More Player Lookalikes

My friends and I are one of the most non-PC groups of people you'll ever find. Just a few examples:

We'll tell Carla (who is Mexican), 'I'm sweating like a Mexican writing a cheque' when it's hot.

All the girls (including their kids) make dog-cuisine references to my entire family. Same with our driving ability (or lack thereof).

I ask people, "If I spin around, do you think I'll become disORIENTed?"

I tell my friend, Ellen (who is Jewish), that she's going to hell for making baby Jesus cry.

I make black, white, Asian, Hispanic, blonde, brunette, secular, and dead baby jokes. I've also dated black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Jewish, Catholic, Buddhist, male, female, and am prolife and not prejudiced one bit. I figure, if we can't laugh at these stereotypes, they'll eat away at us.

You've dated a Buddhist? Damnit! I was gonna ask you out, but now, not so much. Jack Russell Terrier is quite tasty, by the way. IMO :D

Many of you seem rather content in your views so please, don't feel as though I'm trying to change them. For several reasons, I feel a need to respond to what you’ve had to say and to further explain my point of view. If anything, so that you may at least know exactly how I feel on the matter and even if you do not agree, to try and understand it.

Using a picture of one of the leading Nazi officers for the purpose of amusement is, in my opinion, insensitive. I am the grandson of a World War II veteran. This man, my grandfather enlisted in the United States Army in his 30s when he was past the age requirements for the draft. He arrived in Normandy D-Day +10, earned five Battle-Stars, The Purple Heart and earned the rank of First Lieutenant. He liberated a concentration camp, saw the atrocities of the war and buried innocent victims, Jews. Atrocities Himmler committed.

I’ve spent a good deal of time in this forum, sometimes for amusement but for the most part, to be part of our great conversation about pool in the hopes that what I have to say might help someone and to perhaps discover something useful for my own game. Without a doubt, it has been a pleasure.

However, this thread has bitten into me deeper than any other, not because of what was initially posted but the reaction to my objection EVEN after an apology was given and accepted. The Santa-reference was meant to be insulting. In response, one poster felt it necessary to tell the board that she found it extremely amusing. I mean, what one finds amusing in private is their own business and I won’t judge people on that but to let the world know is just sad. It shows that we have come full circle. Instead of remembering the Holocaust, we have become desensitized to it. Instead of monitoring our own activity with the fear that words can lead to action, we make jokes of it.

By the way, my sensitivity has not been solely reserved to Jews. I went to Fordham University (New York's only Jesuit school). Prior to a basketball game between us and Columbia University, there were several references made about the church and pedophilia. They used this reference in a rally-cry. Knowing the pride and commitment those Jesuit Priests had in teaching us, I felt honored when they slammed Columbia in the press for making such statements even if it were all in good-fun and for the sake of some good ole’ rivalry. Those priests at Fordham were good people and there was no need to smear them with such dirt.

I know, among friends, I am not always the most politically-correct, either. Nobody is, nor should be. However, Corvette is not my friend and had a derogatory-reference been made to any of you by a stranger, you would react accordingly. The slack that we give our friends does not apply when this is the only encounter we have with someone. “Lighten-up” is not what I owe my grandfather. He didn’t fight in a war, overseas, with a wife at home in hopes that one day, I can laugh at all this. He was willing to die to stop this. I owe him my respect and hoped that my contributions to this board had earned me yours.

I have come to the conclusion that it is simply not worth getting upset over. I’m not leaving mad. I’m leaving because many of you have illustrated that you’re not worth my time.

lol, you are mad at me because I told you to ask Santa for a sense of humor? Is this correct? I'm sorry that you are so personally scarred from the Holocaust that you can take this look-alike thread so completely out of context. Nobody, least of all me, has said one thing degrading or belittleing the Jewish community. In fact, have you ever been personally discriminated against because you were a Jew? I highly doubt it. Since you've decided to pack your bags and leave I doubt you will read this, but it IS almost 2007. The days of Hitler and Himmler are over. Now, mind you, saying this does not mean that we should forgive or forget these attrocities. Much like slavery, past wars, and even 911 we will always remember. But, getting so upset because someone posted a picture in reference to a resemblance is a little silly. IMO

It is good to be honest before you leave and let people know where they stand in your eyes.

