min spindle speed for cutting points

what min spindle speed would be required for cutting points? Could I get away with 2k if the cutter is 1 7/8 or 2 1/4? I suppose I could raise the HZ with a vfd as well. All opinions welcome.

Two things are going to help you.
The diameter of the cutter and the number of 'teeth' on the cutter.
For instance, if you had a two tooth cutter spinning at 2K and were able to cut with a given feed rate, then replaced that cutter with say, a 6 tooth cutter of the same diameter, you could cut your RPMs by 2/3 and still get the same cut. Conversely, run the 6 tooth at 2K and it would cut as the 2 tooth would at 6K.
Your feed rate will have a lot to do with it also. Finish of cut will be a concern.
Hope this helps.

thank you for the replies. I am asking due to an older lagun that is available for about 2k and I don't think it turns faster than 2k. He said it is an ftv-1 with belts, not the variable.

According to this offering, the FTV-1 is a variable speed.
It uses a 'belt' that runs btwn variable diameter sheaves.

Anyway, even if the one you're looking at is strictly step-pulley belt drive, I'd think your RPMs would be at least near the 4,000 range. That's more than plenty for what you want to do. I've got a 3hp MillPort, belt drive and that will spin 5,400 Rs but that has a 2 speed motor on it. A .030" slot in a billet is no problem.

Many of the tool shops that I've worked in had Lagun mills and I've always thought them to be a pretty decent machine. I'd say that for the money, it's a good deal. Not trying to tell you how to evaluate machinery but in this case, check the tolerance of the lead-screws. DROs will help to overcome a lot of that.

Unless that machine is really new and comes with DRO and auto feed, I'm going to suggest that you could do better on price. If you watch the used machinery auctions, I'm positive that you can find a Bridgeport in your, or a neighboring state and get it for $900 - $1,200. Many auctions are selling a half a dozen of these that end up in that price range.

RPM=CSx4/Diameter of the rotating piece, in this case the cutter. Cutting speed of the wood I would estimate at somewhere around 1200 sfm x 4 = 4800. 4800/1.875=2560.
Im guessing at the cutting speed though, I was a machinist not a woodworker.

got one

I bid and one a Sharp HMV on Ebay. It is an older unit with straight support under knee, but the ways on the y axis looked great. It had servo power feeds on both x and y, 9x42 bed, Kurt powerlock, and an anilam 3 2 axis DRO. Purchase price was 981.00 plus tax. It can spin up to 4200 rpm

Now to buy a clamp and another VFD....

And rent a trailer and forktruck...

I might even ask for help moving this one....it weighs in at 2300 lbs..

Thank you all for your help...

I have an older bridgeport dro x and y power feed like new completel rebuilt it would be a pickup only in michigan we can load it $5000 some tooling comes will it extremly well taken care of one owner machine
