Mobile App to diagram pool shots

What made the CueTable diagram program so awesome was its dialog capabilities. We could download, edit and repost diagrams. Unfortunately, Pool Table Memo is no where near as robust as CueTable is. The diagrams are simply turned into screenshots. You can't edit them once they're posted to a forum and forget about 3D capabilities and angle calculations. With Wei, you truly felt pool diagramming was reaching levels only a computer could handle. Now, we are back to a sophisticated napkin with Pool Table Memo which is really all it is.

Wei has offered his product to us for free all this time even though the improvements he's made over the years have taken countless hours. I want to continue supporting him. I think we owe it to him. I hope he can somehow convert his product for iPhone/iPad use and promise to purchase this app once available. I say this because I think we already owe him and because I am 100% certain he will forever have a superior product to anything else out there.

I agree. If he were to make an iphone app, I would buy it.

I would love to be able to take a picture of a table and it automaticly maps the layout on a diagram. That would be awesome.

The diagram thing...

Not on topic exactly... but it looks like cue table diagramming is still possible. I think AZB (and maybe also wei) need to jump in to make it fully work again.

When you make a diagram, it's being made in shockwave, so you need an up to date version of that. Then you can click the URL button to access it any time. In firefox, this link works for anyone... both the creator and other people can click it, or copy and paste it, and their browser will show the layout. The links look something like this: http://pool.bz/P/?@3CAqy@

However, if you are not logged in automatically on Wei's site, with your name and password saved, you don't get the pool table diagram. You simply get redirected to their front page.

Beyond that, AZB has a custom UBB tag, [weí][/weí], and this tag is designed to allow the user to post an embedded shockwave object. Over the years, this has been flaky for me, sometimes you get the little shockwave icon with a loading bar, the bar starts up and loads, say, 5% or even 20%, but then hangs. In the past, I've fixed this by updating shockwave... and if that didn't work, carefully uninstalling and reinstalling it. But that's a pain in the ass. This may not work anymore.

So, the short version:

1. Make sure you have latest shockwave, possibly uninstall your current version if you wanna be thorough.

2. Make an account on pool.bz, log in with it, and check the box for save password.

3. Make a diagram and click the "URL" button, and you can probably at least paste that url on AZB so others can click it and see what you wanted, and even edit it (after editing they would copy the new url, and paste it as a reply).

It'd be nice if they could show the table right in the post, but the technical guys on AZB will have to look into that. Some new way of embedding the wei table... I dunno if it's an <object> or an <iframe> or what. If wei's done working with it, he should sell it to someone.

Excellent App

I'd like to know how you like it, or anyone who uses it for that matter.

I paid the 3.99 and think it has everything you could want. I especially like pressing one button and getting a snapshot of the table I can send to anyone. Little difficult to grab and move a ball already placed on the table with my fat fingers, but I'm getting used to it.

I think this app meets the goal.

i am not currently a s/w developer, but i spent most of my working life (25 years+) as one, coding in 5 languages and starting a s/w company that did very well, selling product in 40+ countries.

a crowd-sourced spec is any coder's worst nightmare. proven many times over to be the worst way to tackle a project, like getting a committee to write a novel.

it's great idea to fund it here. just find a developer who knows the game and really wants to do it, and then don't try to manage it either yourself or by committee.

A camel is a horse designed by committee.

I did this... uninstalled shockwave, reinstalled latest version, and created account at pool.bz, that stays logged in. I can make the table, but I can't post it here on AZ, even using the special tags AZ and Wei came up with years ago.

Layout Memo iPhone App:
I spent about 10 minutes with it and gave up. The balls were easy enough to position, but I couldn't figure out how to draw the lines. There is no instruction or help file that I could find. You can also place balls on top of each other... in other words, it doesn't know that the balls are "solid".

Jude, you make some excellent points. After reading your post, I was too quick to disregard Wei. You are right, I doubt anyone else would ever accomplish what he has. To get the best products in our game requires a special mix. They have to be designed by someone who is a pool junkie, AND who has a very high skill level in the area of interest, be it software, tables, cues, equipment, etc.

I wish we can get Wei to continue his work, and port it over to the mobile platform, and also fix it so it works on the PC/Mac platforms.

I'm no expert, but I think if Wei were somehow able to rewrite his programs in HTML5, they would work on any browser, be it Mac/PC, iOS, or Android. And we'd get away from the Shockwave program entirely, that was a drain on computing power, and made browsing the forums difficult at times.

