Million Dollar 9 ball

I just came across some information about Allan Hopkins Million dollar 9 ball tournament last year and could not beleive the lack of participation in this event.
Can anyone tell me why all the pro's didn't get in and also all the wanna be pro's or all the Hustlers out there that want the big dough.

Yes it was but doesn't any of the great players have 5000 to put up to win a million? That shows me that they don't have the confidence in their game. I guess this sport will never get to where other sports are with players making millions and look at card games they even play for millions. Sad state for Billiards.

Do you think that money was guaranteed? I don't know, I personally know pro players that had to wait almost a year to get tournament winnings a few years back. I'm not saying it was this crew that is running this tourney.
 
I honestly don't think it was $5000. You see pros gamble for that all the time. The issue was the fact that the other pros didn't think they could win against the likes of Corey, Dennis Orcullo, Bustamante, Archer, etc, given the nature of the format. If they thought they could win, they weren't $5000-sure they could win. It's like poker and you go all-in... the other guys knew their hand wouldn't hold up long-haul so why bet it.

Poker has money in it because on any givin day I can beat Phil Ivey. Never in a million sets could I beat Shane in a race to anything over 2.

You guys are all wrong...Poker has $1,000,000.00 payout because of their main sponsor and product...POKER SHOES LTD.

Pool will have its first Million Dollar Tournament as soon as we sell $20 Mil in POOL SHOES and they sponsor the tourney! They just haven't caught on yet! :eek:
 
There was also an option for qualifiers but I don't think anybody took an intrest in holding any. Hopkins left the success of this up to the players and the billiards industry. He also never lied or made unkeepable promises. What the lack of participation shows is #1- pool players are cheap, #2- pool players need to be led around by the hand, #3- most pool players have a lack of confidence in their own games. The players that did enter are among the best. They and perhaps a handful more are the best mens players around and this lack of participation proves it to me, the other mens players had no confidence in their own ability. JMHO
 
I think the biggest problem was $1,000,000. Too many sat back with (million bucks, right!) attitude. $100,000 would have been good, then $150,000, $200,000... All of the events in the U.S probably only add to $1,000,000. After everyone getting burnt and then waving that amount, it was doomed to fail.
 
What people are failing to realize, is that the $1,000,000 was based on 200 players putting in $5K each. That's where the million was going to come from. Secondly, even though there was a 'qualifier' process, the qualifier entries were high enough (with no payback to the winner, other than entry into the big show), that most players weren't interested. Poolplayers at that level aren't cheap...they are mostly BROKE! Stakehorses did not want to post $5K, on the tiny chance of winning back a lot more. Most everybody (in that circle) knew that the turnout would be small the first year, and weren't willing to bet on it. It's only a month until the next event is supposed to happen, but I haven't heard one word about it...so I'm guessing it is not happening a second time. Too bad...the idea was sound. This is all, jmo, of course.:D

Exactly, in reality is was not a $1,000,000 at all and it was very clear it was never going to be. If it had been assured that the prize pool would be $1,000,000 then they would have gotten alot more players from around the globe but it was not a 1 million dollar event, it was a "$5,000 X the number of players we get" event with a misleading name.
