Mineral lines on OB-1 shafts

Quality control

Thanks for clearing that up. So, quality control will now be allowed to go out the window because I should learn to not focus on that little mark going in and out of my closed bridge. My apologies for bringing it up. Pardon me if I expect good quality work for 2 days pay. My bad.

It seems to me "quality control" was when you picked it and paid for it. Now that you don't like it, maybe whining about it will get you some relief.

I screened all the shafts the dealer I went to had in stock. Some of them had taper rolls. The other possible candidate had one of these mineral marks right near the ferrule. To drive to the next nearest dealer would be over an hour's drive. I looked at every shaft they had in stock, including the ones that weren't the right thread type. There was one Uni-loc that was near flawless, but my cue is a 5/16-14 thread.

Why did I choose this shaft? I was playing in a tournament on the weekend, and also had some action set up as well for this weekend. I was borrowing a friend's OB-1 the past 3 weeks, and he needed it back. I decided to take the plunge and buy one. I refuse to order any more product online, as they typically ship all their crap up to Canada, because they know it will cost too much in shipping plus brokerage to ship the crap back for exchange or refund. Anyways, of my choices, I picked the best of what was presented to me. I was just shocked at the number of shafts, near 70% of what was in stock, that had these "beauty" marks. I'd rather rotate the shaft due to one mark rather than finding the clean spot due to 3 spots. It's not that I picked out the one with the most annoying mark. I was just voicing an opinion that a vast majority of the OB-1s I have seen up here (Canada) seem to have mineral markings. When this happened to Predator, they marked them as seconds.

I understand your problem but still recommend getting in touch with Royce. ...and I would not buy anytime again from that dealer! It was him he should have sent these shafts back to OB Cues at the first place OR give a discount on these. At least 25%.

I just dove back into playing with low deflection shafts, and decided to give an OB-1 a try. I borrowed my friend's shaft, and played a few weeks with it. I noticed a definite improvement in my game. Anyways, I decided to buy one myself, and went to the local rep for OB-1. I picked through the 6 shafts they had in stock, and found the straightest, cleanest shaft I could. I was shocked at the number of dark mineral spots in these shafts. I don't need my shafts to be snow white, but a dark spot definitely bothers me during my stroke. Perhaps there should be tighter quality control at OB-1. If I'm shelling out $220 for a shaft, I do not think there is any place for dark mineral lines in the shaft. Save those for the sub $100 shafts, or start labelling these shafts as factory 2nd and knock some $$ of the price of the shaft. Just a pet peeve. I was playing in a tournament with the new shaft yesterday and had to keep rotating the cue to avoid the dark spots.

Yea I have the same thing with one of my OB-1 shafts, the other one does not! I don't mind it though cause it identifies the two shafts for me! LOL

They don't bother me though cause when I am actually stroking the cue I am not looking at the dark spots! I am more focused on my object ball and the cue ball! LOL

get ob-2- use this for break shaft

I would send it to Royce- pay shipping and ask him to replace it with the ob-2. Send proof of purchase. all that jazz. If it really does affect play-pool is a mental game. Mcdermott- I 've bought many seconds and they do have minor imperfections. I will tell you this I have fronts that are brown and white and they are (the better wood over white AAA+) mark

I have to agree with the second half of this post. It sounds more like the dealer is getting seconds and passing them off for full price. If this was the best of 6, then if it were me, I would have passed. I knownly wouldn't pay that kind of money for a visual defect like that. Sometimes you have to 'beat' up the dealer for a better deal when there are inperfections like that. Contact Royce, and give him the dealer's name, I bet he'll help you out, and that dealer will #1) not sell seconds for full price again, or 2) won't be a dealer for OB anymore.
Good luck and pass on the results.

Don't be letting the cat out the bag that the beautiful white wood isn't as good as the darker wood. You are right of course but . . .

If there is anything on the shaft that catches your eye when you are stroking a shot, that shaft is a reject. Period. It doesn't matter whether or not it should or shouldn't distract you, it does. The shaft can be white, brown. or any color as long as it is uniform and invisible to the shooter.

Shouldn't ferrules be all white or opaque as well?
I just have to wonder how that sugar can bother one more than the two-tone ferrule

much more worser than that

Joey,

Even much more worser dan da two-tone ferule, Royce and dem boys can't line up da ferule stock straight when dey be mak'n ferules. All of dem layers done run off'm one side. I don' see how anyone can possibly shoot wit one o' dem shafts. If de shaft is straight the ferule is crookedid. If you line up da ferule rings den da cue butt wanna hit ya right in da gut. I tink da firs' ting ta do if ya done bought one of dem curly-cue shafts is ta spray bombid dat ferule white like God and Gus meant dem ta be!
