Mikey at the Bat

The outlook wasn't brilliant for Team USA that day,
The score stood seven and nine with but one more round to play,
And then when Nikos choked up first, and Niels soon did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go, down in deep despair. The rest
Clung to the hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
"If only Mikey could but get a turn” their champion of fable,
We'd put up even money now, with Mikey at the table."

But Johnny preceded Mikey, as did also Brandon Shuff,
While the former was a champion, the latter had not enough;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy lay,
For there seemed little chance Mikey would get to play.

But Dennis let the shaft out, to the wonderment of all,
Hatch, despised in Europe, made every single ball;
And when the dust had lifted, and men saw what had occurred,
Johnny roared in the second, while Shane drilled Daz the third!

Then from five thousand throats, there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
It pounded on the mountain and echoed like a roar,
For Mikey, mighty Mikey, was advancing through the door.

There was ease in Mikey’s manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Mikey’s bearing and a smile lit Mikey’s face.
When, responding to the cheers,massive forearms tipped his cue,
No stranger in the crowd would doubt that Mikey would come through..

Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt ,
Five thousand men applauded when he wiped them on Nick’s shirt.
Then while the lanky Dutchman won the lag for the first break,
Mikey raised his bushy eyebrows and ordered up a steak.

While the resin-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
Mikey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy cueman, the ball unpotted sped —
"Ain't my style," said Mikey. "Game to Nick!" the ref then said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore;
"Kill him! Kill the ref" shouted someone on the stand;
And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Mikey raised his hand.

With a smile of Christian charity great Mikey’s visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
He signaled to the player, and once more the spheres flew;
But Mikey hung another and the umpire said, "Yer down two!"

Nick while on the Hill but hooked, elected to push out,
But one scornful look from Mikey caused the audience to shout,
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
The knew Mikey would shoot and just run out the frame!

The sneer is gone from Mikey’s lip, his teeth are clenched in hate,
He pounds with cruel violence his cue upon the slate;
Nick has pushed out to a combo and now all will know,
As the London air is shattered by the force of Mikey's blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout,
But There is no joy in Waterville Maine — for Mighty Mikey has struck out.

Instant classic lol

Joking aside, poor kid, I really felt for him. He did not play his best but he'll be back. He also showed a lot of good sportsmanship too - I admire him for that.

I rushed home from work
To see what how things stood
And just as I thought,things were not good
As I read through the forums
I instantly felt sad
Our mighty team had just been had
Archer shot straight, and kept his cool
But those dam Europeans acted like fools
From the beer in their veins and a little lack of class
They never once considered not showing their a$$
Although it was fun and to them a riot
We can only hope they will learn to be quiet

Revisionist history here. Dennis played horribly today, but a few rolls and a shaky opponent allowed him to win despite extremely poor play. He probably made as many errors today as Dechaine.

In truth, both Mike and Dennis had terrible weeks, but I'm still a believer in both.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
Mike caught in the lights like a defenseless reindeer.

Mike, no doubt, felt the pressure, but he deserved to be there. I think we've all had pressure get the better of us. It's a team event and we lost as a team.

Good post and nice poem.
I never expected Mike or Brandon to go in there and play there best....I felt all along this is a building year. I for one am glad these two young men got to represent our country and hope that they are there again next year!

Win lose or draw I am proud of them.

After all they are both in our family:cool:.

And Ma in her latex and I in my cap
Had just settled down to a nice piece of a$$
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I quit dogging my wife to see what was the matter

Ok, wait, wait, I have to think up some pool stuff.

Well I must say, this was a great poem to be
Filled with witty lines, even described the crowd shark-ing
I have one question though, and that is to see
Why do first posters in a thread, quote the O-P?

Those that liked Mike before, will still like him now regardless of how many shots he dogged. Those that didn't, won't.

The Hatch fans will still be Hatch fans regardless of his behavior or play

The doubters will doubt and the haters will hate

The Earl contingent will firmly believe he would have led the US to the promised land

After 4 days, much to my disappointment, the Euro team out played team USA and won. Better shot making execution, better position play, better score... That's kind of how it works

I think JCIN summed it up best, it is a fun time and a good show but not exactly the enviornment to be much more than that.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
Mike caught in the lights like a defenseless reindeer.

Corvette did post his thoughtful prose, awaited I to see,
His utube link disguised so well, to sucker 'n Rick Roll me!

Poetic license!

I actually only saw the end of the Shuff match and Dechaine match.

Terry Blue Hog Rider, was chomping at the bit,
To boast of his forway with Mrs. Hog who claims he's full of it.
You see Mrs. Blue Hog Rider is not a pool hall slouch,
She reads AZ daily, so Terry's sleeping on the couch!

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Congrats to the Europeans,
May next year they play like poo!