Hi All,

I've recently wrote and published an iOS app for drawing a pool shot. It's called DrawShot and is currently available on the iOS App Store. You can save up to five different drawings absolutely free and it's only a few bucks to upgrade to unlimited saving. (Note: there is still unlimited editing and exporting in the free version, and you can always just delete one of your five saved drawings to make room for a new one.)

I've attached an example image that I drew using DrawShot. Let me know what you think.

Cheers,
Larry

I just downloaded the app and purchased the Pro version. Very nice tool. I just started using it so I'm still learning but is there any way to send a diagram others can edit? Is there a desktop version of the diagram or is it only for iOS?

FYI I posted an HTML5 alternative to wei table some weeks ago, here is the link to it:

http://www.billiardsthegame.com/btgtable/

It basically copies a snapshot of the layout and gives you a snippet to cut/paste into the forum.

I would not bill it as a "mobile" app, but it does work on iPad decently.

I just downloaded the free app on my iPhone 5. I found it a little difficult to draw the cueball's path (cut the 5 ball into the corner, bounce off the rail to the middle of the table). Is there a two-image limit for the CB ghost? I couldn't get it to image the CB in the middle of the table.

One problem for this fat-fingered player is that it's difficult to see the table when I'm using two fingers to move a ball.

I'll play with it some more later and get back to you.

Every time you release your finger and then put your finger back on the screen it makes a new ghost ball. Also, you don't have to have your finger over the ball you are moving. That make it really easy to see what you are doing. There is a built in help at the bottom of the screen with the question mark. Hit it, and it goes through about 6 simple screens showing you how to move the balls.

I downloaded it, and it works fairly well. The table is not a 9' table though. I sent feedback to the developer.

I also couldn't figure out how to upgrade it to the paid version, or what the difference was. Seems like it need a bit more polish, but its close.

I will say this seemed to be the easiest to use of the Wei and other apps over the years, in simply drawing the balls. Very responsive. I figured out how to move the balls and draw lines in just a few minutes, and now its super easy. With the Wei, I felt it was too complicated, and never could figure out what to click for a new line, etc.

I think the User Interface needs a bit of improvement. THe buttons on the side are small. Maybe there is one button on the side, that when clicks magnifies all the drawing options.

I also think it needs a toggle grid option to stay on the grid.

And for it to be a community tool, it needs to be editable in forums like the Wei table is, and the one Mohrt is working on.

Hi Jude,

Thanks for the support, I'm glad you like it so far!

Currently there isn't a way to send an editable diagram, but what you _can_ currently do is send a photo of the drawing via Email, Facebook or Twitter (without leaving the app.) You can also save a photo of the drawing to your camera roll and import it into other apps.

As you've already seen, you can save multiple drawings on your phone and edit them later. Importing/exporting an editable drawing will be coming soon in a future version.

As far as a desktop version goes, it's possible I would port this to the Mac but probably not Windows or Android unless it surpassed all expectations and became wildly popular within the pool community.

Hi bdorman,

There is no limit on the number of ghost balls that can be created. In order to create a ghost ball, just tap on any ball (or ghost ball) to select it and then drag with two fingers. You'll know which ball is selected because it will have a yellow circle around it. When a new ghost ball is created, it becomes selected automatically so you can start dragging with one finger to move it or let up and then drag with two fingers again to create another new ghost ball.

I also have fat fingers so I made it where you can place your finger(s) anywhere on the slate when dragging so that your finger doesn't need to be over the ball that you're trying to place.

Just make sure you select a ball with the yellow circle (by tapping it) and then you can move it by dragging one finger or create a ghost ball by dragging two fingers, anywhere on the slate. There's a little tutorial if you tap the (?) question mark tool while making a drawing. (I'd like feedback on the tutorial if you have any.)

Let me know if you have any other questions or suggestions.

Cheers,
Larry

Thanks for the feedback! (I got your feedback email.) I'm going to look into the sizing issues that you outlined. I'm planning to add an option for a few different table sizes, at least 9' and barbox.

I also couldn't figure out how to upgrade it to the paid version, or what the difference was. Seems like it need a bit more polish, but its close.

The only difference is that in the free version you can't have more than five editable drawings saved at one time. When you hit the + on the first screen to create a new drawing, if you already have five drawings saved it will prompt you to purchase the upgrade. You can then either buy the upgrade, or just go back and delete one of the five you already have saved and then you'll be able to create a new one. (Note: you can also delete any/all of the four example drawings/drills that it comes with.)

Cheers,
Larry

On Android Devices the App you want is called Shot Pad. Its a mini version of the Wei Table. You can Diagram your shots and layout then save a version to your phone for later review.
