Ray...Did you ever see one of Jack White's exhibitions at Roanoke College? Mike used to cover those every year, and wrote several articles about Jack.

Here's a good Mike Ives Pool story, he and Scott Smith were in together and busted this guy for thousands on the bar table, back when Mike had his Chinook Toyota M home. The guy wanted to keep playing and put up his title to his car outside, they beat the guy out of the car, but when they checked the vin #'s, the numbers didn't match the car.:grin-square:

he once told me when we we're playing together in vegas at the valley tourny a number of years ago, that on the way out in arizona somewhere ( he drove from fla because he won't fly) that at about 12 noon he passed a hotel advertised for $18 a night. he almost stopped because he didn't want to pass up that bargain. lol typical mike ives!! hahahaha and jg, he wouldn't mind at all you posting some of his stories or articles on this forum. if he has a problem I'll just threaten to take him skydiving with me!!!

hey jay, I talked to you and john scmidt briefly a couple of years ago at the derby city. you probably don't remember, I have seen you a few times in reno too. as a matter of fact I mentioned cliff joiner owed me a c note and you told me to stand in a very long line!!! lol it's really worth a c note to assure cliff will never ask me for a loan again!!! like insurance!! lol

mike and I we're taking a young friend to college in n.c and we ended up in a room on the way back where we got down with the late red and I can't remember his name ( i know that would help right?) he used to run tournys around the carolinas and was well known old time player? i'm having a brain fart! anyway we agreed to play a 500 set of nine ball with me playing red, then a 500 set of 1 hole with mike playing.
red willis!!! thats it!! well I ended up beating red aa 6 ahead set in like 1 hr, then mike gets up and they play like a race to 4. mike is losing 3-0 and jason and I are at the juke box where we find a song mike can't stand! the end by the doors, I tell jason to play it because mike is down so far and not playing well, he's laughing and refuses, so I play it, you should have seen mikes face when it came on, lol he knew we played it and at first gave us a shitty look, but considering the circumstances finally cracked a smile.
we end up losing that set and break even, then agree to do it again, where we came out on the losing end of both sets this time! red played great against me and mike. all mike kept saying on the way back was " hey pal, I can beat that guy!!) maybe, but not that day. funny when it happened.

I quit playing pool at age 21 until age 47, and I missed a lot of pool and didn't even live in Roanoke during that period but for a few short stints. So I missed a lot Mike Ive's articles and I don't know who Jack White is/was.
What really surprised me was while reading the Winning One Pocket book and the 2nd book I found out that they played some kind of one pocket tournament in Roanoke. Heck, I even saw a whole bunch of Accustat tapes for games played then (94,95?).
Also, .iIf anyone knows, in one of Mike Ives's articles about the closing of the Sportsman in Roanoke, how Sweathead fared against Winnie Beanie in their famous one pocket money match? Also, if any AZers where in Roanoke for these one pocket matches. They must have been played at the Guys and Dolls pool hall, becuase that was the only one in existence then. Maybe the Sportsman was still open - ?
1992 in Chicago, at the Willard's tournament. Up to that point in my life I had only ever put myself into action. Maybe gone partners with someone when they wanted to go in with me on a game but that was about it.
Mike lost to a German guy who was buying cues left and right and had a knot that would choke a horse. Later Rodney Guy busted the whole German National team one by one. I remember it pretty clear bc that 100 represented a big part of my bankroll as I had gone from flush to bust to flush and back to bust again in 6 or 7 days. I eventually sold my Mottey cue to David Hughes from Denver to get money to continue gambling and get a walking stick home to Gainesville.
