Mike Sigel shares "the Key" he learned from Irving Crane in Dallas Texas

."Mr K" for Knowledge really doesn't have much of a ring to it.

I remember when pro players used to call Sigel, Mr N for knowledge. It was a jibe at Sigel's wrongheaded ideas; such as balls can't be thrown with English.

That "N for Knowledge" came from a TV Broadcast when Sigel said {that remark} about himself. It was a mistake, but so funny it caught on and we used to rib him "hey there's Mr. N for Knowledge"......"Mr K" for Knowledge really doesn't have much of a ring to it.;)

Mike likes to use the TOO (touch of outside), especially on new cloth and fast conditions to guard against "skidding". He told me that's the only time he missed balls in straight pool (when he was in punch) is when the ball skidded.

I assure everyone that Mike knows as much about throw, defection and pool in general as anyone that's ever lived. He's been taken out of context a few times, but that happens to every top sports celebrity at one time or another....."words aren't an exact science" - 'The Game is the Teacher'

I agree 100% Living or passed on imo. He was around the absolute best players of pools more glorious years, playing against them etc..., and has since just added on to the knowledge of the game. Having Irving Crane in your hometown growing up probably did not hurt much either

Buddy Hall once described Sigel as, "the man".

Gilbertfan81...Well I just read this entire ridiculous thread, and saw that CJ never answered your question (what a surprise!)...so I will. A mantra is a word or phrase, or series of words or phrases that helps carry you through an action. Mantras are most commonly associated with martial arts and meditation, but we teach players how to create their own pool mantras. Hope that helps...:D

I have heard of players using these CJ . What is a mantra?

BHr...I know you were kinda joking, but it's Deepak Chopra...and actually he just wrote a great book, that the principles behind can be directly applied to pool. The book is called "Enlightenment through the game of golf"!

I like when CJ goes all Deepak Shakur on us.

Send your Ahms, or is that Alms to CJ.

Sure...like the new poolroom you're opening in the DFW area? And don't leave out all the time you spend here posting mostly a lot of gibberish, creating new threads daily, and bumping old ones...nearly 7000 posts in as many months! LOL Where do you find the time? I've been here 12 years, and barely managed to reach 12,000.

My level of play is comparable to anyone, however, there's many players that eat, drink and live pool right now......I give lessons and train other players, it's difficult to imagine having enough time to win a major tournament....although it's certainly possible if I make it a priority in life, and put business opportunities on the shelf in exchange.

Sigel is still grateful to "The Deacon" for his profound mantra.

Yes, I camouflaged it in post #35 for those with "pool eyes that can see" ;)

Irving Crane told Mike this when he was a teenager and Sigel is still grateful to "The Deacon" for his profound mantra.

Yes, the technique Mike Sigel stresses that I believe profound is: "Make Them Earn It!"

At first one might glance over this and think nothing of it....upon closer review one may "real eyes" this is competitive genius (taught to Mike by Irving Crane) 'The Game is the Teacher'

Efren had to change his stroke to compete with the USA Champions

I don't know why CJ said that but you're right. I've seen a lot of pros watch Efren play and practice, but I've never seen Efren watch them. No one ever saw anything like Efren when he came to this country. It's laughable to think Efren would change his game to look more like us.

Efren's stroke has changed quite a bit since 1984 - this is another thing Mike Sigel and I talked about in detail. Efren could not beat Sigel for many years, especially in the finals of major tournaments. Mike pointed out it was because of Efren's wasted motion in his stroke.....he had to "streamline it" to hold up under the pressure of major finals.

Efren had to change his stroke to compete against USA Champions like Buddy Hall, Mike Sigel, Steve Mizerak and Earl Strickland.

Everyone has a right to their opinion, but not their own facts. Ask any champion player that played against Efren in the mid to late 80s and they'll tell you the same thing. I know it because I was really there and "realize with my real eyes the real lies". ;) 'The Game is the Teacher'

SIr, you, of course have a right to your own opinion about me....this is the gift of "free will" and I would never want to see that taken away from you...just make sure to use it wisely and not recklessly (we never know whom may be effected).

Many try to say I have a "hidden agenda" for making these posts and trying to share my experience and knowledge with people that desire to improve.... my agenda is simple, I just like to know someone appreciates my efforts.....that's all there is to it.

Take, for example this email that just came in a few minutes ago from Africa:

Subject: Huge fan of yours!

Message Body:
Hi CJ my name is Gareth and I just wanted to say that I am a huge fan of yours and
have been watching you play for many years!

Is there any way that we could be seeing
you in South Africa anytime soon?

I would love to get an autographed photo of you to
hang up in my bar! Just to remind me of the legend that you are! I will even pay to
have it shipped!

I watched the classic mosconi 96 vids the other day and really
still regard that as my all time favourite as you were captain of such a classy
bunch of players!

Hope all is well on your side and that you make the next mosconi
cup! World class player who made me yield a cue!

Thanks for spending a little time
and reading this! All the best. Kindest regards Gareth Wilkinson

I will send Gareth an autographed poster, a free DVD package - What do I get out of the deal? Well, I hope it gets a smile and helps out a fellow pool lover appreciate the Game that's taught me so much about Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. - All I can do is try to make a positive difference no matter what the consequences.

...or even "affected"...which was the word you meant to use. Nice email! I've gotten those from Africa as well, and also responded with free dvds, etc. (other countries too!). You should have said, what I did..."send me a roundtrip plane ticket, and I'll be there forthwith!" LOL

You're certainly charming, and I'm sure you have made a plethora of videos.

You're certainly charming, and I'm sure you have made a plethora of videos.

"Affect", in the example you've given, means to influence or produce an effect on something. In normal usage it is always a verb; it has a noun meaning only as a term used in psychology.

In contrast, "effect" is most often used as a noun. It means the result of an action.

It is easy to see why confusion can arise: when an action affects something, it produces an effect. When wondering which to use, remember that "affect", in normal usage, is always a verb. "Effect" can be a noun or a verb but is usually a noun. As a verb, it means to bring about or accomplish something, as in:

We've effected the design changes as requested. (we've made the changes)
In recent years, the government has effected major improvements to the health care system. (the improvements were successfully implemented)

It is "effect" -- not "affect" -- that frequently appears in compound nouns, prepositional phrases, and phrasal verbs. Examples:

personal effects
special effects
Doppler effect
greenhouse effect
come into effect
bring into effect
for effect
give effect to
in effect
take effect
to the effect that
to that effect

No, the 31 Degrees thing was not what helped me, that was a joke. He did help with something though and I won a tournament last night at Rustys in Ft. Worth without missing any balls or making any position errors.

I said Mike could run 300 balls any day he put his mind to it.....and he can.

My level of play is comparable to anyone, however, there's many players that eat, drink and live pool right now......I give lessons and train other players, it's difficult to imagine having enough time to win a major tournament....although it's certainly possible if I make it a priority in life, and put business opportunities on the shelf in exchange.

Comparable to anyone ? I love your confidence

Corrrect...as in your statement "whom you affect". Lovely video CJ...were you able to dig that tired old video up all by yourself (interesting that the video cuts off just as I'm pocketing the game ball)? LOL...and now you want to try to debate correct grammar with me? That's funny! You should always be careful about using the the terms "always" and "never". Nothing is always or never. :D How come you didn't post a link to my 'other' videos?
