Mobile App to diagram pool shots

The WEI/Cuetable has been non-functional for several years now, and it seems attempts to contact its creator, Wei, have been unsuccessful.

Even if the Wei/Cuetable table was still working, it was written to work on Macromedia Shockwave technology. This technology does not work on iOS mobile devices (iPhone, iPod, iPad), and with a high degree of certainty probably never will.

I believe that a mobile layout app will be much more useful than a PC based app, such as Wei/Cuetable was. Imagine being able to pull up on your phone a forum thread with a shot situation, so that you could practice it right at the pool hall? Or, diagramming a situation presently in front of you that is giving you trouble and posting it right from the table at the pool hall?

How can we develop this mobile app? Can we have a community effort to do it? I don't know a thing about programming, but perhaps others here do?

In my opinion, the app should be community supported. Either we all raise money to pay someone to write it (and maintain it), or programmers within our community write it.

I'd rather not have it under one entity, like the Wei/Cuetable was, as we all saw what happened with that.

We can get into feature requests, layout, etc., later. (One big one I feel we should strive for is the ability to take a picture, since every single smart phone has a camera, and automatically transfer that into a diagram).

For now, is this community supported idea possible? Do we have programmers here who can do this? Any thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea. I would like to copy a table layout to see if I could duplicate the shot selection. This is a great way to practice.
 
Apple already has one. Although u can't take a picture and automatically diagram it the way u suggest. U can however diagram and take a snapshot and save the layout.

i am not currently a s/w developer, but i spent most of my working life (25 years+) as one, coding in 5 languages and starting a s/w company that did very well, selling product in 40+ countries.

a crowd-sourced spec is any coder's worst nightmare. proven many times over to be the worst way to tackle a project, like getting a committee to write a novel.

it's great idea to fund it here. just find a developer who knows the game and really wants to do it, and then don't try to manage it either yourself or by committee.

I have thought about this, but I can't find away to recoup the investment, plus I agree with the gentleman saying it is a nightmare in a group. What everyone wants would be totally different. If it was just you what do you expect the app to do? Second how big is the market for the app? Would it be for Iphone, Android, blackberry, and Windows? Why would I download the app? What is the goal of having the app?

Just a few questions

I love apps, deal with them everyday, but a huge market for it.

I see what you guys mean about a community written/managed app. I guess is the same as the saying "too many chef's in the kitchen".

Were you guys around for the Wei/Cuetable? It was simply a way to communicate a layout, and bring upon discussion. However, it was not just a static picture. You put it in your post, and then anyone could click on it and move the balls around, add shot lines, etc, to communicate what they would do in the situation.

It spurred many good threads.

The market would only be the pool forums. Currently, only AZ and onepocket.org are very active (at least in the US). It would have to be free. Few are going to pay to download an app in order to participate in a pool forum.

Yes I tried it, and I agree few if any will pay, you would need to recoup your investment by having advertising on the app, whether it be in ads that pop up on the bottom of the screen or you sell real estate on the app for them to put an add on.

Check out this one I built and sent JCIN at TAR, haven't heard back from him yet, he has been and will be busy with these matches. Download the following app, GoMobile Solutions, find their preview tab, and type in rmartin12 either hit load demo on Android, or go and next on Iphone. There are more tabs than show on the bottom. If you swipe to the left you will see more tabs. Not a finished app, but an idea of one for TAR.

If you know exactly what you want let me know, and I will look into it more for you. :thumbup:

Yes, this is what I was thinking in my original post. It has to be for the community (regardless of if its developed by one company/person).

I'd be willing to donate a few bucks to the effort if it was a money thing.

I think its great. I use it to record diagrams on all the different drills I practice. Only problem is I can't ever get the ipad away from my son. :( I think for $4 its excellent.

What made the CueTable diagram program so awesome was its dialog capabilities. We could download, edit and repost diagrams. Unfortunately, Pool Table Memo is no where near as robust as CueTable is. The diagrams are simply turned into screenshots. You can't edit them once they're posted to a forum and forget about 3D capabilities and angle calculations. With Wei, you truly felt pool diagramming was reaching levels only a computer could handle. Now, we are back to a sophisticated napkin with Pool Table Memo which is really all it is.

Wei has offered his product to us for free all this time even though the improvements he's made over the years have taken countless hours. I want to continue supporting him. I think we owe it to him. I hope he can somehow convert his product for iPhone/iPad use and promise to purchase this app once available. I say this because I think we already owe him and because I am 100% certain he will forever have a superior product to anything else out there.

There are many sites out there, such as , elance, where you can have developers bid on your project. If everyone gets what they want I can look for developers to see what a bid price would be.

What happened to the gentleman who made the cue table program everyone is talking about?
