Miami AZers - WTB Abe Rich Cue

Up the Irons!!!

I'm interested in buying an Abe Rich cue. If anyone has any for sale, please contact me.

I would also consider working with someone from the Miami area to help facilitate purchasing one (or two :) ) directly from Abe. This would entail getting some pictures and prices emailed to me and handling the transaction and shipping the cue to me. I would compensate them accordingly.

Let me know if anyone has something for sale or is interested in working with me!!!

Thanks,

Eric

Bump!!!

Abe has ties to the past that go back to the golden era of billiards. Just an interesting old guy that makes cues.

Not trying to steal thread...

I would be interested too. I have heard that they are pretty good.

How about it FL players?

Abe Rich

I've got a gorgeous player's Abe Rich cue. I bought it to get some insight into his work...I had the great honor of writing his bio for the 3rd blue book. The cue was custom made for pro and road player Tommy Kay. It was made in 1960. Full diameter and straight shafts of surpassing quality 4.3oz and 4.1 respectively. The taper was based on a Balabushka that was micrometer measured every inch. It has been refinished by Phillippi and has a leather wrap. The wood is from Orion (Phillipines) and has beautiful flame figure. Tommy told me he bought the cue with Tim Scruggs back in 1960 direct from Abe. The butt is old-school heavy at 17.5oz. Nickle ringwork. I bought the cue from a dealer for several trades plus cash. Tommy said it was worth $1400 all day. I will sell for $1000 and include an old Kelly case that matches the cue perfectly. Feel free to ask any questions if you are interested.

A friend of mine has a cue 25-30 yrs. old with "Rich" stamped at/near the buttcap. Is this one of his cues? I don't recall much about the cue as he rarely brings it out.

Wow, Drawman that is quite a cue!!! I would believe THAT cue hit's a ton!!! I've never heard or Orion wood, does it have another name? It is some good looking wood, for sure. It's not exactly what I'm looking for but it's definitely worth considering. The weight would be too heavy for me to play with though.

Axejunkie, your friend probably has a RichQ which isn't the same thing. That would've been made by Abe's brother or cousin in NY. Abe calls his cues, Star Cues and I think he signed them.

Ken, I have no problem you trying to get in on one of his cues. The more demand there is, the more likely someone could be convinced to stop over to his place!! It'd be an easy way for someone in the area to make a few bucks.

I called him the other day and had a very brief conversation with him. Imagine a conversation with a 99 year old guy with an eastern European accent. He basically told me to come to his shop and buy a cue, huge discounts!! He didn't really feel like talking on the phone.

Sounds interesting...

Eric that is something to think about. I have been thinking about going down to Rick Howard's shop. I have a cue on order from Showman, and what the hell maybe drive down to Miami.

Maybe make it the "CUE TOUR".

Sometimes I really crack me up.

Ken

Wish you had posted earlier, I purchased and refinished this cue last year, and I recently sold the cue to a customer locally.

The cue was made by Abe Rich, in the early 1970's. It has a real Alligator wrap, Rosewood forearm and an Ebony butt with rings. I kinda wish I had never sold the cue, it certainly hit very well, and you can't get more classic.

I would love to help you out

I live about 30 min from miami. I have thought often of finding an excuse to get a cue from abe personally. Pm me and let me know how I can help you with this.

I also have a cue that I am 99% sure is an abe rich ( but possibly could be a rich Q cue, not sure). The cue I have is a very simple rosewood with a wrap and plastic rings. I was going to have it refinished by abe. It also needs a new shaft. Probably not what you had in mind, but thought I would mention it. It actually looks VERY similar to the pics by manwon above ( minus the ring above the wrap) .

Taiko

Send a PM to Taiko here on AZ.....he's a real good guy :) and he lives about 10 minutes from Abe Rich's shop ;)

Visited Abe's shop in the mid nineties, guy was hilarious. After looking around the shop for about fifteen or twenty minutes he becomes impatient, and in a very heavy Yiddish accent says fairly loud "well are you buying anything, or not". My buddy and I, both from the Orchard Street area in NY just cracked up. Wound up buying a Helmstetter there, on the next visit.

here's a pic of abe that i've posted here before. i have the cue that he's holding in the pic. i also have a 4 pointer of abe's(with no markings). he hasn't made cues with points for a very long time.

Since this got bumped up I suppose I should give an update on my quest for an old Abe Rich cue. I was able to enlist the services of Jason aka poolpro, to go down to Miami and pick something up for me. It didn't go quite as planned to say the least but I was able to come away with probably the last Abe Rich made cue sold by Abe Rich.

