don't know where the earlier threads on this are. anyway, APA has announced the Mike Sigel vs. Loree Jon Jones match on their webpage:

http://www.poolplayers.com/siglevjonesvegas.html

Billiard icons and former world champions Mike Sigel and Loree Jon Jones will square-off against each other Sat., Aug. 20 in Las Vegas in a $100,000 8-Ball match. They will play a best 2 out of 3 sets, with each set being a Race to 9 games. The winner will receive $100,000 cash with the Runner-up taking home $50,000. *This event is not part of the APA National Team Championships, and is not sanctioned or sponsored by the APA.

The website for The International Pool Tour had a survey running to see who people thought would win the event. The last time I looked it was running with at Sigel 80% to Jones 20%. I look today and it's at Sigel 51% and Jones at 49%.

Wow, what happened. Did a bunch of Jones supporters vote and erase cookies and vote again over and over. Or is this some sort of IPT conspiracy?

I thought it was a bit suspicious.

Challange Match

I see Mike winning because it is 8ball he may not dominate.
It will depend on the spread off the break.

I see him winning.

What do you think? I don't think they'll put on their site that match is going to be lop sided. I also can't believe 32,800 people voted. That's got to be a record for a pool poll.

It might be big but it would have been HUGE if they had invited Jean Balukas. Mike might have second thoughts about that though.

I know, he would still be the favorite.

I'd love to see Jean Balukas v Allison Fisher.

Me, too, roughly 1,000 times more than I'd like to see Jones vs Sigel.

Actually I never looked at the current number of votes. The last time I looked, when it was Sigel at 80%, the total number of votes was less than 500. This was less than a week ago.

I voted for Loree Jon 13,462 times. Is that ok?

SJM...you ever have an opportunity to watch her play and see how she shoots now? What is her primary game these days?

Yes, I've watched Jean play and played against her numerous times over the past three years or so. Jean only plays occasionally, almost exclusively in the nine ball event held in her father's room in Brooklyn. My guess is that if she practiced every day for a month and then joined the WPBA, she'd be a favorite over everyone but Allison and Karen. Jean still plays, what I'd call, A+ level pool.

It doesn't actually, because King was playing at her very highest level back then. What we have here is two over-the-hill-has-beens, with Jones last winning a WPBA title in 1996 and Sigel not having even competed since then.

Fisher (or Corr) vs Sigel, that would have been like Billie Jean King vs Bobby Riggs, as it would have been a top woman in her prime against an old-time legend.

I'm glad for both of them, pleased to see that they'll both earn a nice paycheck, but I see this as more of a legends matchup than a serious game of pool.

Calling this the World Eight Ball Championship is comical, if not deplorable. If they were playing racquetball, would one of them become world racquetball champion? Calling an event a world championship doesn't make it a world championship, now does it?

I'm hopeful that these proven champions put on a good show and help their sport, and wish them both the best of luck.

You are right, SJM. The difference is this is marketing at it's best. If, no when, Mike beats Loree, everyone will say the same thing you just did. Then you have the, Sigel v Fisher/Corr, match which will generate even more interest and $$$. Absolutely nothing wrong with this either. This has the potential of pumping up the money high enough that you end up with an Efren, or similar, v Fisher/Corr for a TON of money. All great marketing.

Nice post, Hemi. Let's hope it works out just that way.

thats all ... just 1000 times

I would be closer to at least 6 digits.
Funny thing is that I will be going to Vegas that very day.
Now I have to figure out if I would like to see the feeding of the lion.

I will say that if its close or that Jones wins it will be rigged. Period

We need someone like Earl to play her and then turn him loose in the media about it. That would cause a ruckus and might get a few more matches
lined up.

Do you also realize that LLJ has retired from the WPBA and that the promoter will not have to pay any WPBA sanction fees for her to play?

Never mind Earl vs Jones = bloodbath. Earl vs. Fisher is a great tv. What the thing needs is a no bullshit spot which puts the match in jeoperdy.

8-Ball
Alternate Break
Gals get to remove one problem ball after selection of strips/solids

Earl...possibly behind a couple of games to a women for big money = great match
