Thanks for all your help. We are back in England now a few $ lighter unfortunately.

Darren and I will be at the Derby City Classic, unfortunately after this we have to return to Europe for a tournament in Norway. Our next trip over to America will be in late January or early February.

We have learnt a great deal from this visit both good and bad. On the good side we met lots of great people and made new friends. On the bad side we did have arranged matches but the goal posts kept moving immediately prior to these matches in terms of spots/stake/race etc. Once we had incurred the quite high travel/hotel expenses we just wanted to play which was probably a mistake. We had anticipated all of our games being for between 5K and 10K and being 10 ahead at 8,9, and 10 ball.

It would be great to have some confirmed matches with trusted players/backers so that we can plan our route properly and make the most of our time in the USA. It is fair to say that whereever Darren goes there is usually good action.

I am looking forward to our next trip and meeting more of the AZ posters in person.

Many thanks,
Dave Wright.

Manager Darren Appleton.

You shouldn't say unfortunately going to Norway, he can win a lot of cash here too ;)

I was hoping to see Darren play in One Side, Manila, in early February, but you are going to the States instead?

Matches

My two cents worth is that as good as Darren is you will have to match up with great players to get more dependable games. Maybe you tried to do that, I don't know. But Stevie Moore would be a good match, and he has a good backer. You know the names of many others of the best here, like Dennis Hatch. Those guys may be more dependable than the slightly lower tier like TW. Good luck in the future.

Hey, it's Aze from Hollywood billiards - If you guys wanted to match up with those characters then why didn't you just head over to the Seminole Florida 10-ball Pro Tour? They should've been there.

It is a shame that the last few years Little T is considered "lower tier" and undependable. There was a time when he had a backer that if you were not from the Phillipines you could bet what you like. One particular road trip we were on with Cracker Jack we chased Tony all over the country before we caught him in Myrtle Beach of all places. We were on a short bankroll (by our usual standards) for the trip. We had about 30k and wanted to play 10k sets with Tony. When we first arrived it was the year a hurricane wiped out a few hotels and being the 4th of July weekend there was not a room to be had within 50 miles of the beach. I had to bribe a local motel maintaince man for his room. He stayed in the basement of a dump right behind the strip.

I went to scope out the relativley new pool room a few blocks away, while Cracker Jack was resting. They had a Tuesday night barbox tourny around 8pm. I could tell that a few players were there to make an easy buck and enjoy the beach. After slipping the houseman a twenty he gave me the lowdown on the players in town. one of the guys nick named Mountin Man (Tall bearded and wore bib coveralls), Little Tony Watson, Jeremy Jones, A kid Named Oklahoma Brett (He ended up going back to Ohio with us), Jaybird (Blond haired southern boy), Mad Max Eberle was on vacation there but no one had seen him in a week, and Steve "the lizard" Smith.

I wanted to clock a few players by playing cheap and I got hooked up with "Jaybird" At the time I played one pocket pretty well but couldn't play nineball a lick. That was my schtick At the time not many guys in there early/mid-twenties played onepocket well. Needless to say Jaybird wanted to play 9ball and since I had one of the best shotmakers on the planet with me, 9ball was the game. We played for two hours at ten a game and I donated 30 bucks. Money well spent in my opinon. I went to get Jack Hynes from the hotel and needless to say that by Jack being jack we were kicked out after just a few hours. With no place to stay we decided to play in the tournament and for Jack to beat all the weak players, but not show 4th or 5th gear, and once he got to play one of the name players he was to lose but show a little bit of speed and the willingness to gamble. The $50 tourney was to pay around 1k I believe + Calcutta. Jack entered as John Brown (If any of you know Jack you know he can change his appearance very well) and we went for the min $10 in the calcutta. we both won our first two matches and faced each other. We decided since I played Jaybird to a standstill earlier that Jack should lose a tight one. My next opponent was Double J. I knew him from his road trip to the Akron open after he won the BCA 8ball title the year before (92? or 93?) He almost ran out the race to seven set. Jack's opponent on the one loss side was Little Tony (He missed his first match starting time) Jack asked him if he wanted to bet on the set Tony said sure what do you want to do Jack said how about 500? Tony told him the could just quit the tournament and play for 2k once his "friend" (backer) got there. Tony told Jack he only had a little cash on him but his friend was bringing him 12k for buying Tony's car (yea right). They played for 50 bucks and Tony dogged a few balls on purpose but still showed enough to win like 7-4. It was sooo hard to hid Jack's big stroke. Tony went on to face the Mountin man in the finals and placed second.

