Mike Deschaine 11-3 over SVB.

i agree with you on both points, my math is fuzzy today. I stand corrected, well actually i'm laying in bed my back isnt doing to good-so i'm laying here corrected.

And your right it does take a bit off mikes achievement, i'm just real proud of him and I feel bad for Shane at the same time. Its a brutal world-pool that is.

No worries. Thanks for the reports.

I don't see why you think the odds were so far against Mike for this set. I am by no means a fan of Mike, but I certainly respect him as a player. He's been playing at a high level for a couple of years now. Hell, he's currently 6th in 2010 BCA points with a chance of making the Mosconi Cup team.. He's certainly taken down his fair share of killers over the last couple of years and he's proven repeatedly that he plays right along with the best of them. So, I look at Shane and his accomplishments as of late. Everyone knows that he's a monster.. Sure, he just crushed Mika in TAR 19.. But, TAR 19 was a challenge match between only two players. Mika got behind, lost his head, and couldn't get back into the match. Just because Shane crushed Mika, doesn't mean he's going to beat everyone he plays after that.. I think Mike had pretty good odds in this match. Shane has to be tired from that long, draining set that he played with Mika.. I actually anticipated Mike winning this set, just based on that fact alone. I truly believe that Mike will place very well in the Open. I wouldn't count Shane out just yet, but I certainly wouldn't bet against Mike to win the whole damn thing..

Just my thoughts..

i meant that the odds of SVB only winning 3 were long odds, not the match itself-I dont count SVB out, you never can he has been winning alot recently and is in good form.

Sometimes people shouldn't be taken literally... re: the 100 to 1 thing.

Eric; I liked your post. It showed a caring heart and that's the thing that counts in this world... the ONLY thing that counts.

A friend of mine asked me to pick one player to win the Open this year and I didn't hesitate and said "I'd pick Shane to win it all". Now, to hear that he lost his first match 11-3 is hard for me to believe. I know it's not impossible for Shane to come back and win the Open, but the odds just jumped up big against him to go through that field on the losers side!

I'm still pulling for Shane, but also i'm still shocked that he lost first round.

James

I'm not playing this years U. S. Open. I'm sitting at home feeling sorry for myself. I will be at Turnig Stone though in December.

Thanks Jim, and everyone for the complements and critisim. I'm going through a tough time right now and for anyone to take their time to comment on me(at this monent) in my life really means alot. Its raining outside in Vegas thats rare, it can go 100 days with out a drop. Smells good.

now back to pool,

sincerly

I've got a quick question - Isn't there any seeding in this event? Why would SVB and Dechaine be matched up in the first round? And have you seen Archers's draw? Second round Dennis Orcollo and if he gets by that, probably Stevie Moore. Why are so many heavy hitters matched up so quickly and with so many second tier players matched up against each other in other brackets?

A great case can be made for seeding.

Even for top notch players it's still a confidence booster to get past someone stronger.

Not the u.s. Open ...but

It wasn't the U.S. Open but back in 1986, there was a tournament in Atlantic City, NJ called 'Last Call for 9 ball'. It was told that Mike Sigel lost his first match and proceeded to win 11 matches in a row and won it against Nick Varner in the finals for a first place prize of $40,000. I forgot how many players entered, but it was over 200. Thats a feat!!

Peace

Here is an article about that very tournament:

If I understand the article correctly, it looks like Sigel lost his third-round match, then won 12 in a row to take the title.

I think I might hold the record for losing my first match and winning tournaments. I've done it seven times with fields of greater than 32 players. I won eleven straight matches in one of them.

i call it LUCK of the draw.i think it was a very tough draw for both players as shane is a monster but mike can play with anyone. look at thorstens, hell he got to play hennesey, thats not a chump match by no means.and for fatboy typing looks very good, must be using SPELL CHECK!!!!

Individual matches between players that are anywhere near the same skill level can always go either way. We are all human (even Shane  ) and have good days as well as bad ones ... and the pool gods do not always treat you fairly.

Next week (or even tomorrow) might bring a complete reversal in outcome for such matches.

I am good friends with both guys, I like them equally and both have season tickets at my house. And both have my highest respect as people not just players. This is bitter sweet for me because of what I just said.

Mike has been comming up strong the past few years, He awalys says "I can feel it in me I have the power to beat anyone", I wish I had that feeling in pool. I had that feeling as a telemarketer so I know what he means, that was the only thing in my life I had that feeling with, some people might never get that feeling I really dont know.

Not to take anything away from Mike, but I think all the travelling finally caught up with Shane, Having a earily match didnt help, 3 tough days with Mika, even though Shane won its lots of work to play Mika, If shane would have got weak in that game Mika could have easly snatched away up until the last 2 hours. Playing Mika is tough action period.

I didnt see the match but I'm very happy for Mike, it was his biggest win yet. I know its not a tournment just a match. But to beat Shane who just won in Nicruga and beat Mika convincenly, SVB seemed un beatable. How could you bet against SVB in that match. then the score 11-3, that's a 100-1 shot for Mike to win that big or to win at all. If he won 11-8 or 11-9 that would have been a good set for Mike, but 11-3 on the TV table day 1, Wow Mike is in the big leagues.

I feel bad for Shane he is going to have to play a pile of matches to win this tournment but I dont count him out. He was tired and had a bad set, he will sleep and go hit some balls, regroup. I know he will do well despite this set back.

this is a awakward post for me to write but I thought I'd share my thoughts, and practice my writig and typing, in the process.

best
eric:)

It probably plays a lot on a guy when you have to jump from the Atlanta Classic to the TAR match with Mika to the US open to wherever Mike was?

Not a slam, just trying to help.
I would recommend you try out Mozilla Firefox browser. It offers the spelling corrections right after you type a word wrong. It underlines the word in red. You then right click on the word to get the correct spelling. It is the nuts.

Mike is going to have a good test of his game in the next match, against Lo Li-Wen, the runner-up in US Open 10-ball.

SVB and Dechaine got along with several other people in that part of the bracket got a ridiculously tough draw. My vote for best draw is Souquet, he's going deep this year, wait doesn't he go deep almost every year.

I don't believe the Open is seeded...and that is just how it should be, IMO.
