McDermott balicini carbon fiber cue question

Hi,

I have a cue by McDermott that is real carbon fiber. I'm wondering if anyone has worked with this material before? And is familiar with this certain cues construction? It is way too heavy for me, 17.7 oz butt. It doesn't have a weight bolt either, just a tiny screw holding the bumper in. I'm wondering if the butt can be drilled out or taken down on a lathe to take off 3-4 oz since I like a really light stick? Would it be possible then to re-clear coat an make the stick new looking again?
Thanks,
Tim

I've done some work with carbon fiber cloth in the past, but never tried to turn it down on a lathe.
It is going to be really tough on tooling to turn or drill.
The resulting dust is a carcinogen, so very good ventilation and dust removal are going to be required.
Carbon fiber is of course known for it's high strength to weight ratio, so it is not the carbon fiber that is making the the cue heavy - it must be the core material. Even so, 3-4 oz will be a pretty major challenge I would think.
My 2 cents,
Gary

Listen to Gary! DO NOT try to turn down CF unless you are in a clean room of sorts! Check to see if there is a weight bolt?

Ok thanks guys ill let whoever does the work know that if they don't already. Yea I didn't think about the weight/strength ratio. Your right, it should be pretty light I would think. I took the bumper off and took a picture if anyone can help post it. My pictures never post. And there is a small second hole under the bumper, maybe they filled it with something? And it's hard to tell but the core looks like the same material.

I'm not questioning the fact that it is carbon fiber but it is curious that it is so heavy given that the special quality of carbon fiber is it's light weight.. If you did not say it was carbon fiber and were complaining about how heavy it is I would ask you if it is solid black and then suspect it was ebony, which is heavy. Is there a model number on the cue? Did you inquire to McDermott? They are very helpful with information
Good luck

Can you post a picture of the handle that you want lightened?

I only have my iPhone Internet right now, just moved so I don't have Internet to use my computer to post pics, can I post with my iPhone? And I can always email pics to someone willing to help me out.

Some of the Balicinis had 3/4 inch metal plugs/bolts glued in....both to bring up the weight, and to try to market them as break cues.

There is no plug glued in that is visible that I can see. I guess it would be somewhere hidden in the forearm/wrap if anywhere?
And I'd like to get pictures posted. The core around the joint pin looks a little different than the rest of the cue. It looks just like a predator bk2's carbon fiber tip pad.

I emailed McDermott to see what they had to say. Ill post updates.
Thanks,
Tim
