Just curious what the audience thinks here. This thread is in no way related to the controversy in their last match - I'm just curious to know how people view these two players.

If Mike Sigel played Mika Immonen 10 games to 150 points, who would win? What would the score be (in games). Any guesses on the total ball score between them?

Don't make this a continuation of the discussion in the other thread. Only about their abilities as players.

I hope the mods don't move this to the sub-forum since the Worlds are going on right now.

P.S. It might have been better to say race to 1000 pts. Either way, you get the picture.

First!!!!!!!!!!!

This match might start, but it would never finish. Someone's ego would eventually get bent out of shape and then someone would then walk off or make a stink.
One game i can see happening, but not 10. There's not enough Kleenex in the world for a match like that

Right now I'd give Sigel a slight edge over Mika. In Sigel's prime however, it wouldn't even be close, Sigel would beat Mika something like 1000-600.

I would have to pick Mike over Mika, due to his experience and skill at Straight Pool and the fact that, by all accounts, he is playing pretty damn good at present.

This. Sigel would be a big favorite in his prime against Mika, which is the fair comparison.

I agree, Bobby. In fact, I think Sigel (now) is more than a slight fav. I posted a few other times I recently played with him and he didn't miss a ball in 3 hours (literally) playing 14.1. That, paired with his recent stunt at that event where he won (who knows) how many games without a game won against him. He won his IPT match against Schmidt and I think Schmidt is a superior player to Mika in 14.1, and Mike says he's playing "way better" now than he did then.

Anyways, people often quickly forget how GOOD someone like Sigel plays when they're not in the spotlight anymore....especially at 14.1. When the announcer said that Sigel should feel privileged to beat Mika - my eyebrows shot up since I think Mika is the underdog for sure in 14.1.

Anyways, it'll be interesting to see how the poll turns out.

I didn't realize Sigel was playing that well these days, I've only seen him play a little bit in the past few years so I couldn't really get an accurate judgement on his current speed.

You know everyone now talks about Hohmann or Schmidt being the two players with the best chance of beating Mosconi's 526, but I always thought Sigel at his best was going to be the one to do it. In fact I'm shocked he's never ran over 400. The way he played in his prime I would have guessed his high run was somewhere near 500 balls. It's funny how most people forget how dominant he was.

if it was in his prime or now mika whont like it any mike sigel would win

Tobad theres not many recorded matchs of mike Sigel in his prime Tsk Tsk

The old guy never stands a chance in these things.

You might be right. I'd love to see a TAR match-up with these two. I think Mika is a great guy and a SUPER player, by the way. I have the highest respect for him. I guess I'm shy to call Mike an underdog to nearly anyone at 14.1 when he's pumped-up and saying he's playing as good as he ever did.

Straight pool is a knowledge game.. 9/10 ball is more of a stroke game..

Mike is a former World champion..with 30+ years experience against the like of Mizerak and Martin.

this might be Mikas first straight pool tourney..

Sigel by a landslide IMO

Ok for the ones that didn't see it last night Mike and Mika is on the PPV now it's a re-run so every one that has the PPV can see the shot that every one is discussing.

if mike played like he 20 years ago, Mike is by fara better 14.1 player, look at his patterns.

Mika pockets balls much better than mike nowdays, age sucks. and mika has more stanamia than mike because he is younger. Thats why Mika is the favorite if that game goes down in 2011, in 1986 Mika wouldnt like it at all.

In rotation games Mika is the superior player.

have you ever seen mika win 28 straight games in a row 4 matchs 7-0 in 9ball or 10ball i havent seen anyone do that mike has done it recently right when he came out of retirement thats strong mika is a great player my hats down too him an way younger but how can u beat 40 years Experience an mike is still at the top of his game

The old man can still hit'em straight I wouldn't count him out yet. It's actually sickening to watch him play, because his pattern play is good as anyone's. Mike can still play. He just play's flawless. But can't take anything from Mika as well he play's as good as anyone as also.

he still folded down the stretch of that tournament.

What about Johnny?

I think that Mika wins this more often than not, if racing to 100. If race to 1,000, I don't think Mike Sigel has a chance. However, the closer race would be with Johnny Archer...that guy is playing some awesome straight pool.

Lets get one thing straight.
I am not knocking on Sigel's talent. The man is a champion. No doubt about that.

But...

It's not like Mike RAN all those games in a row.
He made some great outs, he missed some, and he got some rolls.
But his opponents failing to score against him, and falling apart, had nothing to do with his talent. It had to do with their inability to perform.

Did his legendary status have something to do with it? Probably.
Did the tension in the room have something to do with it? Probably.
Did the HYPE have something to do with it? Probably.

But believe me, it didn't all have to do with the mans skill at the table.

YET, people cite this accomplishment as some holy grail of accomplishments, when it really wasn't that spectacular.

Archer's 13 racks in a row. Yeah, THAT'S an accomplishment.

But winning a bunch of games in a row because someone else failed to perform during their inning? PULEEZ!!!

Once someone decided to fire back at him, he folded.

Hmm...so you think his legendary status has nothing to do with his talent?
