If you need something there just let us no, any of us would be happy to send it to you. I have friends in Europe who own American cars and I am often sending them parts.
Thanks for your offer Macguy,
I think I have all I need at this time, but I appreciate the offer. Good to know that we can be at loggerheads on other issues but still find common ground:)

That's great Colin! I would love to have a skyline view. All I have is trees and bushes and the house across the street to look at. LOL I advise on some heavy blinds (thick ones), not the cheap ones, for the times when the sun is baring down on you.

Don't be afraid to pencil the heck out of your cloth for drills. I wish I would have done that sooner and kept from trying to make it look nice for so long. My advice is to use the table at home to practice and then go out to play and see how your speed is gaging.

I found playing at home kind of sucks, but drills and feel practice at home is fantastic. Good Luck brother.
Hey Donovan,
I'm gonna needs those blinds in the hot humid summer but for now it's a pleasing release from the cold.

As the table's new, I'm still a little protective but sure it will start looking like a cartographic map before too long:D

I'm the type of player who prefers playing alone and able to put in long stints of 4...6...8 hours at at time if I build up to it. Takes some mental perserverance to do that and maintain focus throughout.

I'll have to push myself to get out and play some challenge matches against the few local pool stars. Nothing tunes your game like real competition.

Well done Colin ! But sorry to disappoint you, I'm not jealous at all, having a table myself and a 2 to 12 minute drive to the country whose population density is only a few people per square mile (my feable attempt at making you jealous, enjoy the skyline).

For some reason I'm not worried about the balance in your pool routine now that you have a table. A reasonable practice to competition ratio of 4:1 or 8:1 is so much easier with a home table. And I'm sure you're not going to pass up any competitive opportunities !

Donovan has good advice in my opinion. My table is marked with small permenant marker dots (drill the tip of a fine point marker, the dot is 4mm or so) at every diamond intersection. It makes setting up shots much more repeatable, expecially over the long term. It also makes reprodcing shots from various material much more accurate. When playing you hardly notice the dots exist, they are that small.

Dave, who agrees with the rationalization, and thinks it should help you get a round or two farther in the IPT draws, good luck my friend !

I'm a little envious of your own paradise Dave, but for now the fastest growing city in the world with twice as many skyscrapers as New York is home to me.

Thanks for the encouragement in the IPT. I know I would be ranked as an outsider, with no big victories to my name. No reason anyone should expect me to do well other that faith in mates, but I'll give it a good shot and hope like hell I find some good form in the tournies.

I am a competitive SOB, having placed 6th nationally in pool and track and field, so I'm never one to crumble in the face of a challenge. All I can assure my AZ friends, is that I'll give it a hearty go and play some games worth watching.

Yeah, some people think I'm wierd that I can practice for 4 - 8 hours straight. I guess shooting drills has different effects on people. And then to play for another 4-8 hours against people after that, just makes them think I'm nuts.

I had to work up to it, but that kind of dedication and mental traing makes the long tournaments not as tough for me as it is on others. I find that I don't need to warm up hardly at all because of it too. Having a table at home has been the best thing I've ever done for my game, besides getting an instructor of course. My fiance decorated the room for me so it looks pretty classy. I love the ambiance she created.

Congrats, what do you do for a living in Shanghai?
Thanks alstl,
I do sports marketing. Some pool, snooker and golf events mainly. I came to Shanghai as a business english trainer just over 5 years ago and became addicted to the place, as many do.

I started a business seeking sponsorships to run a pool event about 4 years ago and have gradually climbed up in the industry.

Colin,

Isn't there a 9 ball tournament in your part of China now? I heard that Jennifer Chen is playing over there. Is there a web site?

Thank you.

Richard

I understand you exactly Donovan,
Though I played pool in my youth, it was never serious. At around 18 I got seriously into track & field and followed a very systematic and heavily loaded training routine.

When I got back into pool, and decided to take it seriously, I adapted the principles I had learned from track & field training. That is, to work as hard as the body would allow, and so I played drills for long hours. Doing so eventually made me a decent player.