As has been documented, he's pretty old and not building cues anymore. He was pretty much trying to sell Jason something out of a catalog, which wasn't what we wanted. So finally he pulls out an old cue that he started building in the 80's that needed to be finished. Jason sent me a couple pics of it on the camera phone, it didn't look very impressive, I thought about it for a minute while he was gently suggesting that I should leave it, and I finally told him to get it. Another funny tidbit - he charged me for the sales tax  Whatever, I got it.

Jason dutifully payed the man, sent the cue and the leftover money that I fronted him back to me (minus his fee of course). When I finally got it, I knew that it would have to be re-finished, so I called up Dick Neighbors and got him involved. What you see here is the finished product, which looks pretty sweet all things considered. Dick did a great job at a very reasonable price. The wood is goncoa alves, it's heavy and fat, which is kind of cool. The shaft has a little wobble to it, but the old tip is really good, and the cue surprisingly doesn't have much cue ball deflection to it. It doesn't get as much action on the cue ball as some cues do but it's good enough if you've got the stroke.

Thanks to everyone for helping make this happen, especially Jason & Dick!!!

I am glad it all worked out. That sure does not look like the same cue I saw in his shop!!

It was an interesting trip. I showed him a cue I had, and he held it for a minute, and said to his wife " I made this cue about 40 years ago", and went on to describe the materials in it. It was worth the trip right there.

Then things got a little strange. I told him I had called him earlier and would like to see what cues he had for sale. I had talked to him on the phone, and he had said to come on down, and that he had cues ready for sale. I was starting to get excited at what he might have, and he motions me to follow him to the back of the small shop. He opens the door to a large closet, and it is full of cues in plastic sleeves. At first I was amazed that he had so many, untill my eyes began to focus on them. They were all imported production cues with nice little gold stickers listing the weight. I saw some crystal leisure cues, etc. I was speechless. My heart sunk. I exchanged a nervous glance with my girlfriend and began to wonder how I would explain this to Eric. He was saying " what weight do you want?' He was trying to sell me a cue for like $40 or something. He was showing me catalogs and such. I let him know that I made the trip down to buy a cue that he had made, not something I could get on ebay ( I did not say it like that to him).

The ironic thing is, he seemed a bit put off by my insistance that I was ONLY interested in a cue made by Abe himself. I would have thought this to be taken as a compliment.

I kept talking to him, and looking around his shop some more. I am thinking that there was not going to be any cues bought today, so maybe I could get a new shaft for my abe rich cue. He tells me he can order one ( I think from a balabushka ( adam) catalog. I again tell him that I was looking for an original shaft. He seems a bit irritated, and finally tries a couple of random shafts that are laying around, no matches.

He then pulls out a plain looking cue that has the right joint and rings and puts the shaft on my cue. I start to check out the cue and ask him what it was. He tells me it was one of his that he had made a while back. I start to perk up a bit. I ask him if it would sell it. He almost seems to mull it over a bit. I started to take pics and contact Eric about what I had found. It was pretty rough and needed some TLC. I had nothing to roll it on, so I sighted down it the best I could. I tried to give the most accurate description I could, but did not want to "sell" it as I know it was not what either of us had in mind. I get the green light to buy it, and Abe almost seems suspicious about the fact that I do actually intend to buy it.

I had already spent more time than I intended, and am going to be late for a county final match an hours drive away. I pull out the money, he won't budge a nickel on the price, AND adds tax. I give him the money, and he is surprised that I do not have exact change. I had close to the right amount, but it would have been in my favor. That was not an option. So I had to wait for an eternity for him to find the change to give me and write a receipt. At this point I practically ran out of there to get back on the road.

All in all, I am very glad to have met him. He is a part of traditional cuemaking history.

Eric,I hope you enjoy the cue. As you say, I believe it is almost certainly the last abe rich cue that he personally sold.

Abe Rich

Died on 11/26 I think. My date might be off. I used to stop by his shop every Saturday while I was out skating ( inline skating ).

What an amazing volume of wood he had in that shop, all salt soaked I'm sure. One day I asked him about selling some of the wood. You would have thought I asked to sleep with his girlfriend. He looked at me like I was crazy, and asked if I had any idea how long it would take him to replace it. Not that he was ever going to build another cue at that point.

That "wife" you mentioned earlier, someone mentioned her, was Abe's girl friend. I never left his shop without him telling me "let me teach you something, you're a young man yet" and he would give me some little piece of advice like, wrap your cues in an old army blanket if you have to leave them in the car.

It was a long time since he made a cue himself although at some point a few years back, he "found" a stash of old Florida City cues he made while he worked with them. 15 oz, 16 oz, all VERY light weight. He was certainly a piece of pool history. Everyone down this way wanted an Abe Rich sneaky pete at one time.
