Marie’s Golden Cue - or “GQ” as many called her - is a part of Chicago’s deep pool history.

The present tense is required because once you’ve established yourself in Chicago’s history, you are always a part of Chicago.

For decades Marie’s Golden Cue was the home to some of the deepest talent, the biggest characters in the game; and some of the most entertaining pool stories and myths ever uttered about the game.
Her walls are alive with the sounds of yesteryear…

She will be survived by her many loved ones: her faithful customers, her dear friends who just stopped by to be a part of the evening, the players, the hustlers, the neighborhood youth who tried to sneak inside…all of them, GQ’s Children.

If there is one thing she loves more than her pool it is her children. GQ was the second home to people from all walks of life;
but there was a link to each and every one of them that emotes pride and joy to all:

The Minassian Family.
The backbone of Marie’s Golden Cue.

The support upon which the establishment stood for over 35 years…
Four years ago, today, a part of that essential link - that support - passed. Four years ago Norma - “Mom,” “Normie," “Flash” - passed away.
Anyone who knew Norma was well aware what she meant to GQ. What she meant to each and every person who frequented Golden Cue.
Like her, a lot, or love her with all your heart, her absence is palpable.

Teddy’s heart…
Teddy was more than equipped to take-up for what lay ahead - and does so with a passion and a care capable of very few business owners.

However, 17 months ago, Teddy fell ill. Very ill. Coupled with the ache of losing Norma was the stress he took on to make her living, breathing, physical memory - Marie’s Golden Cue - live-up to the beauty of her life.
Mission accomplished.

It is with distinct pleasure, coupled with a heavy heart,
the passing of Marie’s Golden Cue is being shared.

Please take time to stop by and share a few memories.
Nothing has changed, yet; and the doors will look JUST like home until March 1, 2017.

Sad news to hear about the room and owners.

Someone local should take many pictures of the inside and outside of the pool room so that it can be viewed long into the future.

This place is an American treasure. Seeing these classic old rooms go away is quite sad. Great pics, btw. They just underscore what pooplayers in Chi--town are losing.

Wow, sad to hear this. In 1981 they carried the first Schon cues ever made. My two friends and I all purchased these early S series Schons, and we all still have them and love them. We would normally go to Maries when Chrises was crowded. Great neighborhood place!!!

I saw Mark Jarvis as a kid, beat Steve Mizerak during his prime in match play there. George Michaels and Tommy Spencer and Joey Golds stomping grounds.

Very nice write up about Maries Golden Cue Mr. Chicagoplayer. I wish they were going to open about a month longer, I would lie to see it as it stands now. What a gem!!!!

Mine too, as well as Tommy Karabotsis, Wendall Weir, and Dallas West. I started playing pool in Marie's in the summer of 71. This was a couple of years before Chris's Billiards had even opened, and Marie's Golden Cue was THE place to play. I was happy to hear that my good friend Wahib Merchant was buying Marie's, to open his second successful poolroom in Chicago...Pressure Billiards being the first. I teach lessons at Pressure every time I go to Chicago (including 2 weeks ago), as it's the closest room to where I stay in Chicago. Congratutions to Wahib, and congratulations to the neighborhood around Marie's Golden Cue.

Very nice article!! So sad to see all these old real pool rooms closing. Reminds of St. Louis and we had a few rooms like that here when I started playing all the way up to like 10 years. I always tell this story but there were 4 real pool rooms off my road within 10 minutes drive. (Teachers -Fairview Heights, IL had over 20 tables), Sharky's (Collinsive Lutmans place had probably 30 tables, and Brendens & Baxters (same owner but both had over 30 tables). All had business I can remember daily going and them being busy every night basically. Mark Wilson also bought a little pool hall that I started playing at called Breakers in Collinsivlle and named it Billiard Bullpen. They are ALL closed... Crazy I would never guessed that. Not to mention there was tons of bars around that had action, tournaments, now there is still a few bars one good place in IL side maybe two.. Bridge Inn and Riverbend. I would say the whole STL has only 3-4 real pool rooms left. When I was 16 there was over 30, just the ones I used to go.

WOW, what a sad day for pool. Guess I am lucky to have had the pleasure of playing there numerous times. The last time was shooting straight pool with Joe Gold on the table he had rebuilt to his specs with the set of balls they kept behind the counter for him. We played three games of straight pool to 150, had steak dinner at Carson's and made a night of it. Great time with a Chicago legend at his favorite room. VERY sad news indeed!

we've must have bumped into each other over the years. Jarvis and Tommy were a staple at my fathers pool room for quite a few years. Tommy I heard died a few years back. Don't know what ever happened to George though ??

And the weird thing is Teddy now lives a few blocks from me in the suburbs 35 miles west of Chicago.

Hi ChicagoRJ, just wondering where your fathers pool room was at? We're from the same neighborhood and I'm drawing a blank. I shot at 20th Century, Little English, and Billiard Cafe. Was it on the northwest side? Thanks

Really? George Michaels?...white haired George? George, who was tighter than tight with Joe Gold? George left Chicago 30 years ago, and moved to Hayward CA. He's still there, and still playing pool...quite well, I might add. I see him at least once a year...usually in Vegas.

North Shore Billiard Club, at Diversey and Clark. Across the street from the Century Mall. He owned it with Freddy the Beard.

The original owner of Billiard Cafe use to shoot at North Shore before he opened up a place of his own. Can't remember his name off hand though. His father was in the restaurant business, and he decided to go another way !!!

Use to play at Little English now and again. I'm assuming that is long gone !!

I lived never Diversey and Central, went to Foreman HS, 1981. That was the last time I lived in Chicago.

Hi ChicagoRJ,

Yes, Tommy S passed a few years ago and George is on the W Coast now.
Joey's here in Chicago.
Wendel visits with Joe.
All is good
Pic below is Tommy, Larry and me during a dinner for the late Charlie Green.
