Micarta or Ageis?

I just got a custom cue that was made 5 years ago. I asked the cue maker in person what type of ferule he put on it. He said micarta. The local cue guru said it was ageis. OK now before you flame me for doubting the guy that made it,it was 5 years ago and he uses juma now. Is there any way to tell by looking at it? I looked closely and it looked like it was woven on an angle. It is pure white.

The biggest difference I have seen between Macarta and Ageis is the hit. Ageis has a very solid hit / stiff hit, Macarta has much softer hit in my opinion. Sometime dung the late 80's or early 90's Ageis started being used on all Joss cues, unless the cue has Ivory. Ageis is a very strong material that is very very hard to crack or break. The main down fall I have seen when using Ageis is that almost all I have seen has little pits in it so ferrules made from it get dirty looking very quickly.

Most Ageis will be dirty looking and you will be able to see the fibers that make up the weave in the material.

Hope this helps, and if you have time post a photo of your ferrule it would help to identify the material it is made from.

And here I was beating myself up because every Aegis ferrule I install looks like crap. I guess swearing off the stuff might be a good idea? I do have a micarta ferrule on a cue from before I bought a lathe. I love the firmness of the micarta. I think it's a firmer hit than anything else I have, which is mostly Ivorine II and III. My micarta ferrule is yellowish. It came from Alex Brick. Just like he said; good stuff.

Since nobody else has said much...From my own experience (which is from 20 years of playing and only about half a year of making cues), Ivorines and Aegis are quite white, Westinghouse Micarta looks yellowish and Juma is in between but still more white than yellow. If Dale says different, go with him.
