Am I the only one who uses it? Lol I’m quite the high strung person by nature. People when they see I take it before leagues or a tournament are like omg how do you stay awake??!! Welllll it isn’t Tylenol pm.. it doesn’t knock you out. It just relaxes and quiets your mind so you can sleep… The two things I want when I’m playing pool and since I get drug tested for work and marijuana isn’t an option melatonin has worked nicely? If you haven’t used it and also struggle with these things give it a try and your welcome ;)

That's a placebo effect. Melatonin works effectively only when lights are off or heading to sleep Just take a pm cough syrup or a shot of hard liqour. If it helps, take buspirone in small doses. It does not work immediately though and needs time plus it is safe and low risk. Otherwise, benzos are fast-acting. Most common is ativan but I wouldn't recommend that.

Long‑term melatonin use appears generally safe for up to 6–12 months, but evidence beyond 1–2 years is limited, and new 2026 data suggest a possible 90% increased heart‑failure risk after ≥1 year of use.

melatonin has been consumed for thousands of years, it's in most red wines.

That's using it for sleep.

If anybody is interested in the specifics regarding the advised abuse (yes, it is drug abuse) I will be happy to address it.

AI will not answer you about this matter of abuse unless you ask it specifically. It will give you the data bout using it for sleep by default.

Pretty accurate. It is "mostly likely" placebo.

But I wouldn't advise people to tale anything.

People use cocaine and all kinds of things.

Most folk remedies are harmful, did you know that?

Your observation itself is representative of the kind of amateur knowledge that kills people, literally.

that's a lot of strawmanning from one small factual statement, doc.

I take it like twice a week maybe. 🤷 but thanks. I guess nothing is good for you long term. The 1 beer I have before bed every night is most likely worse for me then a little melatonin. I don’t smoke or do drugs so I guess everyone needs something

Sooo your scared of a little melatonin but I bet you were quick to get your useless barely tested covid shot 😂. Thanks doc. I’m good.

We give our dogs Melatonin (1mg) before long car rides. It definitely helps calm them down.

Personally, I have been taking Melatonin nightly for over a decade. After continued use, the effectiveness wanes.

I can understand how taking something calming would help your pool game. I learned caffeine hurts my game.

You say you’re naturally high strung and that is a definitive problem if you play pool competitively, be it tournaments or gambling.

What most refer to as “pressure” situations, is really nothing more than a biological hijacking. The amygdala kicks in gear inducing fight or flight response. This triggers increased heart rate, adrenaline and cortisol levels. The sad accompaniment to those things is, that “learned motor skills”, such as your pool stroke, go offline and are unavailable, hence the classic choking follows.

I knew a guy years ago, liked to gamble and bet it up pretty high. His brother was a physician and used to prescribe him beta blockers, which have various medical uses, one of which is reducing physical symptoms of anxiety, basically the biological hijack I refer to above. He used to take them before big sessions, cool as a cucumber and never dogged it for the 💰.

Perhaps you should look into that as it’s kind of its purpose and doesn’t place you in jeopardy with your employment’s drug screenings. Perhaps @Chopdoc could chime in on the particular type beta blocker that’s suited for that to help you out. I’ve always played on the natural personally.

Wow, just wow! Medical advice from unknowledgeable pool player, gotta get all over that.
It’s just melatonin man. I take it like twice a week. The fast food I eat is much worse for me then that. lol I talk to my doctor if i actually need advice not a dude on a pool forum who I have no idea what his credentials are .. but you do you:)

High strung does not have to be a problem. I’ve known numerous players who played fast and loose and as good as anyone around
. Caffeine can speed you up and also get you focused. Adderall speeds you up and gets you focused.
