I originally
read this thread about a few weeks back and decided to try it out myself. I have a wood shop, so I have the tools necessary to make my own jig for the compression. I spoke with my cue maker before making them and he recommended buttermilk. Milk is very thin compared to buttermilk which is nice and soupy almost like mushroom soup. It coats the tips really well and seems to absorb nicely.
I have experimented with these tips on two of my playing shafts all the while using Elk Master and Triangle, Wizard, Super Pro, Triumph, and WB tips. I change my tips by hand right there in the pool hall and it takes me no more than 10 minutes.
I have found that Compressed Buttermilk soaked tips grab the cue ball a great deal more than Triangles and most any other tip I've used. They seem to hold chalk extremely well, and don't mushroom as quickly because they are already compressed a great deal. I feel fortunate to have found this thread and the recipes that are linked.
I have stirred quite a buzz in my pool hall because of it. IMO, layered tips are a joke. I much prefer single layer traditional tips, and now that I have found BM tips, I am good to go.
Thanks to AZ, I have learned a great deal and have shared some very interesting things. I feel very fortunate to belong and bond with such a unique group of brothers.
