Meucci's, Yes or No???

About two years ago I bought a new Meucci (I know, I know). When I took it out of the plastic tube, out came about a 1/8 cup of sawdust. The old ones are good, but the new ones are crap. IMHO

Apparently there are new or newer Meucci cues out there that do not have problems and play good, but I have not seen or owned one.
I have some Meucci original shafts and other Meucci shafts that are real good, but the overall workmanship of Meucci cues is not good.
In my opinion Meucci has quality control issues that have been going on for quite a while.

With all of the negative stuff about Meucci that I have said and heard over the years, I still like some of their designs and ideas.
I have a lot of respect for what Meucci has done, and they definitely have a place in the cue world.
You have to wonder about the Meucci TQM program on new cues, but maybe the pawn shop Meucci's are the good ones because they are survivors.

My first "expensive" cue was a Meucci off Ebay.
Came with a significant defect in one of the inlays, but the cue played really really well. For a while I thought I'd stick with a Meucci. It had a red dot shaft.

The cue I got for my 12th birthday, and still play with, is a Meucci 95-9. I know a lot of people bag on Meucci, and maybe the product quality has declined to point in recent years where they deserve it. I've never been able to figure out precisely what the cutoff is though, but I know I got my cue right before Meucci introduced their red dot shaft. It has been very good to me throughout the years, and other than getting an LD shaft for it I have no desire to change. Just my personal opinon.

Meucci originals

Meucci originals pre 1984 played good, Shafts were good back then (pre dot). I still have MO-1 1975 / M0-1 1/2 1975 / M0-8 1973 / 84-7 and all play great. If you buy a meucci get a Original.

There have been numerous threads and disagreements on this issue.

Meucci cues with the "MEUCCI ORIGINAL" logo were made from around 1972 to 1990. There was one line of cues, I believe that came out in the late '80s with the new "script" logo, which became the official logo in 1990. In the past decade, there have been fake MEUCCI ORIGINALS made in Asia, and to make things more confusing, Meucci is apparently making cues again with the "MEUCCI ORIGINAL" logo.

I played with a Meucci Original from 1981-1987, and again from 1992-1995, and I loved them. I currently have three MOs from the 1984 catalog that play quite nicely (and are for sale).

In 2002, I bought a brand new Meucci HP3. Beautiful cue. The first time I struck a ball with it, the tip came off. The cue never really worked for me, even when I tried a black dot shaft. I bought another new Meucci about that time just to re-sell, and was amazed to find that when I switched shafts between the two Meuccis, the joints did not line up!!

I've heard that Bob Meucci has straightened out their production problems, and they are making quality cues again, but how can you be sure what you're getting?

I would assume Meucci's quality control is exaclty up to par with even the smallest of production companies. Every Meucci I have handled was completely different to another, even when they were the same models.

I'm not trying to bash Meucci. I've seen some really nice Meucci's. However, most of them were crap. For the price of a Meucci, I'd look for a cheaper custom or if you want a production cue, go with Viking, McDermott, Pechauer, or Jacoby.

As stated a few times in this thread........

Meucci Originals with the Block lettering are what you want. Just because it has the block logo does not guarantee you getting a good cue. It gives you a better than average chance. When Meucci had the block logo, they were still handmade cues. I went to the shop and bought cues all the time.

When they switched to the script logo, the quality went right out the window. I would only touch a script logo cue if it was real cheap and I knew I could resell it very fast.

I would never shoot with it. Not even in a game if were were only playing for $1.

I got roped into a pool game once without my cue. My friend offered his Meucci so I shot with it for a few games, gave it back to him and picked a house cue off the wall.
It's like trying to shoot pool with a strands of cooked spaghetti held together with rubber bands.

My second cue I ever bought new (1983) was a Meucci, beautiful cue, played great. It maybe one of my favorites of all time. I made the mistake of selling it a few years ago after deciding to quit playing and do the married thing (big mistake). Once I decided to play again I thought I'd buy another..... same model (at least looked the same)..... another big mistake. I thought that the reason I played better w/ a bar cue was something that was just a problem w/ me.... I decided to look for a few of my old cues that I had stashed before I got married ;) got out the old McDermott D19 from the '80s (first new cue I ever bought) that had been in the loft for 15 yrs... was like playing w/ an old friend. That Meucci Black dot shaft.... plays like crap, tons of vibration, just feels bad. I have several other cues now and some high dollar. And I hate to say it because I used to be a Meucci fan, but I wouldn't ever buy another unless it's a pre dot cue.

For all of the guys that love them.... The HOF 1 I just posted about above is currently being refinished to remove a small ding... after that it will be for sale.... at half of the original price.

Saw a cue I really liked the look of but never owned a Meucci. Any suggestions. Thanks

If your planing on getting a Meucci get an original one id say late 80 down. If you like a brand new cue then purchase one by buy a used original shaft at least, thats just my opinion.

I would like to see the Asian made Meucci cue, got any pictures of this?

I saw one in a pawn shop. They had tied a string on the ferrule and ran it down and tied it to the bumper.
It was in with the archery stuff. They thought it was a fancy bow.

I played a Moochi back in the 80's for about a month. It was the 3rd or 4th cue I had owned. Used it for about a month, hated it. Switched up to a SP Schon and never looked back.

You are considering one, so I would say yes. Something clearly caught your eye, so go on it.

I own a FR-4 and my father owns a 97-21. We love them! They both still roll straight after years of consistent use. Our league rates players on a "C, B, A" system, with +'s and -'s in between. I am a straight up B, and my dad is a straight up A. We may not be professional, but this is the opinion of 2 decent players who have no problem recommending Meucci.