Jack started woofing at mountin man and Tony to play some on the big table for "as much as you want to bet" Mountin man bowed out with his 1.5k score Tony told jack to post up. Jack asked for the 7ball and Tony told him the play even or they don't play. we haggled till Tony's backer showed up and told us we could play 10 ahead for 5k on the front 9fter. Jack asked for the break (if you knew Jack around 1993 he would beat anyone in the world with that spot) Finally they agreed to 10 ahead for 8k on Jack's choice of tables. After he exaimned all the tables Jack wanted to play on the loosest table with the slowest cloth. I opened the rail for betting and I had to close the window after we had 4 more dimes bet on the side.

Tony warmed up for a few minutes on the table won the flip and ran 6 racks!!!! uh oh. Jack tried slug racking him each time but a ball fell every break. After Tony came up dry on the 7th break he complained very animatley about the racks. Typical Jack told him to "go F%@k himself. Jack broke made two balls but was hooked. He played with a Schon at that time that had a Ivory Ferrule and it pinged every shot. He jumped over a ball, back cut the one and scrathed two rails. Tony broke and ran out the set. I left the "up money" alone and paid his backer, and the rail. This was not what we had in mind. Jack told me he needed a break and to give him my keys and a c-note. Tony's backer was livid and said I guess were done. Jack said no we ain't done I'm gonna make you and this kid wish he was somewhere else. Jack who I thought earlier in the day was sleeping must have been doing what junkies do. about two hours later Jack comes strolling in and Tony and his backer were packing up to leave. Jack told Tony he was ready to bust him. Tony said we are done today. jack talked me into raising the bet to 10 ahead for 12k. We were about 12k loser already and the pool room was only open for a few more hours. I got about 2k on the rail the second set. They flipped and traded the first few games the Jack went to the restroom game back and ran 5-6 racks followed by a three foul ran two more then finished out the set after Tony rattled a ball.

They agreed to play the next day on Tony's pet table 12 ahead for 15k. We got there a little early, but Tony was already there about ten minutes before the set was to begin I was approached by an older gentleman whom I thought wanted to get a bet down on Lil T. Instead he informed me that he had seen Tony and Jack talking outside and to be careful. Knowing Jack's history I decided that the best course of action would be to talk to Jack. I told him we only had one barrel to shot and they had multiples. I had to knock out Jack in Akron Ohio when he dumped on me playing Charlie Brinson giving up the 7 ball and he knew he had to play hard or I would sever all ties. I took him off to the side and explained that we are shooting one barrel at the best action in the Carolina's and he better be on the level. He avoided eye contact and said it was money in the bank. He headed in the direction of little T and must have told him the game was on the square because when they flipped Tony had a look of disdain on his face. I was hoping Jack was not rattled by my talk with him, and apparrently it didn't result as follows 12 ahead 9ball for 15 dimes and around 2 dimes on the side Jack took it down in 3 hours. The last set was changed to 10 ball 8 ahead for 10k giving the wild 8ball up with a dime on the side. My girlfriend also got 2k on the side with Tony's backer (she only came into the pool room for first time that day. A woman at the beach go figure) The last set lasted 45 min Jack's cueball looked liked a pinball flying around the table. At that time I think we out ran the nuts at 10 ball but jack's break was working and T's was not. Jack's break was every bit as strong as Busta's. Final result Jack and I + 30k and Monica and I up 2k more. sorry to hijack the thread but that was Tony in his prime and there are not many in the world who have more talent or gamble.

Tony sure does have gamble. Well at least with everyone elses money. I still wonder why guys with that much talent do not save thier winnings to be able to back themselves. Another puzzling question floating around in my mind.
