Meeting an AZer

Hello everybody,

I just want to share my thoughts with you - and post pictures of two absolutely awesome Alton caps and maybe more...

About 9 days ago I began to have one of the few very-very best times of my life... After 28 hours of travelling, transfering flights, boarding in Budapest and landing in Amsterdam, Minneapolis and then finally in LA, I got to meet in person my first AZer... I have made many friends and even more good acquintances here on this board, and naturally there are a few whom I don't like too much, but this is the very first time...

I am sure you can tell from the caps - if you have good memory - or maybe you'll find out from the post.

Although I have been thinking about how to get this post done properly for the past 40 hours, I just can't get to it... I'll just go ahead and tell you very briefly, what has happened to me:

I have met a new very-very good friend who I can rely on and who can rely on me too
I have had to realize first hand, in person how true the rule is that you really shouldn't ever judge someone merely by reading his/her posts or anything else that is distant and impersonal - because sitting 7000 miles away anyone can write whatever (s)he wants, its impersonal from this far... and neither not only by what he says but what he owns.

I have read many-many posts written in a negative way about him and I also know that the majority has not met this guy I am talking about.

Long story short after I have finally arrived to LA I therefore began a perfect holiday - because to me a perfect holiday is not what you spend in a 5-star but what you spend with a friend, in a good environment.

As things turned out - I mean after chatting, talking and telling stories for a week - I got to know a new very good friend who's right there with the greatest people that I know when it comes to inner qualities and (as said in Hungarian) the size of heart - and not the size of the pocket / bank account.

That, latter form is how many judge him on here but after the first 2 hours we spent together talking I knew there is SO MUCH MORE to him.

Later on we got to take The Cues out and just due to the negative remarks - such as showing off, etc. - the majority of this forum has NO IDEA what they are missing.

We have been talking cues a lot and playing pool a lot and it is incredible that - along with the fantastic cues - how much knowledge of him is not being posted here.

I really don't want to get too big on words and everything so I'll just sum it up real quickly and so this has been one of those very scarce '' I'll remember this for ever '' times because I have met a new and true friend, and there is no need for terms like good / very good friend - and got to see some of the very finest cues in this world while learning so much about them, it is unbelievable.

I wish I can post a pictures of the cues or at least some of them, I took ~450 photos and that should give you an idea : - )

Until then here are two shots that he said we should post - and I agreed 100% cause it's good to see them in one thread, finally...

As a closing all I have to say is that: Alton, your work is I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E.!!!

Cool

Wow Dave,
You and Eric must have had a good time looking at all those cues.
That TAD Cap did take a while to make, being so loaded up with
features of Eric's TAD Cue.
Bob Hergert did a fantastic portrait of Gus.
Bob's skill is amazing.
Thanks for posting and your complements
Thank You Eric and Dave..

Alton,

Frankly we were having a blast, as Eric put it :) When we arrived to the TAD section he takes this cue out - and this is the perfect proof of your work - the first thing catching my eye was the cap and then I looked at the entire cue... with that cap this cue is finally: complete!

The Gus portrait is absolutely perfect, seeing it on pictures made me think that the whole item is bigger, but of course it isn't. It's small! That makes it so great, all the intricate scrimshaw work... Yet the two other Gus's next to this aren't too shabby either...

Thank you for your reply, it is great how you back your work up, hats off to you!

Dave, you are so lucky to see Eric's collections...did you try to shoot some of his Gus's? ... one day hopefully Eric will invite me to his place and let me shoot one of his Gus cues :)....Eric is one of nicest guy you will ever met. A true gentlemen....

Eric is a great guy and a great host.

While you are in L.A. you might want to check out Hollywood Billiards. When I was there last year I met AZ'ers Bamadog, Tate, OMGWTF, and Melissa Morris.

Thanks for the kind words, the collection really is impressive..... I am sure it would be one of the top2 on here after seeing the entire collection... we were flooded by cases and cues but managed to sort everything out. I think saying that the whole process took more than 6 hours is enough to give you a good idea of what was going on.

Actually the only thing better than the cues was all the conversations we had, the knowledge that Eric shared, not only about cues but partly about the makers and the sources of the cues... After Jay's Pool Wars Eric sure could write Cue Wars, it's been so great.

We had a great time and it's difficult to find anyone else who appreciates cues so much up to their tiniest part... and their playability!!! Whoa, that's a loooong story, I won't even get into it, but for one brief thought: it was kind of funny how I could feel what the cues are like and then how Eric always and exactly described what I was feeling when playing with the cues...

Cues were the reason for us getting to know each other, without them we would not have EVER met and I would have lost a friend without ever finding him...

I think this is what cues should do and there should be less pot-stirring and mud-throwing and a whole lot more of these great conversations we had.
