work, nice wrap or wrap-less. Good taper on the shaft with a nice solid hit. I would like to have simple cues great hitting cues for around 200-400 dollars...one of them said hell i wouldn't spend 200 on a cue from you, just being a jack off.

Point is he shoots with some crappy asian junk...to me I would rather spend 200 with a local cue maker than buy anything off the market. Thats why lots of things struggle in this country, because we don't take enough pride in american made. I mean come on what am I going to do sell you a pool cue that is gonna break or hit like a dog...no I'm a good player and learned from someone who makes great cues.

I'd take some pride in my work, and even more pride in it suiting someones needs. It just kind of disheartened me to hear someone say something stupid like that. Doesn't that matter anymore??? You know being big enough to do the job...but small enough to care? Wal-Mart doesn't care about you, but ol' mom an pop at the local grocery will let people write iou's because thay can't afford to pay right now....I for one will stand by my fellow americans and support them best I can.

Matter of fact if you are ever around Lafayette, La and need a couch to lay on for the night or a good plat of cajun food dont hesitate to hit me up, everyone needs support...if we stop supporting each other, well one day its all going to be for someone else and you wont like the changes...you wont like what this country becomes. A country full of buyers of nothing but foreign items, why you ask...Its all over a stupid dollar, I'm sorry I can't make it for 5 bucks but I take pride and I need to eat too. AMERICA MAKES THE BEST PRODUCTS BECAUSE WE CARE, WE TAKE PRIDE IN OUR WORK.

Best Wishes,
Grey Ghost

I think that's the point I was trying to get to. We've given away all of our products due to our own greed (or need for cheap products). It's just not right.

So, will your cues be "Grey Ghost cues"? When can I expect to see one.

BTW: You can buy full splice blanks from Schmelke, which ARE made in the good ole U.S.A. !!!

This topic comes up every so often. Instead of debating it over and over again I will simply point to this article and video which brings some REALITY into the debate.

The short point is that we live on a globe and every country that practices isolationism and protectionism fails economically. Competition drives innovation. Welfare states that artificially influence the economy fail.

Lastly at least one poster in this thread set a world record in the Masse' discipline using a STOCK Fury cue that was made in China. He used that same cue for years doing all kinds of fancy and very difficult masse' shots. In the last 10-15 years more world championships have been won using Asian made cues than from any place else. I don't think quality is the real issue here.

One of my customers is an American cue maker who sells import cues. He says that if he had to live ONLY on his cues then it would be tough. He also says that many of his customers who start out on sub-$200 import cues eventually step up to his $500 and up customs.

Anyway, here is the video and article, http://reason.com/blog/show/134921.html

And for further reading; Economics in One Lesson

It's quite easy to be emotional about the whole thing and say that America has "given away" it's production to other places but this is not true. Production has always gone where labor is cheaper. It went from Europe in the 1800's to the USA, in the USA it went from the East coast to the Midwest as soon as transportation could support the logistics. Even now companies move their production from high cost states to low cost states. And you don't see people in California vilifying the corporations for moving their production to Lousiana. That's ok you say, it's still in America. Well how about when the Louisana government uses tax dollars to lure companies by offering huge tax breaks, cheap land, free (government paid) training for workers, etc...

And no one complains when foreign corporations build factories in America and pay high American wages and employ Americans. We welcome them and at the same time want to tell those same corporations that we only like them IF they produce their goods on American soil. That's kind of hypocritical. We don't mind when foreign tourists come here and spend like crazy.

The fact of the matter is that we live on a globe and the world cannot ever again be reduced to walled territories. China's mandarins cut China off from the world in the early 1400's and it's taken China more than 600 years to begin to recover. If they hadn't done that then China would be the world's largest superpower and we would probably be speaking Chinese. There is a very good book out that provides compelling evidence that the Chinese discovered America before Columbus and that the Chinese even left colonies. Those colonies were abandoned due to the actions of the Madarins (government) in China and they either died out or were assimilated into the Indian population. The book is called 1421

Well once again I am drawn into this hot-button - emotions over facts issue.

There are plenty of good products made all over the globe. Spend your money on the ones that suit you best and don't be made to feel guilty or "unpatriotic" for buying what you want. If you really want to do something for your community and make it stronger then commit to educating children about the true facts and don't indoctrinate them with emotional hooey. Teach them to be self-sufficient and not rely on a corporate "daddy" to take care of them. Any job that is here today could be gone tomorrow for any number of reasons. No one and no company owes you a job. Make yourself so good that you are a desireable employee and you will always have a good job.

Buy American...

...Yes, I practice what I preach. I check labels often and make an honest effort to buy products made right here...In the good ol' USA.

Both my vehicles are American...Ford and a Chysler. I know what your gonna say...Some of the parts they use to build American Cars are outsourced to China and etc.

I buy as close to American made as I can...Bottom line...I try!

Oh Well...

And you would turn down an order from overseas right? You'd tell them to "buy German" or whatever country they came from?

Or do you want to sell your Cue-Z's to them but not buy what they make?

Come on...I said I try. If I can't find what I need here in America I buy outside the USA. But the majority of my purchases are products made here.

I sell very little outside of the USA. It's probably 1% of my sales, if that!

Didn't mean to get you all riled up...Sorry...Ya know I am a Patriot through and through.
I'm sure you patronize your own country also, right?

Well, we don't make any cases, but all OB Cues products are made in the USA!

We make all our cue shafts right here in Plano, TX. And Dan Janes of Joss cues makes all our playing cue handles. Dan is in Maryland. Our new Break Cue handle is made by Carolina Cues in North Carolina!

So, yes, there are quality made production and performance cues made in the USA. And we are very competitively priced too!

A Little Hey...To a Fellow Joss Tour Sponsor. Are you going to Turning Stone this month?

no, unfortunately.

I will be at the APA tournament. It is just too big for me to miss.

I hope to be at the next one though! I have not been able to make one yet, but I am looking forward to it!

Thanks!
