Master or Silver cup chalk?

I tried using Silver Cup once, and it was junk, wouldnt hold to the tip and i miscue'd like crazy too. So using silver cup lasted about 30mins lol. I went right back to using Master Chalk, and havent used anything else since then.

the worst is Pioneer, i was at a bar a while back and just shooting some pool and kept on miscue'n every other shot, even when i would chalk. Well i finally looked at the piece of chalk and it was Pioneer lol. I went to my car and grabbed a piece of Masters and didnt have a problem the rest of the nite.

exactly my experience. was misscuing like crazy and couldn't figure it out. i just had new tips put on about 2 weeks earlier and thought it might be the tips. i went back to my stash of Master and all was good again. i even tried other new peices of Cup and still the same thing. i don't know if i got a bad batch or what but i went back to my old Master chalk and after a month of testing both i threw away the 40 or so new pieces of Cup i had left.

I just thought of this, but two weeks ago i stopped into a friends new pool hall, in another town. Well a friend of mine just happend to be there. And he uses Silver Cup only.

I ended up playing him a game, and noticed that when chalking, the Silver Cup, seems to be harder. And not soft like Masters.

now me being curious, is there a way to make chalk softer? And isnt Chalk a clay compound? or similar to clay? And wouldnt adding a drop of water to the cube and letting it sit, to absorb the water make it softer? I've heard of guys putting chalk in the microwave to nuke them to make the chalk stick better, but isnt that method to dry out the chalk?

a friend of mine used to add a few drops of water and let it sit. i try it evey now and again when i have time

I'm probably gonna be the odd duck here but after trying alot of different brands i liked triangle the best, i realise it's made by the same company as master[tweeten], but it seems a lot less messy

i agree i have only tried it a few times and really liked it but i have had no problems with masters or silver cup so i have no real need to order myself some triangle chalk.

IPT chalk

is $29 for a GROSS, $22 for members, which when compared to $3 RETAIL
for a box (12 pieces) of Masters, is a bargain, especially since all the players having been saying they like it better than Masters even.

Masters would sell for $33-36 a GROSS.

And just what would I do with a gross of chalk? :D I wouldn't be buying anymore for a while that's for sure.

Probably ...

what I would do, which is to sell it to all my Poolplaying friends or anyone for .50 a cube, therefore recovering your initial cost, and still having enough to last you for a very long time. (144 x .50 cube = $72)

I love Silver Cup because they are based in my hometown of Macon Ga where I own my pool room. I also use Master but always give Silver Cup my full support.

You love SC because you save a fortune on freight costs, a major component of wholesale chalk prices.

The point was that silver cup was the sponsor and they would not use the silver cup chalk.
If Sardo was sponsoring the tournament and the director used a wooden rollar rack to rack the balls. Would that not be odd also?

That has happened already. In fact I believe Sardo was racking with the wooden rack for the WPBA.

As far as chalk I believe that the official chalk is IPT chalk. That is what they sell in their store.

Silver Cup and Mooris: A bagful of garbage in the Taj Mahal

I play with a Moori medium tip and recently got stuck using Silver Cup in league play because the pool room owner insisted that players use it because his tables are covered with light blue cloth and Masters chalk was dark blue.
Go figure.
Anyway, I miscued five times in a game of straight pool to 125, twice during some decent runs. The chalk was not holding to my tip. I jogged my memory and couldn't remember the last time I had miscued before then.
I have been playing pool for 35 years and I have never used a lousier chalk.
If I am ever forced to use Silver Cup again, I will gracefully forefeit my match and keep my cue in its case. This stuff is the epitome of garbage.

I use the master brown chalk...

Does anyone else find that the different colors of chalk play differently even within the same brand? It might be my imagination, but the silver cup blue and green chalk seem too fine/powdery and clogg the pores on my tip real fast, the green master is too course, and falls off the tip to easily, and the blue master seems to be a happy medium for me.

I started using it because I had my shafts redone and cut down and the cuemaker reccomended the brown because it reduced marking and discoloration on my ferrules but I found that it seemed to reduce miscues with my moori hard tips also !

Chalk

FYI
- masters SKY blue chalk is great on green or blue cloth and don't leave black looking spots on simonis tournament blue.

-Chalk is colored with dye, most dye differs in formula, pool table cloth can be effected by the dyes used to color them.. Everyone know sheep wool is white right? All cloth starts from the raw color of the material, in this case pool table cloth is white before sent in to a bath of dye.

-the more moisture you put in to chalk the more moisture gets sponged in to the leather tip then thru to the tendon where it's sponges more moisture to the business end of the wood shaft...

Master Grey. I never use anything else. I carry it with me wherever I go. It's my playoff beard, my unchanged baseball socks, my good luck charm, ect..

I cringe at the thought of using silver cup. Maybe that's just psychological like the rest of pool is for me.

Wow! How did you find this thread that is over 6 years old?

hahahhahahhahah :rotflmao:

I love when I read a whole thread and don't even realize how old it is until someone points it out. Nice one Joe

FTR: I use Magic Chalk and I think it's the best chalk for the money. Predator sounds like it is pretty good but Silver Cup is seriously useless...

its shows instock at pooldawg..

They started making it again. This thread is from 2006, when they had stopped making it. FWIW, the Balabushka chalk made now is different than the old Balabushka chalk.
