Mike Dechaine : Things for you to know

Funny.
Would CW be letting the cast of the TV show play for FREE free? Or would he actually pay their entry fees into the tournament. Be kinda bad if no money was added to the tournament prize fund for them. That's basically ripping off everyone who DID pay an entry fee that subsequently got added to the prize fund.
How would one feel if they got knocked out of the tournament by someone who didn't pay an entry fee because they were on the TV show?
Lol. Even better, what if one of the cast of the TV show went on to win it? What would happen to that prize money that they aren't allowed to win? Would it get added to everyone else's prize money, or would it just vanish?
All these questions...
Dude we're famous relax lol. Seriously though nobody would have made the top 32 so we weren't knocking out anyone.

One thing I can say is that Charlie made an offer to the cast of The Hustlers to come play in the straight pool for free. He did stipulate that if you play for free you can't win the prize money though. I thought it was a good deal cause most of us don't get a chance to compete with that level of player on a regular basis nor are we going to be winning very much plus we save the $600 entry. That would have been mutually beneficial. We all have jobs though so we didn't play.

I still feel like it's a non issue, if I want to call out of work or decline a job it's nobody's place to tell me I should have to do otherwise. This would be different if Charlie would have paid Mike D. to play or refused to refund an entry fee and held the money. With the way it is though both people get to walk away clean and move on.

One big non-issue but pool is weird like that, we'd rather talk about who didn't play more than who is playing. This isn't anything compared to the shenanigans that has gone on at the US Open for the last 6 years. No players made a stand there huh?

Not many, if at all, have a more greasy track record than CW, not saying he won't pull a good PR move every now and then. When you add up all of the issues he's had with so many different people it amounts to a huge pile of shit, but most of the players bow down to him still. He's just a creep, don't think that will ever change in my mind.

KK9 & i discussed it tonight while watching Caitlyn Jenner cause we couldn't get volume on the HOF Awards (BTW - KK9 wants to know by what Rights are there for CW to induct into the HOF...?), and we concluded, from a business standpoint, that:

Mike Deschaine should have been allowed to played under whatever measures, if, for no other reason, than TO FURTHER PROMOTE POOL. whether it be under the guise of The Hustlers, what-have-you....

and IF....

Mike Deschaine had WON, then it would have been a win-win! :woot:

as well, we respect ANY pool player for taking a stand against a "fixed" tourney. (Hell, it's about time, Pros!) perhaps THAT, is what Mosconi is looking for in its players, & Mike's trying to show?

CW completely missed it on this one.

What about the money?
Would CW have paid the entry fees for all you famous people or would he have just let you play?
It's still a relevant question even if you guys aren't knocking anyone out.
You guys would have represented people in the tournament who could alter the outcomes of people who paid to play. Whether it be by winning an actual match, or even how bad you guys get pounded in terms of your opponents overall ball pocketed count should it come down to a tie somewhere between two people.
If you guys had the potential to alter outcomes for people that paid $$ or how prize money was distributed, it only seems right that CW would have put up the money.
Did any cast members play?
If so, what was their track record?

If nobody from the show played, then CW can say whatever, that he would have paid the entry fees, yada yada yada.

But if someone from the show did play, it would be interesting to know if an entry fee was put in the prize fund for them or not.

IMO, Charlie was only trying to align himself with the show. Why else would he invite the cast to play in a "World" event..... what a joke.
I wonder how many of the 14.1 world class players would of liked that. No offense to any of the cast, I like the show, but just by asking them to play, he was trying to turn it into a circus.

Mike Dechaine did not let is emotions get in the way of his critical thinking. Well played Mike.

No one played and thank god cause who knew there would have been guys like you out there looking to burn us at the stake. We didn't have the time or we would have. Yes it would have brought some excitement in and perhaps some additional PPV's and people into the pool room. Some people's time is worth more than money. Bean counting is exactly why pool is in the state it is in now. Can't even help out the game anymore cause it's clearly doing so well on its own. Your negativity is a bit much

no Honey, it's just good business. he could have tied your show (The Hustlers), with his tourney. but to make it fair, he should have covered yáll's entries (or had TruTV do so). it could have promoted pool, your show, and you players' future incomes. apparently no one thought to work this deal?

i would have expected, that as a promoter AND a pro player, that Charlie would have yáll's back.

imagine the ratings yáll would have gotten if TruTV had caught this whole MD-thing on camera????

I'm not ripping on anyone from the show, and I sure as hell ain't ripping on you.

Let me ask you something. When you go to play in a tournament, do you do the math to see if the money is right?
If the money happens to be wrong, do you speak up about it, or do you let whoever might be manipulating the money or pocketing a little extra cash, get away with it?

That's all I'm asking when I bring up the money.
It would be a good thing if pool were on the map the way it used to be so long ago. All good publicity helps. So despite thinking that the show could maybe have some stronger players in it, it's good regardless because it draws attention to pool.
That being said, I can see how having players from the show play in the tournament might be a good thing. It would be an awesome thing if they actually filmed players from the show competing in the tournament.
If you were to get a free ride to play, that's GREAT,

But this is CW we are talking about. So if someone paid an entry fee and travelled from who knows where, I'm sure they would be wondering if CW paid for all the "free" entries, because that is money that should go to the prize fund and "free" should mean that it's free to the cast member, but that CW is actually putting up the money for each of them.

It's just business.
Pool players get fleeced enough as it is, so they should bean count each and every dime.
Heck, there was more prize money in this tournament 25 years ago!
If THAT doesn't spell it out right there, I don't know WHAT does.
If a pool player is playing, and they aren't doing the math, that's just stupid.

There are always lots of entrants who really don't belong in a "World" event, except that their dead money helps pump up the prize fund.

As to the Hustlers, Gary O'Callaghan played in this event in 2012 and 2013. In 2012 he won 3 matches in the round-robin (over Zaid Thweib, Peter Burrows, and Tom Gleich) then lost to Thweib and Brandon Shuff in the double-elimination matches. In 2013, O'Callaghan went 1-4 in the round-robin portion with the win being against Sean Morgan.

Exactly this. If a promoter 'puts in' players and doesn't add their entry fee to the tournament out of his pocket. Then the other players technically 'put them in' the tournament.

It's easy to be generous with other people's money.

don't confuse me with the facts - numbers are NOT absolute!

if i had spent a week trying to rearrange my schedule & fit this tourney in, only to be screwed & out-of-pocket...."slightly pissed" wouldn't even begin to cover my reaction.

so who were the others that CW backed @ 50/50???? the ones who were so vocal on FaceBook?

In this tournament? I have no idea.
Honestly, I could care less about what it going on in pool these days and that applies even more so when it's about an event that CW is putting on.

But if he is backing players in the tournament, that's not out of line. I've seen lots of promoters/tour directors do it. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Now if the player gets special treatment from the person putting them in, like rigged draws, changing scheduled match times to accomodate them, being lenient with the clock when the player is late, etc etc, THAT is a completely different issue altogether.
The promoters/tournament directors who do that should just into oncoming traffic.