Springtime for Hitler

We went up north this past summer and my wife wanted to see a Broadway show so we bought tickets for The Producers. The Springtime for Hitler musical within the musical made me pause and consider the issue of using something so horrible as the basis for comedy. Yet, the musical was amusing and entertaining. And, on the day we attended, there was no one of any denomination picketing outside the theater. Sometimes people tend to forget that Hitler and his ideology destroyed the lives of many people, not just those of our jewish brothers and sisters.

Jude,

There are many of us here who are worth your time. I would like to just make a point that you have chosen to focus on a few negative things and have thrown out all of the positive things.

Of course you can leave. I suppose it's less effort to quit than it is to fix things. I assure you if you approach the rest of your life this way, that's exactly what you will do, again and again and again.

Think about it.

Jude Is A Valuable Asset To AZB

While I certainly wouldn't tell Jude what should and shouldn't be important to him, I hope that he reconsiders leaving AZB.

This brings up a good point. The presence of Himmler's image in this thread doesn't seem ANY different to me than the presence of Hitler in the play-within-a-play in The Producers. Is Mel Brooks an anti-semite now? I think Jude's being entirely unreasonable about this. The original poster apologized to Jude because he posted something which upset Jude. But people who have jumped in to say the original poster didn't do anything offensive are right. It's not something he should have to apologize for. It's just a harmless photo of an awful man who represents an awful historical event, just like "Springtime for Hitler" is a harmless song about an awful man who represents an awful historical event. I'll defend Mel Brooks, and I'll defend AZBilliards. This was not anti-semitism.

I Hope That I Never Have To Say This Again

In all my years online and my tens of thousands of posts I've never said this, but I am anti-emetic and have been my entire life. Please don't hold this against me. I am NOT perfect.

Max Eberle and Ron Livingston (Berger from Sex and the City and he has a new show that's pretty good - "Stand Off").

TAP, TAP, TAP. :)

I do not believe, in my heart of hearts, that the offended party was targeted by anyone.

The intention of the thread was to bring a little levity into the forum. Instead, it brought forth anger, rage, and negativity.

Bah, humbug. :(

Jude is a huge asset to this board and it's a real shame how things have turned out. On the one hand, I do agree that images of truly evil people (Hitler et al, bin Laden, etc) should not be used to evoke laughter. It does desensitize to a degree. You have a bunch of loons out there who are denying the very existence of the Holocaust, and even though they probably know they're full of shit, their kids don't. In a generation or so, we'll lose any living link to that horrible history. What happens after that is up to us.

It is hard to begrudge someone's feelings and convictions. They are what they are, and they are real. I lost some family during that period, though I do feel guilty that I sometimes forget it wasn't just Jews who died at Nazi hands. If we believe the numbers, just as many non-Jews perished. That's an awful lot of people who died a terrible death - for nothing.

However, although I agree with Jude that the original picture should have come down, I can't justify this position. As such, I chose not to comment until now. I doubt if anyone would have made such an objection if a picture of George Bush was posted, even though hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died because of a war he started. [I don't want to get political, because I am not as well-read in history as I ought to be. So by no means do I intend that as a jab at Republicans. I am sure the same could be said, in relation to other conflicts, for many Democratic presidents.] From an Iraqi point of view, I am fairly sure a picture of George Bush is much more incendiary than a picture of Hitler.

On my frequent road trips with Danny Barouty, he regales me with stories of history. Strategic battles, massacres, and so on. He knows his stuff, and it's really interesting. If there's one theme throughout history, it's that humans suck. We like to kill, and usually only over two things - land and religion. What many of our revered founding fathers did to the native americans on these lands is unspeakable. But if one of them happened to look like John Schmidt, he'd be up here on this thread for sure, lol.

We all have our personal scars, some done to us and some to our ancestors. Life would be really uninteresting if we had to vet every single reference to a historical figure against his human rights record. I know I won't do it, and I can't expect anyone else to. I can be offended by what others do, and if my convictions are strong enough, I can ask for some sort of retraction. I may receive such relief, or I may not. But I'm not going to defeat anti-semitism by asking for a picture to be taken down. It's either in the heart or it's not.

So that's my opinion. I am really hoping Jude comes back. You couldn't ask for a more resourceful, eloquent, and yes, opinionated, forum member. Let's respectfully give him some time. I know him, and he's worth it.

That's also Lt.Nixon from Band of Brothers (probably his best role ever), and also the guy from Office Space (one of the funniest movies ever).