There were a few guys I played with who were keen players. I encouraged them with this work ethic. The ones who put in the time eventually had some worthy tournament results.

Hitting a thousand shots a day for several months gives players the feeling that they can do anything with enough hard work. It builds hope. Others try for about 30 minutes and find only despair and promptly seek a playing partner to relieve the boredom.

Those who can fight through that persistance / concentration threshold are bound for great improvements.

This is odd. I used to do triathlons before playing pool (I know, I know. I'm a big guy now, but I used to be a skinny little sh**). And I found the same thing true. The difference here is that you have an opportunity to make some cash on your hard work, me...I just get to look good walking in the pool room. LOL :D

It's so much better than practicing in a pool hall. No rush, can stop and start and think about things. I'm having a ball!

Just wanted to share my glee and make a few people jealous :p :D

I hope it lasts Colin but if you were allowed to have a table in your living room, im betting you are up there alone. Soon you will long for the rush of a Pool Room.

Afterall you are not going to meet a Xiao Ting Pan in your living room. If you do, then i am really jealous.

I know some people in St Louis who are from Shanghai and run a Chinese buffet. I was in Hong Kong in '72 on r & r from Vietnam, the people seemed friendly.

When I can get to the table, I too will put in 4-8 hours at a whack. I get mesmerized and I am so sore the next day! Of course, I have a lot to work on! I used to do this around 15 years ago and the improvement was noticeable. We are also about to install our Diamond table with Mali 820 and should have it in next week. Before, when I had one, I never appreciated it and would use it for doing laundry. Now I WILL appreciate it!

Guys, I just wanted to share my enjoyment at having yesterday moved into a new larger apartment and had a 9' table installed in the living room on the 16th floor overlooking a spectacular Shanghai skyline with sun streaming through the window.

Thanks for sharing the good news, Colin. Use it in good health, my friend.

Hi Richard,
Yes, last week there was a Mainland China v Korea match which China won, and today I believe a Mainland China v Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) match starting.

Both events are outside of Shanghai so I cannot see them. They are 4 men and 4 women a side matches I believe.

You may find some information on www.top147.com or www.mrtusports.com

Thank you. There is also one more web site I have found, www.my147.com.

By the way, I heard Pan is going to play in a WPBA qualifier in January.

If she wins, I believe she will make her debut in the Caroline WPBA stop in Feb.

Yes, Pan is planning to travel for each of about 8 WPBA events this year. There's been a few TV news reports here and a 15 minute interview on a prime sports program talking about it.

She may also play in some IPT qualifiers if the dates match up. She hasn't played much, if any 8-ball before, but then again neither had Allison or Karen and they were as strong as the top men in all but the break department. I believe Pan has a better more powerful break than those two.

You have a video of that on your website right? Did they get a speed measure on her break?

come on colin, wheres the pics! that Shanghai skyline was one of the main reasons I went to China, fabulous!

U need a lodger about 2 months b4 IPT quals in Nov? :D ;) :p

Colin,

When you were in Orlando did you get to practice with anyone there?

I know when you were on one table LInda was practicing on another one and Ike Runnels was on the third one. Of course if no money was involved then it really is not like a real match. Just fun.

Craig,
You're more than welcome. Have enough room to set up a bed for you...just a mattress on the floor or a big couch. Price is right though:D

I don't have a digi-cam yet. Gotta grab Karen's next time she comes over. Then ya'll get a glimpse of my palatial pool mansion:cool:

I had a few games with the young kid Austin Murphy, but I had no interest in matching up. I just wanted to play a range of shots that would help me know the table conditions better.

I've never been an action chaser. I'll play hard sets in tourney lead ups, or play some locals a few games occassionally after they prod me to play for some $$. But I'd rather play (or attempt to play) my A game in tourneys.

I just don't get a buzz out of trying to win someone's money. In tournaments, it doesn't seem so much like me v them, but about me v the tourney and myself. Just my twisted logic. Never had the gambling bug.

Doesn't she have to qualify? Where will she play in January assuming she has to qualify? Id like to see her. THanks.
